    I've never seen the Scottish Highlands but it's pretty much what I thought it would look like. What a desolate, lonely but totally beautiful place to be. It's hard to imagine the Bothy was actually lived in all those years. It's a beautiful old homestead, too. Thanks for sharing a bit of Scotland with me.

    A place really comes alive once people start crossing the threshold into it. Glad there's these buildings where wet and cold adventurers can get out of the elements and warm up. Stay safe!! Happy trails to you.

    That was a wet walk in mate. Not a bothy I've ever been to, so good to see what it looks like inside. I must admit the first thing I do is bag my spot and get my sleeping gear out. It's bad etiquette when people suggest the bothy is full or make you feel uncomfortable, as you should always make room for later arrivals.

    • @StripeyHatGuy
      @StripeyHatGuy  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah wet and cold 😂. I am completely with you with bagging the spot, for me it was in this case a wee bit different as I was going to use the common room (fire place) and I wasn't sure how I personally would like it if someone else would do it so I waited a bit. I am sure no one would mind when someone uses the common room as long as the person doesn't mind that other might be longer or earlier awake.

      @@StripeyHatGuy it's fairly common for the first arrivals to bag the best room in the house. What's worth considering if people want to socialise in the main room and you want to retire for the night. I've only had one bad bothy night in around 50 bothy trips. 🔥

      Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences Robin, helps newbies like me quite a lot. Makes me the next time for sure feel more confident and yeah the world is not turning around single people - together rather than alone is for sure the right approach when using a bothy.

    Gorton's unique 'managed air flow' (drafty as hell) keeps it relatively fresh, but also makes it a right pain to heat, even with a load of coal. That was a properly wet walk in. I like the idea of asparagus to accompany your steak. I've done steak and chips in Gorton, but the chips are a right faff and involve hefting in the requisite oil - still, at least it burns. Thanks for sharing. The amount of times you've had to wade through the river crossings to get the footage and recover the camera is not lost on me.

      Hi 'A Scotsman Outdoors'! Honestly cooking some nice food is a great way to kill some time when it is long dark outside. The boil in a bag have for sure a place in the outdoorsy world - for me personally they are just a kind of expensive for what you get - particular for my type of tours I am doing. And in summer I don't mind to cold soak/just eat sandwiches 😂.

    not sure about the red candles man hehehehe also a vaguely recall some experiments, 14mph knee deep water is enough to sweep you off your feet, so even if its not too bad to get swept away a bit, it is really bad to get completely soaked on the hills, lets be careful out there.

      Hi Madmacs FPV, that is absolutely right. I can say from personal experience (during summer, without rucksack) that knee deep is the max you want to do when you can see little waves breaking on the water. I wouldn't have crossed the last burn without trekking poles 😎.

    A few things crossed my mind, first who packs in the wood for the fire? Second, what about the latrine? yeah you can tinkle out in the weeds, but what about the #2? would get unsanitary if every one just squats in the weeds!

    • @StripeyHatGuy
      @StripeyHatGuy  Рік тому +1

      Hi Frank 👋,
      you need to bring your own supplies, including any wood. When you need a number two you just get away from the bothy (usually there is a map inside which shows where a good place is) and any water source and dig a hole. The toilet paper you need to take out with you home or you decide to burn it in the fire.
      When you are interested, under www.mountainbothies.org.uk/bothies/bothy-code/ you can find much more information.

    Hey Stripey. I liked the hike to the Bothy. What do you think of the Sealskinz waterproof socks, have you tried them? You said you use Wool, which is good. Serk

    • @StripeyHatGuy
      @StripeyHatGuy  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Serk,
      I used some 'Denmark Endurance' socks, basically some wool socks. You can also get just some army wool socks which is probably cheaper. The advantage of wool in general is that it still keeps you warm when wet which was the reason why I wore them. Of course it was really cold but after a few minutes walking my feet felt almost warm again.
      I never tried Sealskinz as I am happy with wool and my feet like to breath as they start fairly quick to sweat tbh and socks are little so weight isn't for me personally an issue.
      Hope it helps!

    Your right I saw a guy on here who went to sky and there were two sleeping areas one for family of 5 maybe, that size of flat board anyway and a top bunk that could sleep two, I couldn’t believe it when he parked his kit on the outside edge of the five person space, it was like he was saying, I’m here first so four of you can climb over me. I found that really rude and territorial, then after he was alone for an hour , exactly five people turned up in a group, I don’t know what he did about his selfish park up, as he did not say or show, I’m in the same mind as you, bothies are emergency shelter for bad days, or if your not a tent person for whatever real reason, but they have a code, everyone is equal share care and replenish the supplies, I to would have slept on the floor until I see who comes, maybe kids come,no one knows, your a good and kind considerate person.
    Also I watched another you tuber on here who was disgusted by the rubbish that people left and there was no wood, but he just left it like it, I say if we want to keep these bothies for us , it doesn’t matter who left the mess it takes nothing to take it away, especially how close his car was. When I used to use Bothys it was in a time when all you had were co- ordinances and they were really lifesavers, I remember climbing a monroe back in 1987, I though I was going to die, and suddenly there was this tiny cottage, I didn’t even know what a bothy was ! But I tentatively pushed the door, and realised why the place was there, to save people like me who had got lost in bad weather, there was not wooden sleeping areas but stone ones, a massive fire and cans of baked beans a waterfall near by, a big one. I’m shocked when I see people using these havens for piss ups, and wanting to be the first one there, the magic has gone and no one that I’ve seen uses the material like saws and wood placed there to replenish what they used, I’m sad about it😢 but I guess I come from a time when Bothys were a sacred place gifted by land owners and philanthropy to save lives, I’ve subscribed to your channel and unsubscribed from some that just use bothies for a piss up in a brewery I’m glad you kept your face of the camera in the last one I watched, I thought you might, not your kind of being, than you stripy head guy for being you.
