I feel like people projected many social flaws and inequality on a simple doll. Barbie never taught me to hate my body, puberty and social standards did. Me and my sister were always playing with Barbies and she made us creative kids, we bonded as sisters a lot trough playing.
They unrealistically want Barbie to be all things to all people and whenever Mattel tries they get criticised. Why is it Barbie’s responsibility to represent every single person on the planet? So unreasonable. And I don’t know anyone who thought as a child they had to look like Barbie. We all just thought she was pretty and fun to play with.
MATTEL decided to broaden their appeal by creating various versions and capture more of the broader market and its' dollars. That's THEIR Corporate marketing policy.

I was like 10 or so, I just assumed she (the doll) was an adult, it was clear on the packaging that she was to me. But my step grandmother made a comment that of course my sister would want a doll like that. Insinuating that she would be a teen pregnancy, which she always made sly comments like that. I promise that more so than not, kids will play with anything, they learn of these negative notions through the adults that more often than not, buy them the toys they don't like. That isn't without it's criticism of the always in heels and being normal barbie skinny after. But again, it's a doll.
Yeah I didn't see anything wrong with that doll. It was showing the different parts of life. Yeah they probably shouldn't have called them teenagers originally, because problems arose and they don't look like teenagers. They look like adults. I would be the FIRST to buy a “heavier-set” Barbie but I have yet to see one made in an elegant and inexpensive way.
My mom had Tammy and Pepper dolls from Ideal, her neighbor had Barbie and Skipper. Me and my sister eventually filled up an entire suitcase with a variety of Barbie dolls: Barbie with various jobs and interests (dentist, camping, grocery shopping), Skipper (she had bendable knee and elbow joints), Stacie (with her bike and plastic puppy), and a few varieties of baby sister Kelly (I specifically remember "potty training Kelly"). Of course, we also had a bunch of Ken dolls; i specifically remember the one with soft hair and the 5 o'clock shadow you could easily "shave off" with water and a teently tiny plastic razor

WRONG WRONG WRONG Hi I know a lot about doll history & fashion history and this video spreads a lot of misinformation! -Lili is not a "call girl" she's a secretary, this is a common misconception because of some translations from German to English. Lili was popular because she was a independent career woman who loved dressing beautifully and dating, the humor of her comic strip came from her work setting and personal life. Her doll was an adult collectible, but she wasn't just for men and she was sold as a novelty gift in regular stores. -Most of the dolls of the world are great representations of their cultures, in general it's a beautiful line of dolls that look amazing in and out of their boxes. Some of them are... regrettable, but most are not. -That Black Canary doll is a collectors doll for adults, she is not a playline doll and that was reflected in her price and clothing that would be frustrating for a young child with limited manual dexterity. If you want an outrageous S&M looking DC doll, look at the Halle Berry Catwoman. She was priced like a playline doll but more popular among adult collectors. I actually had her as a kid and she was one of my favorites because of her alternative fashion. She even came with Catwoman's whip too 😂 I'll add another common misconception fun fact here too because I see this a lot and the new movie leans into it for some reason: Earring magic Ken was not controversial and he had a normal release with the rest of the Earring Magic Barbies. His necklace was just a place for the Earrings to be displayed and the designers did not visit a queer nightclub for inspiration. DarlingDollz has a great video on these common misconceptions, I highly recommend it if you want to know the truth about Mattel's history with Barbie!

Mattel employees have stated that they were aware of the resemblance to queer fashion while he was in production, and they didn't mind at all because their job was to sell Barbies and queer adults sometimes spend a lot of money on Barbies. I have no idea why they imply he was discontinued due to controversy in the movie, but if you ask people who worked at Mattel at the time they will tell you that he was discontinued at the same time as the earring magic Barbies in the same way all playline dolls are eventually discontinued as new ones are released. Fun fact bild lilli mold was sold to a toy company in Hong Kong but because the rights to bild lilli was sold to Mattel, Hong Kong had to change her they made clone lilli but with the same mold so the bild lilli clones that read Hong kong are made with the same mold bild lilli was made with so you can still collect a lilli but not a bild lilli but still lilli she is referred as Hong kong lilli or just lilli or clone lilli.
Wow, Barbie sure gets criticism from every side! I still have 2 Barbie's and a 1 Skipper from my childhood. One of my Barbies has a platinum bubble cut and I have always just LOVED her. My mom taught me how to sew by helping me sew clothes for my Barbies and my big Betsy McDoll doll. First with mod 60s clothes printed out on the fabric, then with patterns. Some of my best childhood memories are making tiny doll clothes with my mom. Seems silly that Barbie must be all things to everyone. But, interesting.
For me, the most hated barbie ever was always, and will always be "Sit in Style Barbie". It came out in the 90's and it was exactly that. Just Barbie with a freaking chair. I dont hate it because it was offensive, I hate it because it lacked anything interesting or desirable, but my god, did they try desperatly to market it!
Thanks for the Lily reminder. I was born the same year as Barbie. My memory could be wrong, but HBO might have had a Barbie documentary to celebrate her 60th birthday. There was a whole segment about LILY. Great segment here
Before Bratz came out, Barbie was literally the highlight of my childhood. As a kid, I liked these doll because they were beautiful and they had amazy pink cars and cool dream houses. The only Barbie doll I don't like is the one that came with the book that said don't eat inside. That Barbie shouldn't have been released but I don't see the problem in any of the others... And if you're concerned with your child playing with Barbie's tiny accessories, get them a different Barbie doll. Also, I don't understand why a pregnant doll was such a controversy. Kids may not be aware of sex but they're not blind. They see pregnant women everywhere in the real world. Doesn't make sense to me at all.
No matter what who do there will always be people who will remain unsatisfied and unhappy. The most beautiful thing about Barbie is that she is so unique in herself and yet so inclusive of everything and everyone. Growing up I don't remember learning anything bad but only good from Barbie, especially the fact that anything is possible and you can be anything is you dream and work for is. She gives idea of the limitless possibilities and opportunities. I think her contribution in people's childhood is much positive (directly or indirectly). No child would compare herself to Barbie (at least not me) rather a friend. I have a lot of different kinds of barbies with different names personalities, backgrounds. Its something way beyond the adults can imagine because they have boundaries and differences. They are always concluding stuff. Kids don't think that way. They just play with their imagination without differences.
Remember Penny Brite? She was a doll that had a lot of fashionable clothes, but was created to be a “more appropriate alternative” to Barbie for little girls. Pretty popular in the early ‘60’s.
Oh, geez! Over and over the old adage about "... pleasing some of the people some of the time!" Somebody has to take offense over something or it wouldn't be a toy company! Haha!
I grew up on barbie’s and absolutely loved them!! Had the clothes the blow up furniture sets house, i had about it all !!!! People will always find something to B.tch about , JS
I saw the dolls as models and I was fine with their bodies and that all the clothes and shoes were interchangeable. It is a toy. I didn't want short or curvy Barbie. Models are not those sizes.
One day, my mom walked into my room. I was four years old. I had a wicker chair and at the bottom of the chair legs was my Barbies naked and tied up with shoestrings, She asked me « what are you doing? » I told her « they were bad Barbie’s mom. » lol 😅
As a woman who recently earned a Bachelor's degree in math I am proud to say that the male/female breakdown of those majoring in math at my university was pretty much 50/50 and the women wanted to use their degrees for a variety of reasons, not just to be teachers. Wanting to be a teacher was the reason most women majored in STEM the first time I went to college in the 90s. I was the weirdo majoring in biology/chemistry to go into research. I ended up working in quality control in several pharmaceutical labs and it was dominated by males. I was often the only woman working in the lab. I'm so glad things have become more equal in recent years. Part of that we do owe to Barbie. She let little girls know it was admirable to imagine themselves in any career they wanted and were not just limited to being a stay at home mom.
Whatever barbie is made to represent a group of people there will still be people in that group who look slightly different they're at least trying to be inclusive you can't make a doll to look like everyone at once
I had a hundred Barbie's as child and my Aunt would buy me the Holiday Barbie to collect. I still get a Holiday Barbie every year from my husband now. Sometimes my Aunt would buy me 2, 1 to collect and 1 to play with.
The main take away I get from this, is that Barbie will never win. She’s too thin, or too fat, or progressive or not progressive enough, she’s inclusive and also disrespectful, she’s honoring a culture or she’s capitalizing off of it, and her Down syndrome barbie got it right but it’s not good enough. There have been obvious misfires for the brand as this video points out, but a lot of controversy ignores the very positive things she’s done too
No one will ever be happy with every Barbie. It’s just like twitter in a lot of ways where a lot of people think every tweet must apply to their lives experiences.
They forgot about Tattoo Barbie. The owners of these dolls could add tattoos to the surface of the doll. Only difference is, those tattoos would wash off. I think the dolls also came with temporary tattoos for the kid.

I had bought them for my granddaughters and myself including my niece's. I had bought six hundred and fifty, and gave alot of them away. I love Barbie she was alot of FUN.🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹.
Barbie is A TOY, real life does NOT need or have to be incorporated into Barbie. There's already dolls for that, which children get at school for certain classes, at certain times of their education. Baby born, another TOY, but is more anatomically correct. that toy has been controversial also. G.I Joe, for boys, then we got G.I Jane for girls, and there was Army Barbie. a whole FIASCO due to some thinking, that only Barbie is for girls, girls don't want to be in the army. but, many are, and have been. can children just have a toy to have fun, use their imagination, life (Barbie's) is their creation? Lego is less controversial. EVERYTHING IS AWESOME as EVERYONE buys and plays with that. There hasn't been Goth Barbie, oh but that would be too frightening and all other bable bulls**t. the Goth Bratz doll was changed, now the original is worth a FORTUNE. also, there's CULTURED (people, countries who invented many foods, fashion, music, film, that we love) yet that's STEROTYPICAL. there's a difference, same with Phobia and Tolerance. but, people get lost in that, and get all up in arms over a TOY.
ohmigod the black canary barbie was OBVIOUSLY made for adults, there is no arguing. it was a collectors doll. she was part of a line of dc characters who got dolls and they were MADE. FOR. COLLECTORS. and lol people can collect dolls and like comics. there are way more controversial barbies you could have put on this list.
Here is my problem with society. They want to call barbie a bad influence and she gives young girls body issues, but in truth, its the parents doing that. Barbie is a toy, a plastic doll. She is meant to inspire us girls and empower us. Barbie lets us know, we can be whatever we want to be, especially in a world that regards women as less important. Im a huge barbie fan. I been hooked since I was 5, now 43. If your child is having body dysmorphia from a doll, you must not be doing your job as a parent.
I swear, people have nothing better to do than pretend to be offended by a doll. Why does it have to be ‘realistic?’ It’s a doll and it’s pretty and young girls love that! Some girls have aspirations of growing up, getting married and having a family. So why is it offensive that they had a pregnant doll? Lastly, the dolls of the world was such a beautiful concept to show that every culture is beautiful and to be celebrated. I don’t see how these things could be twisted, but idle time is the devil’s playground, that’s for sure😂This was such a tragically pathetic thing to complain about.
People will criticize Barbie for not being diverse enough, and then criticize them for making a hijab-wearing Barbie based on and endorsed by a real-life Muslim woman, saying they’re trying to commodify other cultures. Can’t win.

I actually own The Black Canary barbie, love it and they sure kept it true to the character.
Have originals of Ken and Barbie and lots of clothes…a wonderful time in my life and still displays them!❤❤❤
Its amazing how none of kids paid attention and just played with our dolls....its almost like we were playing with our toys...horrors.
This just sounds like people complaining and over analyzing children's toys
Haha!
I’m surprised you didn’t include the Barbie that came with a diet book that on the inside said “don’t eat” 💀
IKR AND THE ONE THAT CAME WITH A SCALE
Thanks to all of the people who get easily offended the quality of Barbie sucks now idc
Just goes to show you that you can't please everyone!
“Horrors of puberty” Excuse me? You wouldn’t say the same if it features a ken with an Adam’s apple
No matter what they do, someone will complain ❤
I love the whole being mad it took so long for a Muslim Barbie but also being mad that there is a Muslim Barbie...PICK ONE
I LOVED THE PREGNANT BARBIE !!!!! I bought my girls ALL Barbie’s, all accessories, all houses! i CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE 👠 💄 🎀
I remember a controversial Barbie., Butterfly Art Barbie, she had a tattoo.
That was the one I was thinking about! The mothers’ in so many of the military spouses clubs were going crazy about that.
I grew up on barbie’s and absolutely loved them!! Had the clothes the blow up furniture sets house, i had about it all !!!! People will always find something to B.tch about , JS
Bild Lilli was not a call girl… she worked in an office. Get your facts straight.
Math class IS tough for some of us.
I loved Barbie, and never wanted to be her!
I saw the dolls as models and I was fine with their bodies and that all the clothes and shoes were interchangeable. It is a toy. I didn't want short or curvy Barbie. Models are not those sizes.
Y’all why does the black canary barbie look like taylor swift…
It just a toy. Not your everyday problem in life😂
How dare Barbie wear a berret and hold a croissant lol 🤣
Seems like none asked the people they were intended for what they think..... the children. I've never heard so much crap.
Whatever barbie is made to represent a group of people there will still be people in that group who look slightly different they're at least trying to be inclusive you can't make a doll to look like everyone at once
Barbie is like Cadillac:
" WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM US???!!!!
WE TRIED EVERYTHING!!!!! "
Stereotypes exist for a reason, good or bad, they're not just pulled out of thin air.
I had a hundred Barbie's as child and my Aunt would buy me the Holiday Barbie to collect. I still get a Holiday Barbie every year from my husband now. Sometimes my Aunt would buy me 2, 1 to collect and 1 to play with.
"The perpetuated stereotype that girls are bad at math"
Me, a girl who was always bad at math: guess I'm not real 🙄
The main take away I get from this, is that Barbie will never win. She’s too thin, or too fat, or progressive or not progressive enough, she’s inclusive and also disrespectful, she’s honoring a culture or she’s capitalizing off of it, and her Down syndrome barbie got it right but it’s not good enough. There have been obvious misfires for the brand as this video points out, but a lot of controversy ignores the very positive things she’s done too
The dolls are for kids. But adult parents are mostly complaining. Guess they’re scared that their kids would look up at the doll instead of them. 😅
No one will ever be happy with every Barbie. It’s just like twitter in a lot of ways where a lot of people think every tweet must apply to their lives experiences.
As a 40 year old fan of Barbie all I can say is I'm team Midge
I still remember my barbie in 1980s
"...and her adorable chihuahua" lol
They forgot about Tattoo Barbie. The owners of these dolls could add tattoos to the surface of the doll. Only difference is, those tattoos would wash off. I think the dolls also came with temporary tattoos for the kid.
At least they had a Disabled Barbie in the Fashionistas Collection
the whole bit about switching out with GI Joe is hilarious!!!!!
I had the first Barbie;my brother cut her hair off 😢
My brothers blew up a couple of my dolls. lucky they didn't blow their hands off.
@@SMtWalkerS that’s hysterical! I hope you beat him up for that.
My sister and I one Christmas from our aunt and uncle❤❤!! My sister had gotten Barbie and I got Ken!!❤❤WE LOVED our Barbies😊😊😊! My mom had six daughters and we all had alot of Barbies!!!!!! I really wanted G .I. Joe😢. However KEN was COOL!!!I used to dress Ken in barbie dresses😮❤. My three brothers had G. I. Joe's... I ask my middle brother if I could put the military clothes on my Ken doll and to my surprise he let me😊!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. When I was older I started collecting Barbie dolls.
Frida doll to me looks pretty spot on to me🧐🤔🤣
ohmigod the black canary barbie was OBVIOUSLY made for adults, there is no arguing. it was a collectors doll. she was part of a line of dc characters who got dolls and they were MADE. FOR. COLLECTORS. and lol people can collect dolls and like comics. there are way more controversial barbies you could have put on this list.
Where’s the rollerblade one?
Late 90s very early 2000s barbies=the Best❤
My mom had the pregnant midge and she felt so awkward around the doll she told me
People are just never happy.
i think its so weird that people hate on barbie so much, shes literally just a girl
I had a growing up Skipper
I remember the snack Barbies and the unintentional bad taste Oreo Barbie who was Black
Bullying comes from other kids though. You can’t control how other people parent.
I was expecting oreo barbie to be on here
Right, and definitely Earring Magic Ken should have made this list!
I never appreciated Barbie until the last few weeks.
I’m glad Barbie worked it was
My childhood 😭
The “hello Barbie” is the same thing as “siri” “Alexis” and “Cortana” on phones/tvs/laptops.
At 6:30 I thought THAT WAS TAYLOR SWIFT
Omg the Muslim Barbie controversy got me facepalming. The criticism is just stupid!
You forgot the Ken doll that was taken off the shelves because he was gay.
People will criticize Barbie for not being diverse enough, and then criticize them for making a hijab-wearing Barbie based on and endorsed by a real-life Muslim woman, saying they’re trying to commodify other cultures. Can’t win.
Barbie 2010 I grew up with but the ones mentioned I didn't have
The more representation they add, the least represented people feel
I had Midge and her entire family. And I was crazy about them all lol
OMG! Some people will find any excuse to take offense! If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.
Omg I had the pregnant Midge doll!!!!!!!!!! I still have it somewhere actually. Lost the baby though.
When I was in Walmart last week, they had one Down Syndrome Barbie left and I made the comment to my mom 'She must be super popular.'
I had growing up skipper!
That doll seems awesome.
@@snicksabea she really was... if I remember correctly... key word here.. IF.. LOL. You pull down her are and her plastic boobs come out.. I got her for my birthday a d had her for a few weeks till my sis took her. Never saw her again.. lol
I always contended that Barbiw was a "high priced" call girl. even when I was younger and I had and loved Barbie. She bought multiple houses,as well as cars, airplanes, etc. And she had a suspicious number of jobs ( no visible means of support) I love Barbie and have quite a few that Ive aquied them since retiring.I make clothes and furniture as well as other accessories for her. BARBIE ROCKS
Growing Up Glam looked more like a Bratz Doll.
Surveillance Barbie and changeable fetus is kinda cringe worthy.
