It's not really fair to say that Ruth deceived Frederic. He asked her if she was beautiful and she said people had told her so, but not lately. Then Frederic asked for RUTH'S OPINION of how she looked, and she said she believes that she's still a fine woman. You can't get that mad with subjective answers like that...
@TRWolf Well, if I haven't been misinformed, the Cornish pronounce their 'R's, so the orphan/often confusion wouldn't have worked if they'd all had the Cornish accent.
I was already hot for Kevin Kline when I saw PIRATES. But who else could sing, and cross one leg over the other and balance on one booted foot when in the squatting position?!? He was unbelievable in this! I know he did it in Joe Papp’s production in Central Park. I swear, if I lived in NYC I would have been there every night! 🥰
Thanks for putting these up CrayfordDresden ;) My school is doing this play soon ") My friends all keep asking how I know all the people's lines and songs lol :)
one of the best Fredric on audio recording imo was the late Ivor Emmanuel - - Lansbury certainly was wonderful despite not having a contralto-weight voice
@ProdigyStepper She told Fredric that she was a beautiful woman when he was younger, thus, having never seen a woman as a pirate apprentice, he believed her.
I was thinking your name looked very familiar, so I looked you up and I realised I'd watched all your videos last year on the US-UK language differences. I guess you're the guy to go to for all the dialect questions.
Hana Viktorinova, I guess maybe English is not your strongest language, or you just did not understand the meaning of the lyrics, but Ruth did NOT swear to Frederic that she was beautiful; she said that she had been told she was beautiful, but not lately. In other words, she was considered to be beautiful when she was younger, but since then living as a maid with a bunch of pirates for nearly 20 years, nobody has told her differently. Since beauty is subjective, the only thing she has to go on is what she last was told by others, and hence there is no lie or falsehood. So....your argument is invalid. Of course, she might have figured that she was now probably less beautiful than when she was younger, and suggested that to him, but really she already covered that with her initial 'she had been told she was beautiful, but not lately' statement. It is Frederic's naivete, and his desperation to find a beautiful wife, now that he is free of the pirates, that is to blame for the misunderstanding.
@@kingofsweden3745 , what are you trying to say? You appear to be trying to refute what I wrote, but you don't actually do that. My point was simply that Ruth did not "lie" to Frederick, rather she neglected to share a totally subjective opinion that others MIGHT have about her. She only says, "lost lost lost" because now she is confronted with younger women, which has no bearing on whether or not she herself is, of was, beautiful to somebody else. And as for the pirates not telling here one or way or the other regarding her perceived beauty is not part of the story. It is quite clear from the dialogue that they never said anything to her one way or another, although they privately think that as an older woman she does not look very good to them anymore. In their words, "There are the remains of a fine woman about her".
ProdigyStepper As Fredric had never seen a woman before (he had been at sea for a long time) the rest of the crew and Ruth convinced him that she was a fair woman. After seeing the girls in this scene, he realized Ruth lied to him. Sorry I was 6 years late. You probably don't even care anymore😂

Angela Lansbury is a gem of acting and performance.
I did this show back in middle school, I played the pirate king, but I remember waiting in the stage wing listening to this song. I loved it so much.
i love that vibrato he does near the end when he sings trusted so
Oh Ruth is verrry...well! Very well, indeed! There are the remains of a fine woman about Ruth.

Haahah, you can in farce like this! :P
And she IS a fine woman! She's adorable.
I’m more concerned with the fact that she was basically his adoptive mother and she wanted to fuck him

She looks older than 47
She was 57 or 58 when this was filmed.
ruth lied, she swore to him she was beautiful. when he saw the girls, he saw she has lied. she has devieved him....

Was Angela Landsbury ever not old?
Try to find the movie National Velvet.
Or 1947's 'The Portrait of Dorian Gray'.
The Court Jester 1956
Harvey Girls - 1946
what did ruth lie about?
