He definitely needs to smash his face into more things though, finding some of the secrets would help him level up like he needs to.
Everything but the 18 str from gauntlets is correct; once again, this is D&D 2nd ed rules, which means 18 strength is only a +1 to hit and +2 to damage. Also, the difference in weapons has to do with their range; spears can attack further, axes can attack further to the sides, and swords are the bog standard.
@@KainYusanagi the gauntlets don't actually help stat wise swinging a sword with 9 str and the gauntlets on still only does 1-6 damage. also i was intrigued by the range on melee weapons thing so i tested and ya sorry but the ranges don't change at all in this game. i tested spears swords axes and staff and they all have the same reach at all angles, would have been a neat thing though.
Pretty much every attack seems to hit way easier, both monsters and heroes. Plus the monsters definitely have WAY more hit points in the caves. Like, a beastman has over 20 etc.
Combat mechanics work differently in dungeons, allowing for some easy exploits. Had Jared found the lightning wand, he could use it to plow through anything that gets in his way, since it hits for 20 every time. Add in its bouncing off walls effect and you have a guaranteed 40 damage to anything on screen. Just remember to get out of the way.
I only know a few d&d games. Both on nes. First was more side scrolling and I needed to look it up bad bc I could not grasp the mechanics. To actually beat that game you need to understand and dragon boss at end, eh well this is why they say the journey is the reason. The other is more what I expected like this. A knight who can't hit a barn and my wizard was the only 1 I focused on. Watching this 1 really makes me want to go back to a Saturn game"shining the holy ask", hoping I got this right.
@@danrother3707 I think you meant “Shining the Holy Ark”. I have only ever played two games in the Shining series, Shining Force 1 and 2 on Genesis/MD, though they are T-RPGs instead of First Person Dungeon Crawlers like Shining in the Darkness (MD) and the one on Saturn.

Carrion crawlers hit 8 times with their tentacles. They do not do any damage with them, but each hit must make a save vs poison or be paralyzed for 2d4 turns (1 turn about 1 minute). If the whole party is paralyzed or the paralyzed friend is left behind, the crawler devours the victims whole. Also their THAC0 is 16 so they have a pretty damn high chance to hit even a high AC character.

Hey everyone. Back again with more mechanics info for the game. Let's look at the Elf class today. The Elf is the strongest class in the game. They can use all weapons, all armor, and all arcane spells up to 5th level (only 3 per level though). Elves can also find secret doors like the thief class! To make up for this they level up absurdly slowly, they take almost double the xp value to level up than other classes! Thats... actually pretty much it for elves. We have time so let's look at the WORST class in the game the Halfling. Halflings are like... bad fighters mixed with bad thieves. And they also only reach max level 8. They can use MOST weapons and all armor. The ability to use Swords is good but they cannot use bows! Slings only. They can hide like thieves but I cant tell if they can disarm traps and cant read scrolls. They're honestly just... worse than thieves in all regards except AC.
Elves disables traps? Have you seen this happened? Haven't seen my Elf disable a trap in the times I have used him/her. Lost count on how many times I played this game but that pyramid that has a but load of traps never seen a disarm done by the elf. Thief yes.
@@igable82 I cant quite say for certain but I recently replayed the game and I went through the Aztec temple and disarmed almost all the traps. Bit it doesnt say WHO disarmed the traps unfortunately. You could be right I've never run without a thief somewhere... they cant disarm while dead can they?
@@TheBlueFoxeh No they cannot, I believe. Unless that is another bug to disarm while dead. I have run into times my elf did not see a secret door. I've run without a Theif and every trap hits my team that I walk into. The elf is in my team fyi. I usually run an elf 90% of the time. You most likely had very good rng with the theif on that run. I do not believe an elf can disarm traps. I would say in your comment best to say you "believe" but to state it as fact. Others odds are will end up springing traps and wonder why isn't the elf working.
In d&d basic, the halfling class is listed as having a couple things going for it. It uses the same saves as a Dwarf, which is to say: damn good. They also gain certain combat bonuses. A -2 AC bonus anything larger than man-sized, a +1 to hit with any missile, and a +1 individual initiative bonus (if optional individual initiative is used). It's very hard to tell if any of this made it into the game. The game manual says they can use any armor, and any shield, and all weapons except spears. I don't exactly remember if they could use a bow or not. Edit: Halflings can indeed use bows.
Oof Jared you can rest inside the dungeon. You just have to be a bit farther from monsters. I think you were actually pretty close to the exit that first run.
This is definitely one of my favorite series so far. Never heard of this before, but then I've mostly played the PC AD&D games of the early 90s. This is very similar to them in many ways so it's interesting to see the differences.

I actually got a handful of the YM2151 FM Synthesizer and YM3012 DAC to try to build my own gadget but I've been lazy and not done it yet
Yea, Warriors of the Eternal Sun is pretty brutal. You can rest in a dungeon to sleep off the "stuck" effect. Tuatara where one of the four giant lizards (Gecko, Draco, Tuatara, Horned Chameleon) in the D&D Basic Set. Keep at it, slow and steady wins the race. Also, as already mentioned, you can equip your dwarf and fighter with a ranged weapon. Place it in the right weapon/item slot and attack with the B button (I think it's that one -- sorry, playing this through emulation now and always forget the buttons). And you can give your thief and mage melee weapons. They can attack with them in a dungeon.

a tuatara is an almost-lizard. it's got a translucent scale on its forehead that lets light in to the pineal gland. so it's basically a dragon. also yeah the standard genesis sound chip could be made to make some very nice music, but sound effects.. not so much.
Did you also chuckle when he built a party without a cleric? Of all the character classes in the game that is the *one* I would never leave out lol Even just for the bless spell, a cleric is so useful, then the healing abilities. Hey Jared. thanks to you I got interested in playing some old-school DnD game. can I recommend the PC Game "Eye of the Beholder"? the whole collection is on Steam.
The reason why you can't do anything when the carrion crawler was attacking is that in the dungeons, you are still in turn based combat. It just normally goes by so fast it seems like real time combat.
so a Tuatara is a lizard-like reptile endemic to New Zealand. Or a US-built hypercar that supposedly is built to do 300 mph. I think these fall into the former category, though I quite like the latter.
I watched every second of this series so far, and every second of it I find myself jamming out to the music. This music is way too good for this game, no offense the game is awesome and very ambitious but damn the music
Generally, with an optimal party, you want to be about level 3-4 mainly because of one monster encounter before the Swamp that will wreck your shit of you can't get an Entangle off. Entangle is one of the most broken spells in this game. With the optimal party you would have heals and two people with entangle.
@@cameronholtan3407 The phobosuchus is such an iconic fight that I have had its name burnt into my mind since my childhood, hahaha. Most of the time I just ran around it, since the room is big enough.
Some of this music was in the Genesis Shadowrun game right? Actually now that I'm paying attention to the overworld movement I'm pretty sure they were made by same developer/engine.
Maybe Jared needs to rest in the cave instead of resetting progress by leaving, the message that was given for being unable to rest, was that there were monsters nearby, not that he was underground like saving's message was. Though, I have no idea what effect resting has on the spawns of monsters either.
No effects in spawns. Just sometimes hard to rest since if you try to rest I think if there is a monster on the other side of the wall it counts as being near even if there is no easy straight way of getting to your location.
I honestly would recommend just grinding a few levels on the main map before progressing the story. This game can be very unforgiving. It’ll make you tougher and maybe you can buy some better weapons or spells with the extra money you make. One major tip though: DO NOT THROW AWAY THE WITHERED VINE.
I remember the first time I came up against a carrion crawler. I was a low-level newbie in BatMUD and saw one in Digga's Newbie Place. I asked someone what it is and he was like "It's just a big caterpillar that eats corpses" For a mid-level player like him, it probably was just a caterpillar, but to me it was a deadly fight. Left me more than half dead, forcing me to log off so I wouldn't simply die in the next encounter. Seriously, fuck those things.
Well Jared, you could always resort to abusing the bug with the theif's hidden skill. Cast it outside a dungeon and then go in. As long as you don't rest inside a dungeon he does insane dmg. But it is a bug, up to you.
@@Bloodyshinta1 On a bug, that he has the option to use. LMAO! Sure dude. This is exactly like that. Don't want to make the game easier for yourself don't use it. This comes back again, have the willpower to not use a bug, not my responsibility if you don't.
Oh no, you lost all that sweet progress and the experience points. :( Also, too bad that the first run was actually the best so far. I hope you can do this!
I know it's terribly parasocial and probably a few other words to suggest this, but I honestly think this channel would grow faster if there was more interaction from Jerd's side of things down here in the comments... Doesn't matter if it's someone pretending to be him, pretending to care about random people saying random stuff. This place always feels so empty.
I've thought the same for basically years now. I assume he's at least up to date on his discord feedback stuff, but here it's often kind of dry. I Know he reads a bit of comments, or at least has someone read them for him, but you won't find out about what he's seen til a week later or more. Even some hearts would go a long way so it feels like comments mattered.
This is the first real dungeon in the game. Gonna be hard, but you kind of need your whole party to survive until the end because there's more afterward
Funny how (on the second, third, fourth... try) Jared knew the carrion crawler was there, yet refused to use Entangle on it despite knowing it to be the greatest threat by far.
Well it's too late now since you record in advance, but weren't there other shops that might have had upgraded items that you could have visited besides buying new chain mail?
Jared you SUPPOSED to grind experience, because Dylan needs levelups and more hit points badly. And he doesnt get any because how low his constitution is. 11 for fighter is horrible amount without any bonuses.

It's crazy to see how far D&D has come from advanced to 5th edition these days.
But hey, as long as Jareds having a good time it don't matter what he went with :P I'm just glad to see he's starting to utilize vlad's spells more. It's been pretty fun watching him fight the carrion crawler and me just yelling "use your entangle" for him to finally use it haha.
@@dailencaudron2051 totally! The fact that he used it as basically his last ditch effort when it’s so powerful in this game is hilarious. I just hope he realizes it wasn’t a fluke and keeps using it!
you can sleep in caves just not when there are monsters around
Hey Jared. thanks to you I got interested in playing some old-school DnD game. can I recommend the PC Game "Eye of the Beholder"? the whole collection is on Steam.
This is brutal.
Liking this play through I hope you are able to keep it going.
So the castle was moved to scenic New-Zealand... I guess the DM is a fan of the Lord of the Rings movies!
Went from D&D to Wolfenstein
I was not expecting Kiting in an old Genesis dnd dungeon crawler.
Pretty invested in this series. Hope you'll continue it 👍
I watched every second of this series so far, and every second of it I find myself jamming out to the music. This music is way too good for this game, no offense the game is awesome and very ambitious but damn the music
Methinks Jared is a bit under-leveled for this cave dungeon.
12:27 If only you had a certain wizard who hops around on one foot to spam his,"URWFTH-QUAKE!" spell...
Some of this music was in the Genesis Shadowrun game right? Actually now that I'm paying attention to the overworld movement I'm pretty sure they were made by same developer/engine.
Everyone's offering hints to help, but isn't half the fun watching Jared lose his mind.
It's pretty risky for Jared not to have taken a Cleric in the group. Poison, paralysis, etc, all things the Cleric might help with.
Sadly the spells for that are not until later...way later. If I remember right.
You can sleep off the stuck status while in the cave, you just can't save in the cave. 👍
You give me anxiety. Just rest when there’s no enemies nearby damn it!
Giant toad jumpscare got me
I honestly would recommend just grinding a few levels on the main map before progressing the story. This game can be very unforgiving. It’ll make you tougher and maybe you can buy some better weapons or spells with the extra money you make.
One major tip though: DO NOT THROW AWAY THE WITHERED VINE.
that is one mean cave
how do all these animals survive in there with being that close to each other
Menagerie Cave
I remember the first time I came up against a carrion crawler.
I was a low-level newbie in BatMUD and saw one in Digga's Newbie Place. I asked someone what it is and he was like "It's just a big caterpillar that eats corpses"
For a mid-level player like him, it probably was just a caterpillar, but to me it was a deadly fight.
@@Bloodyshinta1 I'll leave that to the decision of whoever reads this. If they can't help themselves then that isn't my issue.
@@Bloodyshinta1 On a bug, that he has the option to use. LMAO! Sure dude. This is exactly like that. Don't want to make the game easier for yourself don't use it. This comes back again, have the willpower to not use a bug, not my responsibility if you don't.
reallly needed to bring a lot of potions and such into here cause this is probably gonna be rough without some healing!
Can't you give the melee dudes bows as secondary weapons to get through caves easier? Is my shit all mixed up?
You can, he just has not done that.
Jeez, thank the Mystaran gods that this is JRPG poison and not old-school D&D poison.
Because most are instant death.
You can rest in dungeons as long as there’s no monsters nearby
Rough going today lol. Keep at it my dude :D /
This is just Everything.cave. All animals live here, apparently.
Bipedal owlbears? Uh oh dragonstrike wasn't wrong
Oh no, you lost all that sweet progress and the experience points. :(
Also, too bad that the first run was actually the best so far. I hope you can do this!
"It's only pahtial paralysis."
If you can fire arrows like Legolas, I'd give every character a bow. Lol
Editor Dylan saying "Not cuttin' it!" and other editing jokes needs to be a thing.
Funny how (on the second, third, fourth... try) Jared knew the carrion crawler was there, yet refused to use Entangle on it despite knowing it to be the greatest threat by far.
Jared is really, really bad with using his magic up front, reserving it only for dire need.
...and no cleric.
Yay progress
Hey Jared...How accurate is it that everyone else has more HP than Editor Dylan?
Just how ragged do you run that poor man?!
Thousands of gold pieces worth of arrows haha
Thoughts on button mashing face as the new channel logo?
Well it's too late now since you record in advance, but weren't there other shops that might have had upgraded items that you could have visited besides buying new chain mail?
Rocking the three button
Is no one going to tell him the Gauntlets don't work?
Jared you SUPPOSED to grind experience, because Dylan needs levelups and more hit points badly. And he doesnt get any because how low his constitution is. 11 for fighter is horrible amount without any bonuses.
I've been watching this like WHY DIDNT YOU TAKE A CLERIC and WHY DIDNT YOU REROLL DYLAN WHEN YOU REALIZED HE HAD TERRIBLE STATS
Then I realized that the video is far more entertaining that way. Lol.
