Same. I actually didn't know Skipper existed until Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse came out in the early 2010s and I was like 12. I think I only knew about Kelly.
Same here! I remember the Kelly dolls being HUGE near the end of the 90's, maybe early 00's. The Wizard of Oz dolls. My mom liked buying me Kellys instead of Barbies because they were cheaper. 😆
I got the growing up Skipper doll for Christmas. It was the adults that passed it around and laughed at it the most. Also the last Barbie I ever got, as I was soon deemed "too old" to play with Barbies. I had to give my collection, my case that turned into a house, and of course, all the clothes to my cousins. Needless to say I was not happy.

I am a Skipper collector, and I agree that the 1982 Skipper is the ugliest and does look like Sid!!! The reason Growing Up Skipper had a long maxi skirt for the more mature “teen” version is because that’s what was in style at that time! Great presentation, and thanks for this video!

Skipper appears in the Cool Colors line dressed in green and when the ad came out I thought "why are there two Barbies" I remember that Teen Skipper was a bit controversial because of her baggy pants and her "tattoos" because of the typical 90's hysteria.
Skipper is mentioned near the end of the movie. They mention some of the discontinued dolls and the Skipper they mention is “Grow Up Skipper”; the gimmick was that if you lifted her arm up in the air it caused her boobs to expand.

I always thought 80s/early 90s Skipper reminded me of DJ Tanner from Full House. In fact, I might have pretended she was, and Stacie and Kelly were Stephanie and Michelle Tanner 😅
My favorite doll growing up was my Mom's original 1964 Skipper and I didn't realize until I was missing it when my Grandma suddenly donated all the barbies to my toddler cousin. A year later I was still upset over it and we managed to get that single doll back once I told them how old it was. Skipper went to the Barbie movie with me lol
OMG! That tiny slip is adorable & definitely a must have for girls back in the day. I was an 80's girl, so every time I'd wear a full circle skirt, I'd have a slip underneath to fill it out (make it poofy). It was definitely a necessity for turning a look. I still have a similar pair of Barbie panties that survived my childhood.
Exactly! It’s not weird at all. The “under pretties” weren’t intended to be worn on Skipper by itself. Slips were a closet staple then. I remember my mom owned a slip in every length and color in the 80s and 90s. Skipper is meant to wear it under her dresses to make them poofier, and prettier if the lace trim peeks below the hem. 🤍
@AnzuMiruku Yes! In those days, the Barbie brand was about accurate details & I don't think it was 'proper' for ladies to leave home without slips. Under garments were a BIG deal in the previous century.
@kawaiicandy25 Yes! Oh my stars, I just remembered the spin test! 💃🏾If your dress didn't make a full circle when you spun around, it wasn't good enough. 🤣. Thanks for unlocking that memory, I'm tempted to see if any dress I own can pass that critical testing standard of little girls.
I think the long skirt is just a reflection of the fashion of the time. It was very on trend for a teen girl to wear a long skirt, mainly because of high school dress codes.

My favorite video of yours yet! I'd love to see one about Kelly/Chelsea next. I especially enjoyed the shoutout to Tutti and Todd, I actually have 2 Tutti dolls that were my mom's as a child and I always thought her face was a little strange (especially compared to my 90's Kellys and Stacies) but I find her really cute and nostalgic now. I'm also just finding out that Ashley Katchadorian from The Most Popular Girls in School is a Skipper doll.
90’s child here, I had both Cool Sitter Skipper (she actually had 4 babies, one is in a carrier behind her back that you can’t really see in the picture) and Fashion Party Skipper was just as cool as you think she is - I LOVED her outfits!
Great video, I have an extensive vintage Skipper collection, I related to her more than Barbie when I was little, you always put out high quality well researched content, thank you for that
I had sun skipper. She came with stickers that you could put on her skin. When she tanned they would leave shapes like butterflies and hearts. Loved it! Tried it on myself. Got to love the 70s
I got the original Skipper for my 4th birthday in 1966. In my opinion, she is the best one. Likely because she was my childhood doll. I still have her. Of all my collection, I love her the most.
Interesting video. Well done. As an aside, sunscreens existed in various parts of the world long before 1971, but if you had asked the average American citizen in 1971 if he/she used sunscreen, the response would have been something like, "Do you mean suntan lotion?" Malibu Skipper's parents probably would have thought she just looked healthy with that deep tan. It took a while longer for us to wise up.
16:11 her 2009 version is cute and this 2007 2008 and 2008 kelly before she was discontinued had the what I call the Preschool body and it's super cute as well as Chelsea
I have the Target Skipper, my husband is a manager at Target and he thought it was cool and bought it for me when it first came out. She is the only Skipper doll I have or have ever had. I don't know why, I guess I'm just a Barbie girl but I am glad I got a Skipper and I went out and got a Stacie and Chelsea dolls as well.
I had yo yo skipper she had a blue outfit and white sneakers and Stacy Polly pocket edition. But I like skipper doll in 90s . The new Skipper doll is nice. But 90s and 2001 where the best for skipper dolls .
My wife and I finally got around to watching Barbie last night. Growing up in the 1960s/70s, Barbie was a big thing for her. (She still has a Scarlett O'Hara Barbie...sadly, the green gown is very faded on one side.). When they mentioned Skipper in the movie, she absolutely burst out laughing and talked about Growing Up Skipper. I had to investigate and that's how I found this video!
My friend and I were talking about the wedding Barbies the other day because I had at least a full size one and at least a couple McDonald's happy meal ones. I think the idea of Barbie is that she can be anything. She's not supposed to be canonically married but it's important for girls to understand that there's nothing wrong with being married/domestic if that's what they WANT to do. Barbie is about representation.
I had no idea Skipper had so many friends/boyfriends. I wasn’t allowed to have Barbie dolls as a kid and my daughter didn’t show any interest in Barbies until she started watching the animated shows. She actually started with the baby sitting Skipper (brunette with purple streaks and 2 babies) followed by Barbie with puppies, and then Stacie & Chelsea with camping gear. She loves them, but I am very disappointed that so many Barbie dolls (especially ones that come with accessories/play sets) have cheap clothes, little to no articulation, and bad hair.
I love watching the Sam & Mickey Barbie parodies and Skipper is my favorite character in those so it’s interesting to see her actual origins and dolls. Great video!
Some people are of the opinion that Stacie was named for Ruth Handler's granddaughter, but I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere. Have you? In the Midge and Alen wedding set, the Stacie sized doll was named Kelly. The name Kelly was later given to an older infant/toddler sister.
It's funny you mentioned "Scott" I actually have him in my collection. I have a few different Skipper starting from the first one made. I love Skipper. This was a fun video.
I had Super Teen Skipper with her skateboard and loved her! Also had Malibu Skipper, but did not really care for her. I don't remember her having tan lines.
Oh wow, I got the original Skipper in 1964, when I got my first Barbie. My mom didn't really approve of Barbie and bought my sister and I Skipper. My dad said, no ya gotta get the Barbie too.
I have a couple of Pizza Party Kevin. I didn't know his name until recently. All I knew was that I had teen boy from Mattel. The late 80s Skipper was the one I grew up with. She was about the same size as Tyco Ariel. (Lots of play value there with the two exchanging clothes.) I really liked the 90s Teen Skipper. (I think that body mold got used in the Disney Princess line.) The Palm Beach and Surf City sets were the last time I remember seeing that particular teen Skipper. The new ones are fun. It's a nice break that Skipper has a different hair color. I really liked one playset as I wanted to trim up her hair for a makeover.
From kindergarten - still have my 1st 1963 brunette bubble hair cut Barbie, 1st blonde Skipper, 1st locked hair brunette Ken, then Franci. Clothing. Always took care. Wanted the black Julia Barbie-of 1960s TV show. Great history info.
Hi Joey, The Cool Sitter Skipper actually has four babies. There is one baby on her back. She is one of my favorite dolls. Unfortunately I don't have her anymore.😢
My sister and actually had Growing Up Skipper when we were kids. We didn't have any problem with it and neither did my mom. If we had questions, my mom talked to us. Re: long skirt in her teen form, in the 70s the maxi dress and maxi skirt for teen and young adult women was popular.
Hi small theory on why the grow up skipper doll had a longer skirt for her as a teen. It could be a reference to how in the past little girls would wear just above the ankle length dresses until they were considered grown up which is when she would change to wear dresses that covered her ankles.
There are five official Barbie siblings the rarest set to find is Tutti and Todd. The twins, not to be confused with Stacy/Krissy who Todd was often paired with as a twin. The Barbie siblings are Barbie Skipper Stacy Shelly/Kelly/Chelsea Tutti and Todd. Krissy was an add on and often paired with Todd as infants or young toddlers. Tutti and Todd had their own friends set and were more bendable and a bodies similar to rag dolls. Tutti is one of the hardest to find because she was replaced by others. It is important to note that none of the doll not even Krissy were ever marketed as Barbie's children. All were either siblings, cousins, or friends.
I still have my original 1964 Skipper! I also have her friend, the ginger Ricky! I also had most Skipper clothes and all Ricky clothes. Ricky had REAL ZIPPERS in his tiny pants! I also have the original Tutti!
Idk of someone else said it first but, 15:26 Super Teen Skipper is wearing 2 babies, one in back and one in front!! She's watching 4 babies!!😂😅 damn that girl works hard
I’ve been collecting Barbie since I was 4, and I’m 53 now. I remember getting my growing up Skipper (and Ginger), of course I still have them. I remember as a child adoring her and liking the way her age could change but never once did I see her as a being sexualised as per the newspaper article, sometimes kids don’t think what adults think they think I guess…
I had many skipper dolls growing up in the 80s, I loved them ^^ my favourite was Dream Date Skipper, because she had short brown hair just like me, and such a beautiful outfit
I got Quick Curl Barbie and my little sister got Quick Curl Skipper for Christmas 50 years ago. The wiry hair was frustrating and it didn't take much for us to totally wreck the hair.. good times.
1991 Babysitter Skipper was the only Skipper I ever owned. It took me ages to convince my Mom I absolutely needed her. She was one of my favorite dolls for a long long time! Loved her hair, outfit and all the baby accessories that came with her. I still have the accessories and Skipper. No idea what happened to the actual baby that came with her. Haven’t seen it in ages.
I love Skipper, Im a BIG fan, I have many, not sure how many... but many. The first doll I ever got was Babysitter Courtney and my sister gt Babysitter Skipper.
I had Pet Pals Skipper (1991) and later Teen Skipper (1997). I liked that it felt I was "growing up" with her. Teen Skipper was like the epitome of cool in 1997!
I find the histories of Barbie characters fascinating given how a lot of them have changed so much over the decades. And thanks to your videos, I understood a lot of the references in the movie! A year ago, I never would have thought I’d be so immersed in Barbie lore now. Before, I only knew about Barbie and Ken, obviously, as well as Midge (because I knew about the Happy Family Midge controversy (I even know the doll’s official name, hehe)) and maybe one or two others. I do like the dynamics between Barbie and her sisters as shown in Life the Dreamhouse, though isn’t it kind of ironic how Skipper was introduced to combat the perception of Barbie being “too mature” when she now seems to be Skipper, Stacie and Chelsea’s legal guardian? :-P
Growing Up Skipper wore a long skirt when she became a teenager to disguise the fact that the mechanism gave her a longer, less proportioned torso, and also because it was a more 'adult' style than the short skirt that little girls used to wear.
I think it's so cool that Skipper was created.😃Most of that history/dolls I never knew about. And a very tiny bit of that stuff me and my sisters have. It was funny realizing the stuff that we owned because now I know why some of those clothes are smaller or won't fit on my Barbies. 😅
I was never interested in Skipper but my little sister had Western Skipper. I had Western Barbie and Ken. I did have a PJ doll I got from a garage sale. She may have been part of the Sun Lovin' Malibu line because she had tan lines. I miss PJ, I wish they'd bring her back.
Breaking up with her boyfriend at Pizza Hut is the most accurate to the reality of being a teen that Skipper has ever been

I am sure there are more, but can't think of any at the moment.
As a Gen Xer I think "Growing Up Skipper" was a form of sex ed for our working mom's to skip the "talk" 🤣🤣🤣
I love your videos! You are the Barbie Guru, it is so awesome!
"Listen, kid, puberty is just like this doll. So never let a boy twist your arm."
"But, Mom..."
"Later, kid, I gotta go get a pack of smokes."
@@ttintagelLMAO
@@ttintagel 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 You had that mom too?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Skipper is my favorite Barbie doll. The current. Babysitters Inc dolls r so pretty. They were my first petite dolls
16:05 ahhhhh that’s my first Skipper doll!!! I had gotten the whole camping set & dolls for that Christmas!!! Yes I still have her
16:42 ugh I love this era of Skipper. I can’t tell u how many of this version I bought
16:57 yes my favorite era of Skipper with different skin tones & hair just wish they had articulation
The Growing Up Skipper also had a convertible bedroom, which went from bunk beds to twin beds. The artwork showed both dolls in the bedroom.
I loved my skipper doll, growing up i loved how she was a “mini barbie” and just the perfect size to carry around.
those vintage 60s outfits are so cute and very realistic
Gosh Ken looks so miserable in the 2010 dream wedding set 😂 Love the history of Skipper, thank you for the video!
I got the original Skipper for my 4th birthday in 1966. In my opinion, she is the best one. Likely because she was my childhood doll. I still have her. Of all my collection, I love her the most.
Actually Fluff is also the name of Barbie's early 80s white kitten.
15:23 it’s 4 babies… not 3, so it’s quadruplets. There’s one hiding behind her shoulder in a carrier on her back. 🤣
Early to mid 90s will always be my Skipper. Great video! 👍🏼
After Skipper being mentioned in the Barbie movie, I need a Skipper movie.
Enjoyed watching this, my only complaint was that there wasn't anything about Talking Skipper, but I love your channel
this video made me realize that my childhood collection had like four of the late 90s Teen Skippers and only one actual Barbie lol
I had yo yo skipper she had a blue outfit and white sneakers and Stacy Polly pocket edition. But I like skipper doll in 90s . The new Skipper doll is nice. But 90s and 2001 where the best for skipper dolls .
Love this, would like to see something similar for the Kelly/Stacy dolls as well!
Skipper was so cute. My little sister had the 1989 version and I loved that doll, the frilly clothes and crimped hair
My first Mattel doll was a brunette Skooter, which I couldn’t stand. I always wanted a Skipper. As an adult, I have lots of Skippers.
I lovee skipper from the 80's and 90's! I have quite the collection going! I think my favorite is Extreme Green Skipper 😊
The Pizza Hut Skipper doll was my first Skipper doll that I got for my 5th birthday!
Love Skipper, I was gifted a couple of the original Skipper dolls.
I love your history videos of the dreamhouses, pools, skippers.. I had Tropical Skipper.
I don't remember her having tan lines.
skipper is really cool.
You can't beat late 90s early 2000 skipper
Agreed 🤩
I had the Sun Lovin’ Malibu Skipper growing up and I was always confused with and fascinated by her tan lines. 😆
I just picked up a Western Skipper in the box and love her! I like Skipper as a teen better then as a younger kid.
Skipper is one of my fave dolls to use in my doll stories. i named one of mine skipper dolls, charlotte.
Hi Joey, The Cool Sitter Skipper actually has four babies. There is one baby on her back. She is one of my favorite dolls. Unfortunately I don't have her anymore.😢
“In the mid 90s mattel tried it again with my scene”
Wow i never knew the 90s lasted till *2007*
My sister and actually had Growing Up Skipper when we were kids. We didn't have any problem with it and neither did my mom. If we had questions, my mom talked to us. Re: long skirt in her teen form, in the 70s the maxi dress and maxi skirt for teen and young adult women was popular.
I had teen babysitter skipper with the triplets. Those babies were my favorite!
I played with my sisters and their Barbies and my 12 lnch GI Joes back in the 1960's
My brother and I made my Ken doll, with red beard drawn on and hair colored with red, and blonde GI Joe as Dr Quest and Race Bannon
Hi small theory on why the grow up skipper doll had a longer skirt for her as a teen. It could be a reference to how in the past little girls would wear just above the ankle length dresses until they were considered grown up which is when she would change to wear dresses that covered her ankles.
My mom had Growing Up Skipper and she LOVED HER
There are five official Barbie siblings the rarest set to find is Tutti and Todd. The twins, not to be confused with Stacy/Krissy who Todd was often paired with as a twin. The Barbie siblings are
Barbie
Skipper
Stacy
Shelly/Kelly/Chelsea
Tutti and Todd.
I had the OG Skipper and Scooter (who had a permanent blonde flip do and freckles ❤!)
skipper is one of my favorite doll literally love her
I still have my original 1964 Skipper!
I am obsessed with your History of videos. I binge them repeatedly. Can't wait to see which doll you plan to do next.
Oh me too the history of the "Barbies" is super cool I hope we get more ❤
I got Quick Curl Barbie and my little sister got Quick Curl Skipper for Christmas 50 years ago. The wiry hair was frustrating and it didn't take much for us to totally wreck the hair.. good times.
In case you would plan on doing Q&A here's my question: is your channel gaining popularity during this Barbie movie hype?
It definitely has! Which is very exciting
I had teen skipper and she’s been my favorite doll since.
When you mentioned that Ricky was Skipper’s special friend, I thought “That’s great disability representation.”
Tiff is wearing unisex fashion, popular at the time.
I still, have my old Barbie Family. Barbie is 1962, pretty much mint, all of them. And YES I played with them, ALL, CAREFULLY.
