    I love it.. Thanks for the video.
    I engineered and produced analog in the 1980s for 10 years and then life took a different path. My dream is setting up another studio and SSL is on the top of my list along with both MCI machines and digital. I completely agree that hands on is part of the experience. The console is one of the musical instruments that gets played in the chain of recording and mixing. Everyone should go hands on to experience it even if they plan to stay in the box.

    Great video and I think your points about the inserts makes sense. I've worked in studios with large consoles and there's nothing like it. As you said, in the box gets the job done, but the tactile experience is so much different. It's more like playing an instrument and feels much more creative.

    Great video, I love all of the detailed info about the Origin and why you mix with analog gear. I can’t afford an Origin …..yet, but I have been working hybrid for many years (Burl B32 + Hardware) and I feel the same way. Actually using gear and mixing through hardware is just so much more fun than just using a mouse and computer!!! It makes me enjoy the process so much more and it allows you to build a custom setup and do something different than the all ITB mixer down the street does. I am also a little biased but I also think it sounds better than mixing ITB. I also print through the Burl B2 which gives my mixes a certain sound they wouldn’t have otherwise. I love the channel, great concept and I hope it does well for you!!

    I just bought an origin and threw it right into the fire. Bed track session. Console arrived and 2 hours later we were recording beds! It was def a very simple type session just mic ins and direct outs and returns to protools but as you say, the console is very straight forward yet with lots of possibilities. Your videos have been very helpful and I appreciate all the work you are doing for the rest of us Thanks!!! I did test drive the console twice before purchasing and it does have nice tone. I'm also baffled by the no insert button on the groups however i usually find that ssl does things very purposefully and perhaps in getting input from top ssl mixers on what they should leave out to meet the price point...maybe bus inserts wasn't a top priority. Personally i feel the most important thing the console has is 32 awesome eqs! I mean isn't the 242 what we all want first?...large and small faders BOTH with inserts next...A killer cue system and communication section...a killer master section...tons of routing and the great bus compressor...maybe they figured the busses would be best served for stems prints or surround possibilities...I'm not sure but I would have liked a button...but theres' no way i'd sacrifice 8 eqs for that

    I'm glad you pulled the trigger on getting a console. Not meaning to be stuck in the past with the whole must have large format consoles. racks of outboard gear, tons of cables, patchbays, floating rooms within rooms, isolation booths, big tall live rooms with classic vintage mics and the wholly grail of preamps and so forth, but its undeniable that with the millions of records that were recorded, mixed, and mastered that way for thousands of artist by top engineers we idolized such as Chris lord-alge, Bruce Swedien, Bob Clearmountain, Andrew Scheps, Silvia Massey and hundreds of others. I mean, yes its great with access to really great plugins and a good DAW and audio interface, but less face it. the Bar is really high when it comes to the traditional console, outboard gear, and so forth, the sound is just hard to beat going strictly in the box. The console is just one of the center sounds that make great records

    Thank you for these in depth videos of the Origin, you really are the only one creating such detailed content about this console. I was looking through the installation manual, and - though it might be wonky, and possibly a ventilation/heat issue - it says: "the 11th and 12th U of rack space are angled such that a deep unit could extend through the cable entry space in the rear of the console". so perhaps there is a way for the Fusion to fit in the center section afterall? Again, thank you for the content and please keep it coming!

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  2 роки тому

      Nope, there are some electronic components in that area and everything is so jammed tight in there that the Fusion really does not fit easily, especially with the cable connecting to the back

Having seen you working on the Presonus StudioLive, having the in the Box sound, but the still moving faders, I would love to understand the differences in workflow from one to the other. Of course they will sound very different, but as far as being able to reach out and touch a knob, what are the pros and cons of working with a digital console vs an analog console.

    Hybrid is the way to go for sure. What they don't tell you about Andrew Schepps is that he is working on tracks that have already gone through top grade equipment from world class studios prior to receiving them.
    I enjoy actually touching gear especially as a musician where part of the art and experience is about the feel. A mouse and keyboard is so detached from the music. I wish I could get a console but I don't have 60k to drop lololol.. I'm happy for you though.

    Great information Dave! I would love to have an SSL Origin but for now my Yamaha RM-800 inline console will have to do. I still have 24 channels with EQ on the big fader and 24 channels without EQ on the small fader (actually a knob). A friend of mine came over to the studio a few years back and asked me why I prefer to mix OTB with outboard gear instead of ITB with plugins. I loaded a mix on the console and told him to play with faders and panning pots. As soon as he started panning stuff ho turns over and tells me: "Now I get it".

      I just scored an RM800 on a trade and I am beyond impressed! 100mm faders, 3 band EQ with sweepable mids, 4 aux sends, and great routing possibilities. It’s so quiet it’s hard to believe it’s analog. A major upgrade from my Mackie and it absolutely destroys my friends Soundcraft Ghost.
      It’s heavy as as tank, has individual channel strips, and great track separation…I could go on all day! My only gripe is I’d like more inserts, but that’s nothing a patchbay won’t solve. I can’t believe how slept on these consoles are.

    As owner of Origin 00078 I agree with all you said. The only other gripe I have is that the SF from LF function is pretty useless - the SF insert isn't active, it's an exact copy of what is on the LF post insert and can only be routed using the busing system, which means you can't route the LF to a bus. Can't think of anything where it would come in useful. I also have a Fusion and Apollo X16's, so I was gong to use the Origin Master Outputs to feed the Fusion and then use the separate UAD Console Monitor Outputs from the Apollo units to go back into the desk 2 track "externals" to hear what I'm doing. This should get round the Stereo Width closing in when using the Fusion on the Origin Master Insert and Bus Comp in tandem. I don't have either the 2 track externals or the monitor out of the Apollo's wired to my patchbay at the moment but will be doing shortly to get round the same problem you're experiencing. Keep on twisting those knobs! 🙂Cheers Andy

    Great points you made. Fantastic console with great quality, but still the bus features you said you would like.
    Perhaps a work around on the mains is to bypass the Fusion altogether to get the master bus compressor.
    Then pass the printed stereo track through a channel pair “zeroed out” to insert the Fusion only.
    I know it’s extra and maybe someone already suggested it (or you tried it already). But with the low noise SSL specializes in, you shouldn’t end up with unwanted artifacts I guess lol

    Very interesting video and review of your console. I would be very interested in hearing a mix that you've done previously entirely "in the box" compared with you re-mixing it using the same source material (tracks) and principles but through the console. It would be great to hear the sonic differences. I'm not interested in hearing an analog vs digital comparison because that's an entirely different situation. As Andrew Scheps says, what is important is what comes out of the speakers. At the end of the day, which is going to sound better to the client/artist or to the general public (not just those engineers/producers who have their own preconceived ideas of which should sound better). In other words, which is better for the music??? 😎

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  2 роки тому +2

      I may do a test like that at one point but honestly, there would be so much hateful nonsense comments I would have to sift through it's not worth it for me to do. I am not going to convince anyone with a video series like that so why bother. There are sonic differences with out a doubt but unless you sit it the room you wont appreciate the full scale of it.
      The Andrew Scheps remark is fine but people that constantly quote him because now he only mixes in the box, they completely miss the point of why I bought a console, even through I said it twice in this video and have made the same point in several other videos. People hear what they want to hear and they dont listen. They can't have a console for whatever reason so it makes them feel better to say "Well, Andrew Scheps says this and Andrew Schps says that". Again for every guy like Andrew Scheps mixing totally in the box, there are 20 other engineers at his level still mixing on consoles. However, people don't want to hear that and that's totally fine.
      I appreciate you watching

Also I was just reading SSL was bought out by Audiotonix a year ago and now they also own Slate Digital which is interesting. It is soooo much quicker to get results. You get things done in a second. I agree with you on mixing on the console and outboard is great, but the problem is when the client wants a few tweaks 2 months later, good luck recalling it. Im doing this a long time and I can tell you thats a nightmare. Thats why I pretty much mix in the box and use my audient asp 8024 for input when recording. Scheps does the same thing. I guess thats where the AWS comes in handy as it will recall all the settings.

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  2 роки тому +3

      I dont have that issue with recall. I dont work with clients that need to come back 2 months later for tweak. As a matter of fact, when I was mixing all ITB for nearly 10 years, with all the clients I worked with, I never once had someone come back to me after they signed off the project looking for tweaks.....not a single time. I don't have to deal with that type of client. Now, if I was working in a situation where that was common place and my clients were paying me with that expectation that they can come back after they signed off the mix and I delivered the final files....then Absolutely.....I would have an AWS or a Delta where recall is super simple and quick.

      Consoles are great for recording and tracking a band. This console seems really nice. If your not tracking a band with drums and just an artist, I would get 2 UF8 's, UF1 and UC1.
      With that being said, the SSL XL Desk ia another good SSL console at even a lower price which is great for getting the SSL sound for a serious project studio.

    However stupid this may sound, I have purchased an SSL BiG SiX, and it has changed the way I mix. The experience of faders and knobs is hugely superior to mixing in the box. I cannot start to think how much of a leap going from BiG SiX to Origin would be, but if the BiG SiX is already a great step up from being "in the box", the Origin must be a life changer.
    I now mix with a smile, get my results faster, the process feels better, and my confidence is boosted. I think my sound is better, but even if it weren't, going analog is totally worth it for the pleasure of spending hours on a console.

    Just to add my 2 cents...
    Agree with Dave about virtually everything both positive and negative...the one major issue I have with it is the way they have the MASTER STEREO outs combined with the MASTER INSERT on the same DB25 connection...I would much prefer it to have a separate output for the MASTER STEREO OUT, either on a dedicated DB25 or a pair of XLR jacks...that would eliminate the need to jumper the stereo outs on a patch bay to get a print track back into the DAW via the interface...
    He is absolutely correct that being in the room with that thing is an amazing and sometime mind-blowing experience...I mix in the box with a hybrid mix buss and will never claim that the SSL makes better mixes, but the different environment is a total change in workflow and interaction with the tracks...one simply does not compare in any way to the other, they are completely different processes...
    I would like to express again how much I appreciate being included in this experience...I have made a wonderful new friend with whom I can share the pure joy of learning and growing as an engineer and I will never be able to properly and adequately express my appreciation to him for it...
    We have a pretty solid game plan for the rest of 2022, and you should all look for at least one or two live stream mixes from me as we delve deeper into what the board and other gear have to offer...

    Hey great video, happy you love it! I was also watching your stem video, and had a question, why are you running 3 Apollo 16’s with the console? Are you using the unison preamps on that many channels?
    Asking because I didn’t know about this before, but I just went ADAT for expanding my Apollo. It’s not UA preamps, but it shows up with 8 extra inputs in the Console app and I can put UA plugins on every input, just no unison for them. It’s amazing and I believe I’m still using the apollo converters so if you get some decent ADAT inputs that could be a lot of money saved even if you buy UA Satellites for the DSP!

    I have SSL Alpha Channel pre-amp and what I learned is that SSL pre-amps work extremely well on dark mics, but not so well on bright mics.
    I have U47 type of clone, handmade by a (now) retired engineer
    You should always pair your gear with what matches your sound, SSL is clean, but almost never perfect for bright mics, my opinion. When you put a dark mic behind SSL, you will see amazing results.
    SSL Alpha Channel: "The EQ is, in essence, a mono version of the three-band EQ used in the stereo channels on the G-series console, while the preamp is a slightly modified version of the VHD mic pre from the E-series Signature Channel."
    SSL Origin uses: PureDrive Preamps, E-Series EQ
    Probably similar in some ways to my unit.
    Years later I see most of the appeal for Neve style consoles, as most people rock mics that have hyped high frequency response. Unlike U47 clones that have a roll off.
    I tend to stay away from overly bright mics and gear. This is why Focusrite Scarlett was not a good replacement to my Saffire Pro 40.
    Some people love the dark/tape like sound, I am one of those guys. Some like more clinical sound.
    I think Audient interfaces such as ID44 MKII and ID14 MKII fit perfectly between, for anything brighter I would go for SSL, but I hated SSL 2+ interface, it was so painfully bright, even with my U47 clone.

    It's funny (not really) that the Origin has the same bus compressor setup as the SSL Six. You have an insert before the compressor, but if you want to add processing, it either has to go before the compressor on the insert, or you need to add it to the main out of the desk (I don't want everything I process through the Six going through additional processing). I sort of get it with the Six due to the cost, but at $50k, you'd think they would've given a little more flexibility.

    I just purchased a Origin. Coming in 2 days. I had a question about the buss comp. You said it cannot be moved from the insert points. Which I did see the other day in the manual. I also have a fusion and like to put that after the comp. Correct me if I am wrong. So the signal flow goes insert-buss comp - split to monitors then master fader out. What if you ran. Mix to buss comp like normal (not using the insert) than patched in the the main output (after the master fader) and inserted the fusion. Then ran a sub-normalled patch point from the main out (after the fusion) to whatever it is running to normally a daw input or tape machine from the console. Then a mult of the sub-normalled main output to the monitor in section? Again I am getting the console in a few days so I cannot try this yet and then I have like 3 weeks of getting the patch bays ready etc before I can use it. So, going to be a few week until I can try this? But have you though about this and if so does it work?

      @@MixingMusicAnalog I stopped to investigate after you mentioned the cost. Now I went back and watched the rest. I used to be all in the box. I now went hybrid and I have an SSL Fusion and them bought and SSL violet EQ and them Elysia hardware units and now I have Gear acquisition syndrome which I think happened to you as well. I want one of those now too. I assume that you still need to buy convertors to support the 32 channels. I currently have an Apollo 8xp and Apollo 8 and a Pure 2. I see the Presonus 48 would work. What are you using ?

      I did look at them briefly, but at the time I think they did not have enough faders. I love that the Origin has 64 total fader. I use 40-44 all the time
