Pretty amazing how this is one of the best reviews ive watched for this pedal and to notice its 5 years old. GREAT JOB! still recommend this pedal for amp sim?. recordingrevolution
@JohnTheRipper2 It depends what output you are using. The XLR output will treat it like a DI with it bypassed, with speaker emulation. The 1/4 inch out acts simply like a bypassed pedal.
Great review, Graham. Simple and straightforward unlike 75% of other reviews I've watched with people just picking up a guitar or bass and playing their favorite song without bothering to give a rundown. I just bought one to show a friend how valuable something like this can be instead of lugging around his amp to practice. Do you have any idea how it sounds with a bass guitar? Plenty of people use guitar effect boxes with their basses and I've heard other bassists say they use the acoustic V-tones. I thought this might be a bit more versatile.
@TheSkullisher Yeah, that's what you can totally do. The GDi21 acts like a guitar amp with a mic up on it, so the XLR out should right into your audio interface, no prob.
@xxxxneoxxxx It acts like a typical DI. So you use a mic cable (female XLR to male XLR) then plug it into an open channel on the console. Hope that helps!
well guys this is an excellent pedal in my opinion I have and recommend it and top it it simulates amplifiers and also works very well as distortion. 1-I would say if you use it as a distortion place at the beginning of the set 2-if you use it as ammeter put at the end of the set of this form you use with the three buttons down in my opinion simulating a very good fender bluesbreaker amp. 3-of this second option you can also use it as a direct box with two outputs one p10 for you to connect in your amp and microphone to sound desk and the other left canon balanced to send it directly to the sound desk
First i thought ( for Mesa solo sound) it was too noisy, but then i turned the drive and level down , and voila! almost no noise at all it being an amp modeler and with heavy distortion...then i went to my heavy solo sounds from my Zoom G2, and noticed that they too are noisy ( zoom has a good noise reduction...) and together they work very well cause this Behr has so many controllin options!with Zoom`s eq tweaking combined...so It stays with me as a control unit to my heavy solo sounds with chorus and echo and hall reverb and what not from zoom for cutting some treble and adding some sustain...I also have other little pedals that act the same way tone turned down to calm the zoom heavy sounds, but this Behr does more giving deepness and sustain and with hot, high gain and mic replacement vow! plus its all analog and i dont have to programme it ( Ispent a lot of time to balance my 10 zoom sounds) so this works really as a fine tuner...! If this one breaks ill miss it and buy another one...CHEERS EVERYONE!!!
nice review! I am new to home recording, Could you please explain what the difference is between an audio interface (by which I mean something like the behringer UCA 202) and a DI box like the stomp you reviewed? Thanks again for the video.
does this di box work well as a simulator ,so i would have it at the end of my pedal board ( over drive/bigmuff/volume/revend/analog delay/ddaly ) so i can plug straight into my church board ?
thanks sir..i just bought it..and im amazed..it became my clean bosst.i dont know how..but i just set it up on the clean settings off-axis and the tweed..anyway..thanks to you..good job! :)
Hi Graham! I'm considering getting one, and I was planning putting it on my live rig, except that I want to run fuzz pedals before this unit before it goes onto the PA. Have you ever tried doing that, i.e. fuzz into a clean voice in the GDI 21 directly into a mixer or a recording interface and what are your opinions on it? Would be great if you can post a video too so we can hear for ourselves! Thanks!
I have one and it sucks batteries quite quickly and that results bad noisy sound so I think an adaptor is a must for it. I have tried it with my Fostex MR-8 recorder using 6.3 jack cable but I was not satisfied with the sound quality (it was harsh and noisy). Probably it would be better with using the XLR output but I am not sure.
you can help me figure out if l can go with the v tone in a mixer and play in ipianto and have a nice clean but l would use it just as an amp simulator clean because others in the chain would pedals to sound like distortion that live in the mix in ipianto sound like shit...with v tone on or simola amp clean and turning the distortion improves the sound of distortion i mean ...suona well??
Thanks for the outstanding review!!! I've been on the fence about buying the GDI21, but now it's a definate yes. You should change your name to Henry David, cause you are definately thorough (Thoreaux) Ha, ha. You rock!!!!
@jessinator100 Thanks for the reply. Dunno where to get some earphone amps. And I don't think I can buy some now since I already brought a cheap acoustic guitar for traveling. Your reply was helpful.
@recordingrevolution Thanks for the reply. Is it better to feed it into the effects loop return or the front input of the amp when using the 1/4 inch output?
The Brit and the Cali modes are significantly louder than the tweed one while I’m keeping the same parameters. Does this happens to anyone else out there or is it just mine?
@recordingrevolution so the setup for a direct recording is like this: guitar -> GDI21 (XLR Output) -> Audio Interface --> Computer? What if I want to use stompboxes, do I put it before the GDI21?
Got one of these on sale for practically nothing... I mostly have it on the Tweed setting and use it mostly as a clean tone sweetener, best pedal I ever bought for a fraction of what all my others cost.
This is a very good review but I think you are mistaken about the cab simulation on the XLR in bypass. There's nothing in the documentation. Behringer say "Dual DI mode for either direct recording output with speaker simulation or standard active direct injection box in bypass mode " So there's speaker sim when the unit is on OR none when it is off and just running as a DI box. For recording I found the distorted sounds can be improved by using a VST cab sim like LeCab. Again, nice review.
Greeat review! I'm just about to buy my first guitar (I'm a bass player) and wanted a cheap modeller that I can plug directly into my PRE-73 (which is connected to my comp). This will fit the bill!
would this work putting it first just before my digitech screamin blues overdrive its awesome but it has a digital sound to it obviously i use it first in command of my chain for all types of music really in my repoirtoire and doesnt have to be on to work in chain to switch things up but i dont like the digital sound of it so i was thinking of getting this to put first just before and being more bypass would be helpful
I have one of these but it is different mine is a preamp/di box with mid freq, trebel, mid, basss, leval, blend, pad, gnd/lift defiantly none of the amp moddles it seems different pedal same moddle number which is strange
Question. Is the speaker simulation only on the XLR output or is it also on the 1/4 output as well (when the pedal is engaged)? Also, when you use it with your amp onstage, does the 1/4 output have enough level to drive a power amp (thru the effects loop return) or do you need to go into the front input?
I want this to be in this kind of chain, guitar>dirt pedals>V-TONE>delay>reverb. Now if I want a balance signal, can I use XLR Output straight to the PA but still I got my delay and reverb with the same signal flow (my chain)? Is it like, guitar>dirt pedals>V-TONE(as pre-amp)>delay>reverb>PA?
hi sir..i wanted to ask.if i can use it together with my boss gt 5 multi fx and capture the effects on the boss gt5? can i connect it to the P.A. using GDI21 and still the effects of the boss gt 5 be heard on the P.A.? should i loop it on the multi effects? i hope you can help..i just wanted to lessen the volume my guitar on the stage..thanks! God Bless..
It is still a great pedal...even after all these years...but you can't see where the knobs and switches are, so I put some silver-paint on them. Why didn't Behringer improve the visibility of the knobs and switches in the last 9 years? Am I the only one who thinks it sucks you can't see where the pedal is at?
If I buy the bass version of this, which is BDi21, can I put the bass in it and then connect it right to a computer (a laptop) and then start recording?
i have a strat thinking about getting one later i've got some more stuff i could suggest if you're interested was thinking about getting one of these to go before my scream blues overdrive and to the rest of my rig it's good to see a fellow christian take care man
@z3r0sh1ft I don't think you could without some kind of adapter. ask someone at radio shack which adapter or adapters to use to plug "an eighth-inch stereo jack at line level" to a "quarter inch mono jack at line level".
Andrés Berreondo do you run all of your fx pedals/chain before the GDI or after?? I’m assuming before but idk what the most effective way would be or do you line the GDI as your OD in your FXchain for optimal sound??? I know this is subjective but I’d like to get opinions on this
@@lukerietzke182 my signal chain is Comp - OD - Fuzz - Chorus - Delay - Reverb - GDI, at least that's the way I do so i can use the GDI as a "clean amp" for pedal platform.
Andrés Berreondo I see. I only ask because I tried putting a wah before it and it didn’t bring out the wah fx as effectively as placing the wah after the GDI, but I have been using the GDI as a clean/dirty channel changer. I think you have it right for using as just a clean channel. Interesting
Yes you can. You wouldn't need a cab emulation, the unit emulates the sounds of a miked cab already. The mic switch will allow you to switch between the sounds that come from different micing positions. The pedals chain goes into it in the same order as it would be if it was sent into a regular guitar amp.
Graham, another worship leader recommended a Behringer Ultra G DI for electric guitar into PA...would the GDI21 be a good substitute? ...price is close, but GDI21 clearly has more versatility. Thanks, Steve
Hey a little question, mate. What kind of cable do you exactly use to connect this into a PA Mixing console? Is it a female XLR to 6.3mm jack? I'm buying a GDI21 next month for my birthday.
Can you plug in your guitar on it, and plug gd straight on your PC and play? Without any further interface? To make this straight. Is it plug n play stuff? Thanks guys! :)
Hi. Just bought this myself. I believe that in order to record your signal you DO need an interface and go from the DI out on the pedal. Or you can plug it into a mixer og an active speaker/monitor of some sort. This thing rocks. I have seen/heard GCI21 vs. the original tech21 and I hear no difference. The price itself is redicoules compared to the quality of sound. Only thing is that its kinda plastic like and not so cool to look at.
Very nice demo. The most demo's give only a whoepwhoepwhoep sound with a lot of distortion. You vary from clean to moderate distortion. I like that. The only thing what bothers me is that on my amp(s) Fender frontman and Kustom lead the behr gdi21 sounds terrible! A lot of very annoying ear bleeding high frequencies in the sound which I can not dial out. How did you do that in this demo because it is in this demo only slightly present.
I have experienced unpleasing noises too with this pedal. I was connecting it to a multitrack recorder through the jack output. A few years ago I have started to build a Sansamp GT-2 pedal which is the original circuit (Behringer has copied it) and now I regret that I have never finished it. Building this gadget with proper good quality components instead of the cheapest SMD parts (which are in this pedal) probably might improve the sound quality. I wonder how it compares to the original SansAmp GT-2.
Thats probably because the unit doesnt output a dry sound like a conventional stompbox and instead outputs the sound of a miked guitar speaker. So when you put it through another guitar speaker it doesnt sound right. Unless theres a way to bypass the mic switch its better to play it through a line-in or preamp and listen over linear loudspeakers. I'm pretty sure he recorded a direct feed of the unit in this video
GDI21 functions as a preamp, so is it safe if I put it LAST, after my series of effect chain, just like how I would set my effect pedals before a Head Amp? I'm confused how to treat this GDi21...
+xxxxneoxxxx Incorrect. You just have to adjust it to fit your amp. It can go in front of the amp. It functions as a distortion pedal there. As far as pedal board chain....put it where you like your distortion pedals.
