5/1/91: Nolan Ryan's 7th No-Hitter

  • Toronto Blue Jays 0 at Texas Rangers 3, F -- When baseball's King of Ks, Nolan Ryan, struck out Roberto Alomar for his 16th strikeout of the game, it marked the completion of Ryan's record seventh no-hit gem -- three more than the man with the second most no-nos in history, Sandy Koufax. The 44 year-old Ryan proved yet again that there was still plenty of life left in the "ole right arm."

      It really was. I was a 15 year old kid, living in Garland Texas in 1990.... When my dad surprised my younger brother and I with opening day 1990 tickets in Arlington Texas with my idol Nolan Ryan on the mound... it was a dream come true.. he didn't pitch a no-hitter that day, but he pitched really really well. And I will remember the grunt he made with every fastball he threw for the rest of my life.

    I had just turned 11 in March. My dad came home early from work and surprised me with the fact that we were going to the game, something we did often since we lived in Arlington, about 20 minutes from Arlington Stadium. We sat in the left field bleachers, lower deck. I was young, so I don't remember everything about the game, but I remember the last strikeout, and getting drenched with beer as fans threw their beers into the air after that third strike. Great memories...

      Thats awesome! I live in Arlington as well, grew up here. The company my dad worked for at the time, Berryman Products had company seats, so my dad routinely got tickets. Only went to 1 game at Arlington Stadium, but went to a bunch at The now Old Ballpark. July 28th 1994, was a game that my dad just happen to take my friend and I to. Around the 5th inning my dad said "I dont think Kenny has had anyone reach 1st yet". Well, we know the history that Kenny Rogers made that night. i have never been in a louder place. While I wasnt quite 11, I would turn 11 later that year ;-)

    I'm a musician,....so from time to time I get to play at functions where I get to meet celebrities.
    One of my favorite stories was at a sports function in Dallas Texas about 14-15 years ago.
    A retired umpire was there and we got to talking. I asked him who was the fastest pitcher he ever saw, to which he replied, Nolan Ryan. He then proceeded to tell me this story:
    The ump said, "Nolan was up in the count 1-2"......."he started his wind up",....
    then he said, "Nolan delivered the ball but then , I lost it",...
    I replied, "what do you mean?"......
    The ump said, "I lost sight of the ball and all I heard was the pop as it hit the glove",......
    The ump said, "I yelled STRIKE!...YOU'RE OUT!"......
    The ump said, "The batter turned to me and said, "Did you REALLY see it?",.....
    The ump responded, "Nope,....but it SOUNDED like a strike"
    true story...and quite possibly one of the great stories no one will ever here.......

We raced afterwards to the T.G.I. Fridays down the street in Lincoln Square, thats where Nolan went after most starts. He arrived to thunderous applause, shook every hand offered, including my own. The 1991 game in Seattle, he struck Ken Griffey Jr out twice and made him pop out easily, and he had 8 strikeouts, and a 3 hitter, which were not great hits, and it was like a no-hitter atmosphere, for me, he was really on!!!!!!!!!! I saw him strike out Ken Griffey Sr and Junior in the same 1990 game, it was guaranteed no-hitter night, and he had 9 k's, and he warmed up by throwing a football!!!!! P.S.-I had FORGOTTEN that I saw him a SECOND time in 1990, facing Ken Griffey Jr AND Sr, and one of the times that Ken Sr was at-bat, there must have been like 10 foul balls, maybe 2 or 3 less...4 at the MOST, but it was a battle, and A LOT of souveniers for the fans???!!!!!

      @kszirovecz 7 років тому +18

      Life in the 413 - I remember that and it definitely showed a contrast in class. Henderson had an arrogant post game interview where he talked about how great he was and that the stolen base recorded made him the G.O.A.T. Ryan was humble and complemented his teammates who helped preserve the no-hitter and his catcher for calling a great game. Ryan was (is) a class act.

    • @ADEAL918
      @ADEAL918 4 роки тому +1

      ksir Henderson was not exactly what you'd call humble, of course, while Ryan was. But Henderson did get a bit of a bad rap for that post-game line about "the greatest of all time." First, he said later that this line was meant to be a tip of the cap to Muhammad Ali, who was a hero of his and who had used the statement himself. And the other interesting point was that he wrote his statements in consultation with Lou Brock (whose record he was breaking) and with his complete blessing.

Koufax had 4 no hitters in just 6 years and much lower ERA's than Nolan.The only issue that put a little tiny black eye on Ryan's career were those thousands of walks he allowed and not an impressive win/loss percentage and era a bit high for his inhuman ability. Ryan last had 10 SO per 9 innings in 1978 at age 31 in AL. Then at 40 in NL Ryan had his career high: 11.5! 270 SO in 211 innings. Second best in Ryan's career: 11.3 at age 42 with 301 SO ... in the AL with a DH! I think the only injury he ever had was in his last major league start in 1993 when he tore something which says a lot because the percentages of pitchers who need Tommy John surgery has almost become a standard practice now. If someone wants to know how to succeed at the MLB level, the best pitchers to model themselves after are Greg Maddux for his knowledge to get the batter out, and Nolan Ryan who knew how to use his strength to get the job done.

I was born a Cubs fan on the southside of Chicago and my newlywed wife couldn't understand my excitement about going to that ball game. I had seats in the right-field bleachers and walked around that park and got up behind home plate as close as I could get before they kicked me out. I never heard a catcher's glove pop that loudly. As a Blue Jay fan at the time I had never seen a pitcher dominate them the way Ryan did. This was and still is the greatest pitching performance I have ever seen. What an incredible athlete

      I have 5 on my list in modern times. Koufax has the lowest ERA, the most wins and the most strikeouts in combination. Pedro Martinez was up there for a 5 yr period. Johnson and Ryan. greg Maddux was utterly unhittable for a 5 yr stretch with Era's below 1.70! and only 25 walks the entire season ,not to mention 10 gold gloves as a pitcher. Maddux was the most underrated pitcher in baseball history in that 5 yr 90's stretch because of his slider and movement that sank and went IN on right handed batters, away on left handed batters. You usually hit a soft ground ball for an out. His walk to innings pitched ratio was probably the lowest in history..!!

    I almost saw a Nolan Ryan no hitter in Arlington vs. the Tigers. I was in the bleachers and Nolan had a no hitter with 2 outs in the 9th when Dave Bergman hit one off the wall to end the no hitter. I was also there for what was technically Nolan's last game, although he was injured and wasn't pitching. It was the last game of 1993 Rangers vs Royals. It was Nolan's final game, it was George Brett's final game, and it was the last game in Arlington Stadium before they moved to the new park. The Ranger crowd gave George Brett a standing ovation.

    He's 44 years old here. All those Mets pitchers from the late 60s and early 70s using a drop and drive motion had long successful careers with almost no injury. Today they pitch with a stiff front leg and use their over muscled arms to pitch. Even though they're bigger and stronger and have access to advanced performance technology, even though they're on restricted pitch counts, they still get injured frequently and sometimes need TJ surgery too. Why won't they look at this way of pitching again? I'm watching for the first smart person to catch on.

    Nolan is hands down the greatest pitcher of all time! I used to go watch him pitch for the Rangers all the time and even as a kid I knew I was watching greatness. I have watched this game a bunch of times over the years because I had a vhs tape that showed Nolan pitching and only the innings the Rangers scored in. This was the first time I watched this game in several years and I’m still blown away at how dominant he was that night. I have watched Kenny Rogers perfect game & even watched a couple of no hitters & perfect games live on tv over the years and while every single one of them is an amazing feat this one sticks out because of who he is and the fact that the Blue Jays were a great team that went on to win more than one World Series. I had forgotten just how overpowering he was with all those strikeouts. One thing always rang true with Nolan & that was if his curveball was on point it was going to be a long night for hitters.

    I was very fortunate to have a dad who was a sports writer for the Fort Worth Star Telegram for 40 years. During a good portion of that time he was a Rangers beat writer. I got to go to more Ranger games than I could ever count. He also got along real well with Nolan Ryan. Well enough that Nolan Ryan invited my dad down to his hunting property just out of San Antonio one year. And I was extremely fortunate enough to be invited as well. I was a senior in high school at the time. So I got to go hunting with Nolan and hang out with him and his family at their hunting cabin which you can imagine was much much nicer than most hunting cabins. I shot a nice buck which I had mounted along with a picture of Nolan and I that was put in the newspaper. It's one of those times that you'll never forget. My favorite part of that trip was not the hunting or the buck or my picture in the paper with Nolan, but it was a time one evening when I got in from hunting before the others, Nolan having not gone hunting with the rest of us that evening, was there at the cabin so it was just me and him, and we just sat there talking about things like school and sports. I kept having to remind myself that I was chatting with a living legend. It was a very surreal experience.

    The most dominant pitcher in MLB history. What's just as crazy as the 7 no hitters is the fact he had 12 one hitters and 18 two hitters, both tied for most all time. Lowest hits per 9 innings in history.

    There was a clip of him getting another player in the headlock and punching him in the face when the player charged the mound after him after he got hit by the ball.

      +BTL2007 That's against Robin Ventura in 1993. Funny thing is Tom Henke was on that Texas team.
