Knees. I used to have a good lotus, but after time away from yoga, and trying to resume my practice, I think I pushed too fast, and twisted my knee. Now I need to know what to try in order to progress without injury. Thank you for all the info you share. Namaste.
It’s my shins, I’ve been able to do lotus pose since childhood no problem but when I’m holding it for extended periods of time or a few postures in a row, there’s pressure between my shin bones from my legs being stacked on top of eachother. Not my joints, just the pressure of my legs on themselves. Can’t find an answer to this anywhere
I reaIly like your videos and you make things so simple. I have an angle pain in lotus and infact i got swelling on my angle bcs i forced myself for lotus . Thanks
Hi Yas, you're so welcome! So you probably need to work more on stretching the outside of the hips (lateral rotators) and the inner thighs (adductors) and you'll find the pain will start to disappear. I'm working on a video to show you more stretches, but definitely check out my Lotus Pose workshop where I talk you through some great exercises for this: ua-cam.com/video/eYbcaLk6dE8/v-deo.html
Yes! If you do squats with really good form then it will increase your hip mobility and enhance your lotus pose! The only thing is, squatting also increases the tension in your glutes, which can sometimes create tightness. But as long as you do regular stretching then I think squatting and lotus pose work well together 🙏 I work on my squats twice per week and it has improved my Lotus Pose because my hips are more stable so I don't get any pain in the hips
Many thanks for this video and for all your help. I have mainly ankle pain, specially on the right. So I can only stay in Padmasana for a couple of minutes!
You're so welcome Sara. A couple of minutes is really good - that is going to increase slowly over time as the hip opens up. If you can stay (e.g.) one minute without pain each day, the Lotus Pose will really help with creating the external rotation in the hip and the ankle pain will slowly start to disappear. But if it's painful for the whole minute, try working on your hip opening outside of the practice (check out my workshop for some ideas on how to stretch! ua-cam.com/video/eYbcaLk6dE8/v-deo.html )
Hello!! Facing pain sensation at inner knees while padmasana. Suggested is to practise janu sirssana a, but the pain sensation is felt even bending the kness while getting in janu sirsana A itself. *Pain is felt occasionally, not every day*
>>> Thankyou for the video. I just started to try padmasana however it seems I am forcing towards it and try to sit for 30+ min but then it starts causing severe numbness in mostly left foot (from knee to toe), also right ankle pain due to twist as you pointed out in this video. >>> There is one more thing I wanted to ask : Why my left knee is in the air and right knee is firmly level on the floor. This also causes severe stress in left knee which is not grounded while in padmasana... >>> I may stop this asana until I find the correct way but would request you to address above mentioned issues. >>>Thankyou again for being so helpful.
Hi there! Well, sitting for 30 minutes in Padmasana is very good! It's quite normal to get numbness after such a long time, just because the blood circulation will slow down. It's best to get up and move around every 45 mins - 1 hour at least, even if it is annoying for long meditation sessions. My left knee is also in the air - this is a sign that the left hip is tighter than the right. When you practise hip opening postures, try spending more time on the left side so that you can even out the left and right sides. Hope this is helpful
Today for the first time I was able to do headstand padmasana , and I tried it twice more. So the second time, I heard a popping sound a side of lower knee side has a very little pain. Is it serious!
Hi Nina, do you mean when you sit on the ground in Padmasana or when you're just sitting normally? Pain in the ankles usually suggests your hips need to open a little more so that the pressure on the ankles is reduced!
@@ashtangayogagirl4359 just when I'm sitting with crossed legs like in a meditative pose. I used to be able to do the lotus when I was younger but now I feel a lot stiffer. I'm 33.
I can sort of manage lotus (although not gracefully ha!) when I cross the left leg first but I cannot achieve it at all if I cross the right leg first ... It is certainly not a pose that comes naturally. Many thanks for your lessons x
That's interesting Caroline! Definitely feel free to switch legs if you have one hip more open than the other. Better to do it the "non-traditional" way and keep your body happy than to force the right leg first just to stick to the tradition. We're all different :)
Hi Selena, if you feel pressure pressing on your thigh with your foot in position, it's a sign that the hip is tight! I know it sounds crazy, but the muscles in the hips are not letting go enough to allow the lower leg to be relaxed. Keep working on all the different hip stretches that I show in my videos and it will improve over time
Basically ankles are my problem. But it's not that my ankles hurt. It is that my ankle puts pressure on my thigh, and this pressure hurts my thigh and stops blood flow. If my left leg is on top, then the right ankle hurts my left leg, but my right leg feels fine. Also, in this case, I can put my right knee on the ground, but not my left knee. Any ideas? I am not very flexible in the lower back, but somehow I have always been able to enter into lotus no problem, as can both of my sisters. None of really stretch, so I think it might be some inherited trait.
Thanks for your videos.I was able to perform baddha padmasana earlier with ease. In between , I did not practice for sometime. Now I am not able to perform it .I practice kickboxing and hit bag regularily.Does this limit my flexibility?
I’m extremely flexible bc I have.. joint hypermobility/ double jointed/ elhers Danlos ….whatever people prefer to call it anyways yes it’s caused a lot of issues for me over the years but I just tried the lotus pose for the first time “correctly” apparently bc over the years I guess I’ve been doing it the wrong way & just never noticed or had someone show me till now anyways it makes the top of my right foot hurt so bad. I’m not a used to having issues in yoga with things like this well it looked easy to me so I was lil shocked that it’s not because normal even if it’s just my first time things are a breeze so I have to be careful stretching too much but omg the pressure is making it very difficult; for some thing that supposed to be so relaxing & helping you meditate, this sucks lol. I apparently have a bit to go before I can relax bc this is definitely gonna be a challenge to learn how to somehow ignore & not feel like my right foot is being crushed by my body. As if meditating isn’t gonna be hard either lol I honestly thought that would be the hard part lol Defiantly checking out your other video bc I have looked at a lot step by step & at this point, I think I’m doing everything the correct way just gotta get a used to it maybe 🙄🥴🥵. I really don’t want to do it half ass bc I feel like I need to be doing it the correct Buddha way 🤷♀️🤨🧘♀️🪷 and is it really tight ankles bc honestly my ankles feel fine to me just literally the top arch part of my right foot I think called the dorsum

Please talk about that... it's causes and prevention... possibly what it may lead to as well... thanks!🙂 Also...it would be great if you share your email id so that I getin touch for more queries.......
I don't feel pain anywhere specifically. rather a kind of overall discomfort. Trying to meditate 10 mins in lotus posture, brings me a lot of stress and sleeplessness
Hi Michelle, If you're getting numb legs / feet after lotus pose it sounds like you might be doing it for too long! How long do you sit in the position? Numbness is usually a sign that the circulation to the legs has dropped. It could be that you're sitting down for too long, or it could be a sign that tightness in your hips is causing your shins/ankles to press too hard on your legs (which is cutting off circulation). I don't think you need to stop doing yoga, probably just ease off in Padmasana and supplement your practice with some other hip opening postures :)
Hi Kelsang, ankle pain is usually just a result of tightness in the muscles around your hips! Make sure you're doing regular stretching of all the muscles (with a regular yoga practice) and then try Padmasana towards the end of your practice, even just holding it for a few breaths. With patience it will start to bloom!
