  • A step-by-step guide to build a salad spinner from a washing machine. I show you all of the steps needed to do this conversion. These are very common in the wash/pack station of market gardens.

    For anyone building this washer - The addition of a simple rotary dimmer allows you to control the speed of the spin!

    Looks good. The pump could be kept and utilized to push the water wherever you would like it to drain as well, just splice it in with the drive motor

    • @JoshSattinFarming
      @JoshSattinFarming  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks. I actually did think about this. That might work, but the way washing machines operate they spin for a while and then pump for a little bit at the end when there is water in the basin. I am not sure the pump would be happy running dry most of the time. A lot of pumps will burn out if run dry.

    Hey Josh, please please use that cable armor / harness to control those wires. Not only you are able to 'cable manage' it better, if you use it in combo with high IP rating junction cable box, you'll be much safer with possible splash water or direct water. Those boxes most likely cost the same as the waterproof wire connectors. A box + managed wires will leave very little, if any, room for water to get into or onto exposed wires. Stay safe! Happy farming. Regards from Europe.

      Thanks for the concern. I agree that would be a more proper way to do it, but I really do think it will be fine.

      @@JoshSattinFarming Just replied here as you have most of the things there. The armor is already there only the cable box has to be bought. I don't wish it to any one to get shocked while working with water.

    Just wondering why the switch/timer is on the neutral instead of the hot? Also, what do you do with a VFD 3-phase motor like so many of the newer washers? (They have multiple speeds, and reverse)

    Serendipitously, I think this might be just the type of washer people are likely to sell second hand. I did a bunch of research for my last washer (after enduring one that didn't clean the clothes for my situation) and that type with little/no agitator was a type that many didn't like. I would add one of the recent versions of a Speed Queen to your possibilities list (ie, the one with the very short agitator). Folks might be able to get one that is very clean and new-ish. I love a good reuse.

    • @JoshSattinFarming
      @JoshSattinFarming  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, I bought this one used for $200. UVM also recommends certain Speed Queens too:

    Hello Josh, I was able to build a spinnet recently. I also added bumbers to the top rim of the drum like you it was a nice snug fit. But, I noticed at high RPMs the basket would pop up a little which caused it to get out of balance and no function... Did you have this issue?

    but how do you wire the timer the tork wiring is confusing, no where to connect the neutral wire with only 3 connection points; line 1, load 1, & load 2, how do you take the old power cable and connect it to the timer and then the timer to the washing machine?

    Lol as an appliance tech you made me cringe as you cut in to that VMW washer. But it is neat to see that they can be used differently then what I normally see. By the way most Maytag, Amana and Whirlpool that are belt driven should work for this project.

    Half inch pex tubing works great to secure the basket. Had some extra laying around. Cut a length to encircle the inner drum. Sat it right on the ridge like in your video. Some tek screws to keep it in place. The basket now sits flush and secure!

      Honestly, it would probably be nice because you could do a soak then transfer it for a spin. And unless you get a really good deal on a washing machine, probably cheaper too. And the bonus of less effort to make it work the way you want it to.
