"Some spells don't work in this new land." That's part of the lore, believe it or not. WotES is set in the Hollow World, which is actually the interior of the planet Mystara, a classic D&D setting. The Hollow World was created by the Immortal Ka the Preserver as a sort of "nature preserve" for creatures and civilizations that are extinct on the surface. To keep the Hollow World safe from incursion by Mystara's surface-dwelling people, the Immortal made magic in general much more difficult. This makes the Hollow World more savage and dangerous than Mystara, more "Conan the Barbarian" in feel, than the standard D&D fare. It also probably explains why the human kingdom that was about to get wiped out by goblins just got suddenly teleported there. Safe to assume they were about to go "extinct."
@@beardstyle I didn't grow up with D&D or 1st edition AD&D, but I did pick up the Hollow World box as a child because it looked interesting. A lot of the cultures in the Hollow World felt like cut-and-paste Earth civilizations, though the new races like the Hutaaka were interesting.

This game is quite amazing. I remember getting this game when i was six years old. This is the game that got me started on D&D. jump to now, I'm running D&D games professionally for my work, all because of a game i played as a boy. it's wild. Glad you're playing it through Jared!
Jared you just unlocked my brain! No joke, for YEARS I've been trying to remember a Sega game I played as a kid. I searched for a long time trying to find it through images but all that came up was Ultima. The moment you stepped outside the town walls and that music played it came rushing back. I need to play this along with you! Thanks so much!
Hey Jared, here are some tips. If your party member dies you must reorder the party and re equip the weapons and skills. When you are on a non combat situation smash that sneak skill button until he hides successfully ( he will blink and show a HIDDEN text above his picture). He will stay hidden until he attacks. So do it always when on field or before you enter a 3d dungeon (because monsters move in turns like in combat so it's better to hide before enter any maze. And equip sling/bow on the dwarf and fighter too because they will be able to attack at distance and use their melee weapon when monsters are close. Good luck.
Hell Yeah, Even if this ends up not being a full series for whatever reason. I'm going to watch every video start to finish. This is a series I've wanted for a while (even suggested it in the discord lol). I played the hell out of this game growing up, and died out side the main gates of town so many times lol. Loved this game!
I don't think I can express just how profound an effect this game had on me as a kid. It helped me develop my writing style, sense of design, sense of direction, taste in music. Not saying it is some flawless masterpiece - it is blatantly unfinished in a lot of places. But it was a key part of my childhood that made me who I am.
Love the mandatory pause and jam session after the earthquake! Someone should seriously make a campaign out of this. Great story for such and old game.
God I love this game! And the music just slaps so goddamn hard! EDIT: oh boy, Jared's going hard mode class-wise I see, lol. No healer is really gonna hurt, since on a rest you get spells back and can spend them before resting to heal the party up (so you only end up resting 8 hours to restore spells, instead of multiple days to heal). Dwarves are basically the superior version of Fighters, but with slightly less movement on the overworld; movement is radial to the start point, and doesn't factor in obstacles, so if you can get around a wall, you have full movement away from it as if it wasn't there (aside from the space it took up). As it says at the bottom, "C advances roster", and you can rotate back to the first member and change them; you aren't locked into a choice. You really need to reroll them to at least have their two primary stats very good if you want a decent chance at getting through this game. EDIT2: Man, knowing where all the hidden content is in the castle and how much better it makes you is nuts. Also, changing HP from bars to numerical value in the options menu is way, way, way better. Also, EVERYONE needs the best available ranged attack available to them; either a sling or a bow (magic-users can't use bows, nor can clerics and maybe halflings, but everything else can IIRC); melee combat is more a last resort, especially when you don't have good armor for everyone (and also if you need to pull them out of combat because they're at 1 HP, lol), and once you transition to the pseudo-realtime of caves, you can fire projectiles via spamming their button, and that can clear out a LOT of dangers, including ones you entirely aren't prepared to deal with at that point in time. EDIT3: Jared, ALWAYS check shops any time you do something "big". You're also missing at least one shop on the left (west) of the entrance. EDIT4: lol Jared... Every death you get unequipped, it's annoying, yeah.
For some reason I Love these playthroughs of old super classic DnD games, even though I know next to nothing about dnd (besides what I learned from jerd), I don't know I guess the raw RPG-ness of it and how hardcore and strategic they are make them a nice fit for jared.
