EFFECTIVELY Find Fall Walleyes Using Side Imaging and MEGA 360

  • Today we are back with another fall walleye fishing video and after a busy week in northern Minnesota I figured we should make a video showcasing the process I use to find fish and then target them on many of the large shallow flats in which walleyes use this time of year. This video features a details walk through of side imaging on the Humminbird and how I break down what I see. Fall walleyes bites are in full swing and the shallow water jig bite is happening everywhere. Thanks for watching!

    In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

    Tom, you nailed this video. Fish aside, you not only listened to your viewers but altered your content to meet their needs. You could have stubbornly ignored Christopher but you chose to listen and adapt your teachings. Everyone including myself is even happier with your content and I see this as a pivot point for your channel. Way to go!

    We love you Tom Boley! Christopher doesn’t watch enough of your videos ! My husband watches you every day all day, if he could. I think Shelby is awesome too! He actually drives me crazy watching your videos , he takes over our living room 85 inch TV. I screwed up and taught him how to watch UA-cam on the TV. You make his day! You are full of knowledge and entertaining.

    Christopher got his very own Tom Boley tutorial. I appreciate you Tom, and the information you provide, I hope Christopher does too. If I had a $1 for every time Christopher was addressed, I’d have enough cash to fuel my boat up. I’m literally heading out right now, so thank you Christopher for inspiring Tom to put this out this morning.
    PS- Christopher, I totally thought the same thing about those videos. Only I still enjoyed them.

    There’s a Christopher in every class, Tom. That’s why “it’s in the syllabus” is a meme. That said, the scrolling video - this is fish, that is rock… - is super helpful. Keep doing what you’re doing. I love the videos and have yet to see one where I couldn’t put fish in the boat on a local lake when trying (clumsily) to duplicate what you are demonstrating. I’d say that makes you a fantastic teacher.

    So I saw this video this morning. Left Cadott drove 90 min north to Hayward and went fishing. End of the day total. 22 walleyes all over 16”. With a beauty of a thick 25”. All on the weed edges and mid lake humps in about 13’ all relating to weeds. Then caught about 5 tank smallyes on cribs from another Tom Boley video from last year.
    Tom Boley is the man and I am forever great full for his knowledge and videos 💪💪💪👊👊👊👍👍

    Sometimes work is boring Tom. I know you get sick of putting these kind of videos out Tom but humans are simple creatures just like fish we like patterns. You are the tech guy that's why most people watch. Yes we could watch old videos but neither one of us would benefit from that. You're a world class fisherman we know you could catch fish in the Serengeti. Sometimes we need the rinse and repeat. Great video Thanks

    THANKS TOM AND CHRISTOPHER. GREAT VIDEO. I FISH A VERY CLEAR LAKE IN NORTHERN WISCONSIN AND THEREFORE A LOT OF WEED GROWTH. BY MID SUMMER THERE'S A FOOT
    OF WEEDS OUT TO 18 FEET AND FURTHER. VERY LITTLE HARD CLEAN BOTTOM SO IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE FISH ON THE BOTTOM. SIDE IMAGING HAS BEEN GREAT FOR SHOWING ME STRUCTURE, ESPECIALLY WEED EDGES. THEN I GO IN WITH DOWN IMAGING AND 2D SONAR TO PICK OUT FISH. I CAN PICK OUT WALLEYE WITH SI IN THE EARLY SEASON BEFORE THE WEEDS GET GOING. I THINK THERE'S LIMITS TO ALL THESE TOOLS DEPENDING ON THE LAKE YOU FISH.

    It pleased me to no end when I tuned into your latest video Tom. For me, I’ve listened to the tactics and watched the techniques being used but for the life of me, I had very little success catching fish using them. My big take away is now hard it is to see fish using side imaging. I’ve only been using it for two seasons. Fish images are much smaller than I expected. Tom, I also heard you say you have your two Humminbirds linked together. I have a 7 for side and a 9 for down, sonar, and mapping. I need to see if I can get the 7 to link up to the 9 to let me put a mark from the fish on the 7 to the map on the 9. I hope I heard that correctly. I have way more technology in my boat that I have learned how to use. 😎 Thanks for being such a patient teacher!

    • @crosspein55
      @crosspein55 3 роки тому

      I have a similar setup (7si/9di) and I’ve only had the 7si this one season. I’m still struggling to get there kind of images Tom gets on my 7. But I have gotten a bit more confidence.
      As to networking, both units need to be “N” type. My 9 is G2N and my 7 is G3N. Then you need the cables and dongles. (I think humminbird’s prices on the cabling was ridiculous though)
      Good luck!

  • @crosspein55
    @crosspein55 3 роки тому +1

    I really enjoyed the video, even if it did get a little hard on Christopher after a while. As other comments pointed out, much of this can be gleaned cumulatively from your other videos, so I’ll thank Christopher for stimulating it and you for delivering so much.
    What I do struggle with are the SI settings. I run a 7si networked to a 9di and struggle to get the sharpness on my 7 that you enjoy on the larger unit. (My fishing budget is limited…). I am finding fish on my SI, but there are probably many more that I am not seeing
    I recall a video where you touched on settings, and would love to see a recap/summary all in one like this video.

    Great job again Tom! I honestly got bored watching you catch walleye all the time but I love the electronics tips and tutorials. I do have a difficult time telling a fish shadow from woody debris. Probably because on my home lakes the walleye are too small to show up. But I'm a master at seeing the crappie. :) I do need to spend more time driving around looking for those weeds and practicing the process when I'm up at Hayward.

    This video probably felt a little remedial to you, but honestly this was very helpful to be able to watch “the process” unfold in real time. I’ve been holding off on upgrading to side imaging for a long time, but this video just proves how efficient it makes you on the water. You would literally have to drive through weeds to have a shot at marking those with 2D, and no doubt walleye would have scattered.

What ever they call for in wind out there you can just triple that. 4 hours later and I am still bobbing up and down. Lol I caught one 21" trolling. They wouldn't touch a crawler harness. When I found a school I got one shot at casting to them and I would be blown off and unable to find the school again. I resounded to just trolling. In my Bass Boat took a few waves on my front casting deck and that was enough for me.

    Wow! Awesome video. I think we all have wanted you to do something like this showing how you break down a spot. I was really hoping you would show your gps and how you use it to go back to a waypoint and where you would spotlock. I don’t have 360 so I generally just try to spotlock 30 feet or so upwind of my waypoints but if I struggle to get bit I am constantly 2nd guessing if I’m in the right spot or did the fish move or are they just not interested in my presentation. Saving up for a 360 but it’s a big expense and I’m sure a lot of people will never have it. Thanks Christopher! And Tom, you legit make the best walleye fishing videos on UA-cam. Period!

    Thank you, thank you,thank you. Undoubtedly the BEST video I’ve seen covering this topic. I can’t wait to put this into practice. Almost feel sorry for the walleye

    Best video yet! Can you go into. Some of your settings as far as sensitivity and how you adjust them?

    This and the Jigging Rap video might be the most comprehensive and complete breakdowns of a fishing topic I have ever seen. I have supported you by buying your merch, but I'd pay directly for this content via Patreon. You da MVP, Tom!

    Thank you for the shallow water weed edge knowledge. I'm on Lake Melissa just south of Detroit Lakes, and this lake is surrounded by shoreline weeds that come out 500+ yards and then drops to muddy bottom flats. Very few mud to sand transitions. There are zero mid-lake humps. Most of the lake is large open flats on one side and narrower flats on the other. The flats average depth is 26'-28'. The deepest holes drop to 38'-42'. Many weed edges go from 9' quickly into 30+ feet on a sharp break. Most of the walleyes are scattered on these flats maybe in pairs or singles. This lake is 1850 acres. I seem to drive around 7 miles before I can locate the walleyes worth fishing. All I have is down imaging which takes hours driving back and fourth. I'll be looking for weed pockets today in that 10'-15' range as well as the few weed/sand transitions. Thanks for another informational video for the average Joe-Blow like most of us. :)
