Critiquing My Paintings from South Africa - with Anna Rose Bain

- Watch as I critique my own work from my recent trip to the Western Cape area of South Africa. During the 10-day period, I was teaching a painting workshop and my group and I were touring the winelands and several game reserves, and I came back with nine oil paintings altogether! I find that critiquing my own work can be helpful not just to clarify my thoughts about a painting or what I feel it needs, but it can be helpful to my students as well. Hope you enjoy!

You are a great teacher. Describing explaining and showing. Even sharing thoughts as you are making choices etc….. thank you
Thank you!
What an exciting trip! Love your paintings!
I’d love to say I’d join you and I sure wish I could. I’m so glad you had a wonderful time and it was great seeing your sketches-your portraits are wonderful, even unfinished!! I can clearly see your heart for who you are painting. Thanks for sharing w us!
My favorite is the elephants one.
I love your self critiques! They're super helpful, and a good reminder for us that even established artists like you are not always satisfied with their plein air work.
Thanks for sharing your adventures. This was very informative.
We were struck by the sheer amount of work you accomplished, and we're so impressed with the quality! Looks like you just devoured every minute of this trip! We also wanted to say that the objectivity and honesty you show in critiquing your own work is something every artist should strive for. It's not easy to balance positivity and honesty when we judge our own progress, but learning that ability is such an advantage!
Wow, thank you so much! Carpe diem! :-)
What a wonderful adventure in such a special place. Beautiful paintings. Excellent portraits.
i would very much like to critique these paintings with you over a bottle of wine and a fine meal cooked by myself, overlooking my ranch. you have an otherworldly radiance that punctures my soul xx

Very beautiful my dear friend and artist
Hope this channel grows...
👍 Awesome
Good videos...would like to see more videos...
Beautiful plein air work in such a heavenly place! I just want to offer that Blessing was not wearing "dreads" they were simply "braids" The term dreads is short for "dreadful" so in 2023 we use the term "locs" for that particular hairstyle 💕
Thank you so much for that clarification! I had never heard that before.
@AnnaRoseBain You're most welcome, it's all in love. 💕
Anna please come to Pretoria next time
Hi Anna, I love your work! 😊💕. I found you through your sister’s video of the Oregon painting trip you both did together. Have you ever used water soluble oils? If so, what do you think of them?
Thank you so much! I have dabbled with water soluble oils but never could quite get used to them. The consistency is totally different. But, I know some artists who do amazing work with them!
@@AnnaRoseBain Thanks! I am thinking of getting the warm and cool primaries in the water mixable and giving them a try. I would prefer not to use products with toxins or strong fumes so I am hoping that I can make them work. We’ll see how it goes! 🙂
