We absolutely did not look like qualifying for the 2010 World Cup until he got back into the starting line with IIRC 4 games left. We then looked dangerous and competitive again. I cannot give any greater praise.

People who don’t rate Heskey don’t understand football. Look at the likes of Darren Bent, James Beattie etc who’s careers spiralled and they played lower down the leagues or stopped scoring goals. Heskey played at the top level for a long time and if it wasn’t for KSI and being picked at the 2010 World Cup which wasn’t his fault, he’d be appreciated more.

I’ll never forget the final game of the 2006/07 season, where he had to play centre back against Sheffield United after we went down to 10 men. And actually did really well.

Shame for Heskey, younger fans will always see him as meme, if simply looking at his goals to games stats (a younger friend of mine described him as the 90's Carlton Cole). His position and style of play has now become redundant due to the advancement of the game, but he was players player and truly brought the best out of Owen in his Ballon Dor season!

Ever since the cretin, KSI really cemented Heskey as a joke among the FIFA and casual crowd, I've defended Heskey to anyone who'd listen. I'm a Liverpool fan, and his first 2 and a bit years at Anfield were very much a success. Then Owen started picking up injuries for fun. A young Gerrard was still finding consistency in his game. And.. we signed fucking Diouf instead of Anelka, latter, every Red I knew at the time wanted instead given his successful loan.
Heskey in the MON Leicester sides and again, the first couple of seasons at Liverpool was a nightmare for opposing players. Near unplayable at times, and capable of scoring some ridiculous goals (UA-cam it!).
Unfortunately Houiller around 2003 started randomly playing him as a winger basically, and his Liverpool career nosedived. Goals dried up big time. In short, he was shafted given his ability and Hou's decision. I can't comment on Brum too much, but I do remember him and Rodegella (sp) being very good together for Wigan.
The guy deserves better from fans, particularly some Liverpool fans still, and England fans for all he did. Tbf, he deserves better from football fans in general, but thanks to KSI, that may never happened until his final breath. And given the moronic nature of social media generation fan certainly, he'll still get ridicule. As pointed out in the vid, Owen & Rooney all loved playing just off him and performed at their best then.

As a Wigan fan, I whole-heartedly agree - the only discrepancy being that Heskey departed Wigan in the same transfer window that the club signed Rodallega (Jan 09). Heskey's most successful attacking partnerships whilst at the club probably came with the likes of Henri Camara, Amr Zaki and Antonio Valencia.

To this day I can still remember this one moment, when my opinion forever changed on him.
Like many especially when young, your favourite player is the one that scores. If they don't score, they are poop, play somebody else.
Then came this one game, I can't remember which but it was an England game and I can see this moment quite clearly in my mind...
...the ball was hoofed long, possibly equal part defensive clearance as well as pass... it was heading towards Heskey and then, he did the unbelievable, he turned his head away from the ball, took his eyes off the ball!!!.... to look upfield, he then turned his head back towards the ball and headed the ball beautifully to Owen, who slotted it away easily....
... and I was stunned, up until that point, childish me had just assumed he had no confidence, hence why he never scored, how wrong I was, that moment showed me he had complete confidence in himself, and unlike some, he acknowledged his limits and instead thrived on his other skills.

It’s quite ridiculous if Heskey has become a joke figure! He is most underrated nowadays! Owen loved playing with him - all the England players of that era praise him highly! One of the best at holding the ball up, so strong, good in the air, hard worker, two good feet, could see a pass etc etc and he defo could finish! England had an excellent record when he started, as did Owen! It’s not all about goals! Heskey was a team player and made the overall team very good indeed! These kids mocking him haven’t a clue - what’s more is he was a real man as well, no fuss, no tantrums, no diving, no ego - a proper respectful gent, the kind of guy you’d want next to you in the trenches! Heskey is an England legend!

When Heskey broke through at Leicester, he looked unstoppable. Quick, powerful and fearless. But something happened to him when he moved to Liverpool, I'm not sure if it was injury related or tactical. But he seemed to lose that fearlessness. Instead of powering through challenges and barreling towards goal he would go down to win free kicks at every opportunity. He seemed to lose the electric pace and acceleration that made him so dangerous in his teens. Despite that he had a superb career. But honestly as a teenager he looked like he would become one of the best players in the world.

weird comparison but i see a lot of what made Heskey great in Che Adams for Southampton. Great physicality and strength as well as really good finish and fantastic hold up play. For us he's the ideal all round partner to Ings who is less rounded but more lethal goalscorer

I remember an old guy chatting to us about footballers and first thing he said when heskey was mentioned was "grafter". I think it summed him up well.

In his days at Leicester, Liverpool and his first season or so at Birmingham, he could occasionally run in behind where his power and strength were utilised in another way. He adapted his game when he was 29/30 to become a pure target man which hampered his scoring (which was never particularly prolific) but prolonged his career as he always gave sides that played a particular style of football a good option. Amazing how a season before he left Leicester, they had prepared themselves with an almighty prolific strikeforce in record signing Ade Akinbiyi and journeyman Trevor Benjamin. Oh dear....

    • @thisisatest8010
      @thisisatest8010 6 років тому

Akinbiyi was signed by Peter Taylor after Heskey had left. In theory he wasn't a bad replacement as he had similar physical attributes to Heskey and had a decent goals return in the second tier. However, he turned out to be absolutely horrendous.

It's strange that people expect Heskey to have scored 22 every season when his role and the team around him changed significantly during his time at Liverpool. For example, he'd barely play with Barmby or Babbel ever again, McAllister and Berger were only there for one more full season and by 02-03 he was playing mostly on the left of midfield.

Heskey was a beast at Liverpool around 2000-2001. The problem is, football changed, became faster and more tactical, and Heskey didn't adopt to the changes.

I think the game developer just love to make him useless. Learn that from experienced
No lie, i championship manager 03/04, as liverpool manager and pair owen and heskey upfront. We won the league with owen score 30 and heskey 4. He just suck at the game, eeverytime its one on one he always just pass it to the keeper. That's not all, 2 times this happen; keeper already out of his position and heskey still miss wtf?? But wait, threres more, one penalty shootout against arsenal. Adriano the striker need to be put as gk bcos lehmann injured. The game goes to shootout and guess who's the only one who got his penalty saved by adriano??

He made space for them. Messed up the cohesion of defences. Defenders found him and his strength on the ball difficult to deal with and he won a lot of free kicks. Totally unselfish team player. He was adept as a target man, winning aerial balls and moving them on to his strike partner.
