Very helpful tutorial. I would absolutely appreciate more complex discussions on MS Word Fields. I always had the notion that most of the dynamic texts and numbers in word had something to do with fields, but I never knew the direct link.
I hope you can find those tutorials to help you. I have never dug into Word's fields much more than I outlined in this video, but if I ever do, I certainly will consider making a new tutorial on them. Thanks and take care.
Thank you! This is very helpful as I've used Word my entire life and never knew about fields! I'd love some help with something I'm stuck with- I want to add chapter numbers in the heading but it's just not working! if I use the {section} field, the first chapter will have the number 2 (because the first section has the title etc, and I can't find if the {styleref} field (applied to chapters in a heading style) has a way to do this. Thank you for the help! 🙏😭
I'm glad it was helpful, and thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, I have not used fields very much and so am not an expert with them. However, if you search through Allen Wyatt's material on wordribbon.tips.net/index.html, you might find what you're looking for. Allen is one of the foremost experts on MS Word. Good luck.
Very helpful viddeo! Thanks, David. Is there a way I can add a field named "Version" and use the same field at say 5 different locations including footer ? When I edit the field in one place, the new value should appear at all 5 places. Thanks!
I'm sorry, Sudeep Khire, but I haven't gotten that deep into fields. You might use a search engine to check out WordTips - I think it's .net - Allen Wyatt there is very knowledgeable. Take care.
Thanks for your comment. And yes, I'll certainly put more about fields in Word on my list of videos to make in the future. Maybe there can be an "Intermediate Fields" and an "Advanced Fields" video?
Thanks for your comment. As I make these videos, I ask myself before each one, "What do people need to have in place before watching this?" and then during the video, "What questions might people have - or how could they possibly misunderstand?" Hopefully, this makes my videos more helpful.
David's Tutorials excuse me sir. Could you tell me programs that you used to record and edit the video? It's wonderful. Wasn't it edited in one program? I would appreciate it you tell me.
I'm the same as you, Aravind, except I had been using it for more than 15 years. I KNEW these existed (after all, how else could they do page numbers?), but never knew more about them until I did research for this video.
thanks for sharing this with us.. whats about if I want to write down the number of the words in every page, not in the whole document..is that possible? thanks again
Indeed there is! And because of your question, I just made a NEW tutorial showing you exactly how to do this. It is scheduled to go live at 7AM this Friday morning, so be sure you've subscribed and clicked the bell icon so UA-cam will send you a notice when it goes live. If you don't want to get notices after that, you can unclick the bell icon.
Very clear! Thanks! Is there an easy way to update document properties from the document view? I don't want to edit the field but the value stored in the custom property that have been defined. (Like "client name" and "project name", "project number" etc)
Thanks for your comment, and you are the first person to ask for this. I had not thought of doing a video on intermediate and advanced field usage, but I'll certainly consider it now.
@@DavidsTutorials Thank you for your reply. It would be nice if you did the intermediate/advanced level. You have a great way of explaning things and I definitely enjoy watching a video tutorial more than if I had to read about it.
Nowhere have I been able to find how to set the pagenumber count for multiple contiguous sections in a Word document. I have an Intro and contents page which are unnumbered before starting a multi-section report (at page 1) followed by some annexes. I want to show the total number of pages in the report Sections only in the footer page count. I can't use Numpages or SectionPages since Numpages gives me the total number of pages in the document and SectionPages only gives me the number of pages in each section even when using continuous sections. How do I tell Word to only count the total number of pages across designated contiguous sections?
Hi, Des. I'm sorry, I don't have the answer to that. However, you might try asking Allen Wyatt of WordTips here: wordribbon.tips.net/contact.html He's a much higher-level expert than I am.
I don't think so, but I haven't tested it. You might test it yourself - do it once, then add a couple words to a header or footer, and update the field, see if it changes.
Sorry, I haven't studied that. But I have discovered that there are probably 3 or 4 active versions of Word out at any given time, and each version has different capabilities and restrictions, so that might be the issue? Good luck.
David's Tutorials Your video is really helpful. Excuse me sir. Could you tell me programs that you used to record and edit the video? It's wonderful. Wasn't it edited in one program? I would appreciate if you tell me.
Hi, Sokleaph - I think I did this one entirely in Camtasia studio. I've applied for an affiliate link but it hasn't come through yet. So ... if you buy it, it's totally to their benefit - Grin!
Appreciate the simplicity and clarity, I could follow along and learnt what I was searching for.
I'm so glad to hear that, Karl. Comments like yours encourage me to keep making videos. Take care.

Insert 02:58, 04:15
Watch result 04:45
Watch code 04:51, 05:29
Update 06:42, 07:02
Format 06:13
Delete 05:49
This might be helpful if you had provided more information about what you're talking (commenting) about.

Click on the first word you want to count, scroll to the last word, hold SHIFT, then click again. Word will count all the selected words.
Thank you. Is there an option to just count the words on certain pages?

can you please do a tutorial on Fill-in fields in word? Thank you!
