I really liked how you explained in detail how he got rid of the late coil. You pointed out perfectly how the racquet tip, point direction as one beings up the racquet, is key. Carlos is now kind of pointing in toward the back fence, like other past great servers like Sampras and Goran.
How are you able to spot these kinds of things Nick? I have been trying to find the difference in Carlos serve, I ago learned that he added weight to his racquet throat. I’m so inspired by his game that I’m emulating his game. I’m am aspiring to take my game to the highest level.
Good stuff Nick! Maybe I missed it but what specific improvements in Alcaraz’s serve should we expect to see now that he is not coiling late? Less double faults, more power, more precision?
Amazing video as always! I have a question if you have the time, how is the Solinco Blackout EXD compared to a Pure Drive 2021? I want to change racquet nd I am between these 2, I really like the Blackout with the paintjob. Thanks!
@IntuitiveTennis thank you! Will go with the pure drive since I fell it is already pretty muted and is always a safe pick, especially at the intermediate level!
He looks to have a slight pause from when he is fully loaded to the start of his forward swing. Is that intentional? Any advantage or disadvantage to that?
I think he can still improve the mechanics of his server. For instance, he wastes a bit of time when his arm stops after he tosses the ball up instead of continuing to move his arm up and take advantage of the momentum. There's clear a hitch in his mechanic.
@@IntuitiveTennis Karlovic and other great servers may benefit from "live arm" but it doesn't mean there's no interuption in the momentum in my humble opinion. Here's an analogy to illustrate my point. If you try to hammer a nail into a piece of wood with a sudden pause in the motion towards the nail with a hammer in your hand is less effective compared to a non interruptive motion of your arm. Would you get the nail into the wood? Absolutely! The same applies to the serve. Just a matter of optimizing the power especially if you take into account the weight of the racket and the ball and the energy spent to hit the serve.
@@fingersm he's like an inch shorter than Nadal and Federer. In your opinion, would those two not have made it either if they played in the current generation?
We are interested in whether this new Carlos serving technique is identical or the same as the Sampras, Federer or Nadal serving techniques from the 2010 US Open.
@@elchanclascocina Is this new Carlos serve on par or of equal quality to Sampras or Federer's serve since all three are short players and not tall enough (Carlos 183, Sampras and Federer 185) or is Federer and Sampras' serve better than this latest version or technique of Carlos' serve?
@urosraskovic7730 We will have to wait to see in match play long term how it goes. But Sampras and Federer have arguably top 5 serves in history (I believe Nic didn't put Federer in top 5 but perhaps he said it was top 6, or I'm confusing that with another stroke), and theirs were natural. So I definitely don't think it will be ever at their level. I think Alcaraz just needs to be consistent and injury free service wise, and with the rest of his game, he's there in the top.
@urosraskovic7730 In my mind, you are born with it or you are not. I don't think Carlitos was, probably because most of his life he wasn't that tall, he grew "late", when he started at the ATP he was listed at 1.80, but he stilll grew to 1.83mts. I think he is capable of polishing his serve and get it better, but to be top 6 level in history, not many. It is like Djokovic, he has improved many of his strokes, people may say his forehand is elite, Nick probably put it as the most clutch in history, thus the best one (per his video), and when he entered the tour his forehand was not there. Can Alcaraz's serve be up there? Can he make it that clutch to be top 5? Let's see, my gut feeling is it won't. Doesn't mean I don't think he will be a top 5 ATP player in history, let's see as well!
Do you think this new serve would have been initiated by Carlos or his team if he was #1? Is it more of a way to try and improve and chase Sinner who made serve changes and is #1?
@ Doesn’t Iga have the same issue? lol I was watching her against Elena the other day blasting ground strokes with brute force, but when she serves, there seems to be a bit of tentativeness and lack of explosiveness. Aesthetically, Carlos and Iga have in my opinion, Greek like, tennis physiques. Ciao Cacao! 🎾
Good analysis of his motion changes. IMO, the flaw in Alcaraz's serve is being pinpoint. He's not tall enough to truly hit down on the serve. Pinpoint servers convert some coil energy that's useful to brush up the back of the ball into forward energy that's useful to hit slightly harder. Instead of RPM, pinpointers get through the court velocity. It's not a big enough tradeoff for short people who MUST brush up on the ball.
What you said is not correct. Sampras, Federer and Nadal serve from the 2010 US Open are also short players or similar heights as Alcaraz 185 compared to Carlos' height of 183 so all three (Sampras, Federer and Nadal) have a top serve that is equal to the serve of tall players (Medvedev, Zverev, Hurkacz, Fritz, Tsitsipas, Kyrgios, Roddick, Ivanisevic, Becker and others). What Carlos needs to do is improve his serve by copying the serve technique of Sampras, Federer and Nadal since they are short players and similar heights to Carlos.
@ Nadal does not have a platform serve and is also not know for his serve. Sampras and Federer arguably have the best serves ever, especially when adjusted for their height. They both have platform serves that are totally fluid (Federer’s improved from his teenage years on tour quite a bit). They stuck with the natural upward spin on the ball afforded by a platform serves rather than a marginally increased (mostly insignificant) in velocity.
@euroclyde It is true that Nadal has not had a top serve throughout his career, but the 2010 US Open was an exception. That serve was on par with players of his height (Sampra or Federer) and tall players (Medvedev, Zverev, Hurkacz, Fritz, Tsitsipas, Kyrgios, Roddick, Ivanisevic, Becker and others). Also, is this new Carlos serving technique identical or the same as the serving technique of Sampras, Federer or Nadal from the 2010 US Open?
@@urosraskovic7730 It's different. Alcaraz, who's about 6 feet tall, has a pinpoint serve. His serve will never be on par with Sampras' or Federer's because it is pinpoint. There's is platform. Intuitive Tennis rightly says he now has a very clean, fluid, perhaps "flawless" motion for a pinpoint serve. His serve, IMO, is not flawless because he's not tall enough to not have to worry about clearing the net, which means his choice in the first place to use a motion that is not optimal to do this is a flaw.
@euroclyde Is this new Carlos serve on par or of equal quality to Sampras or Federer's serve since all three are short players and not tall enough (Carlos 183, Sampras and Federer 185) or is Federer and Sampras' serve better than this latest version or technique of Carlos' serve?

he still has that hitch , his high ball toss also hurts the rythm. Sinners serve is much more fluid, lower ball toss. Zverez has high ball toss but the motion is fluid. alcaraz would need to lower his toss
Interesting Alcaraz is working hard to improve his serve. That's nice news. Big task by the way. Watch this. 265 aces in 2024. 302 aces in 2023. Less than some top WTA players. His serve is too easy to get at, especially on hardcourts.

His season drops off after the summer every year. Combination of him burning out towards the end of the season (those big Cincy 23/Olympics 24 losses probably didn't help) & the switch to fast/indoor hard court where more players (better servers) can compete with him & his forehand gets rushed.

The rhythm is slower and the ball toss is higher for Carlos, but the new racquet motion reminds me of Fognini - of course pinpoint vs platform aside.

It’s not all up to technique. Shot selection and placement matter too. He has to keep improving, but it’s easier with a clean technique
