Anytime this damn song played in the car my sister always stole the main part to sing which meant I was saddled with the harmony. It was always death. Love you sis.

Beautiful! Your lesson is the clearest for a group just wading into this magnificent song for the first time. Thank you! And I thank Rover for barking out the mystery harmony.

Pretty sure the mystery harmony is David paich and he's only ever sang that harmony live on a handful of occasions which probably explains why a lot of people's covers sound only 98% correct. It definitely makes the chorus sound more like the original, thank you for finally demonstrating the correct lines for us😊

@@familyvideos4968look up Toto’s 1991 Montreux performance and 1994 Rotterdam performance. You will hear David Paich’s third chorus harmony loud and clear.

@@pseudowoodo5010 it's definitely David paich, I've listened to the isolated tracks. Steve porcaro sang lead on its a feelin and a handful of others, but vocals on Africa is David paich (verse and harmonys) Steve lukather (harmony on chorus) and bobby Kimball taking lead vocals for the chorus.. no Steve porcaro

No matter how closely I listen to the original on Toto IV, I never hear ANY harmony on "It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you," not even the last one. Are you able to you point us to source material that includes this, @ThemcoversMB?
I really appreciate your attention to detail on this song!!

Love this video! I do have a single correction (I believe) however: On the recording, in the harmony you label 'low harmony 3' the first syllable of the word 'Africa' starts on the 2 of the scale of the song ('re' in solfège notation) that lasts for a full 8th note length before progressing to the 3 ('mi' in solfège). In your example above you hint at this note with the front of the dip in your pitch on the start of the word "Africa." The harmony works as you do it here, but if you listen to the original recording the 2 of the scale is the first note of "A..." of Africa, and is held for an 8th note before moving on to the 3 of scale. In every chorus including the tags at the end. It is subtle, but you can clearly hear one note moving on the syllable 'A..." while all others in the harmony stay the same. This little half step adds a wonderful complexity to the harmonies overall. Thanks for making this video! 👍

You are amazing. In Australian jazz singing we use the term M1 M2 M3 etc. Generally for males M1 and M2 gets our full range. Whilst our chest voice/M1 has more power for belting etc., we tend to use our head/M2 in the upper register and add some effect that sends a similar message to the listeners ear. The idea is that once you master it(I haven’t) you don’t really have both. You train your voice to transition through both M1 and M2 smoothy. This is not new but has become very common in contemporary singing. Sure, if you sing like Jimmy Barnes and if you are lucky enough to keep your voice throughout your life as he has, then 👍. Your head voice/M2 is perfect for songs like this. You blow me away with the quality of your harmonies. Thank you so much for these wonderful videos. 🍻😁
