2024 Honda HR-V EX-L Review - Is This The Trim To Buy?

  • Sometimes you can get away with purchasing a mid-tier trim where you receive the desired features and overall comfort. The 2024 Honda HR-V EX-L might be your best option, as the leather trimmed seats, power moonroof, dual zone climate control, and 9 inch touchscreen all come together to make this subcompact crossover appealing. While the 2024 HR-V is a little underpowered, it offers plenty of practicality and interior space to make a great family vehicle on a budget.
Huge thank you to Atamian Honda in Tewksbury, MA for providing the 2024 Honda HR-V EX-L for this review.

This is a really good video! Especially the test drive part. Many others are tough on the power of the engine. I felt this was honest, without insulting the pickup. Thank you!

Lots of people equate not enough power with acceleration. The power is adequate. Keep in mind, years ago Civics and Corollas in their Sport trim only had about 130 horsepower.
There's 2 $300 aftermarket add ons to improve performance. The K Tuner flash CPU calibration fir tge Civic Sport with the sane engine, or the simpler plug and play Pedal Commander that has several variable settings to improve or alter throttle response, and does not alter the CPU and potentially void the warranty and can be easily removed.

  • @jjacob25101
    @jjacob25101 9 місяців тому +7

I'll take an Urban Grey Pearl FWD Sport over the EX-L, despite the extra options. No Bose stereo, I don't like the sunroof unless I want everything else, like if I got a Civic Sport Touring Hatchback. I preferred the reliable manual adjust seats and everything the Sport has.
I live in Honolulu, HI, so I don't need the extra cost and slower acceleration of the AWD. Equipped with all the factory options and accessories I want, it comes out to about $30K.
The Sport I believe has slightly stiffer suspension and steering, plus the bigger, wider wheels and tires. If I don't like what body roll it has, I would get the slightly lowered and stiffer Eibach springs.
The HR-V does have all LED lighting, including the reverse and rear signal lights, exterior mirror turn signal, two cargo hatch lights and two rear ceiling touch capacitive LED lights
Honda specifically chose this reliable N/A 2.0L engine for its target consumer demographic. Many complain about the lack of power, but often equate that to acceleration.
This is a compact SUV for the masses who want an alternative to the Civic, is is not a Sport oriented top trim model like a Sport Touring, which the could release in the future, or an Si. But there are two $300 aftermarket options. A flash tune from K Tuner, and a plug and play Pedal Commander to improve throttle response control, with lots of variable settings and can be easily installed and removed.
It's hard to beat the ride/steering feel and quality co pared to its competitors, especially since it has independent rear suspension.
All the talk about the Civic and HR-V lacking things other cars have for less do not have the quality, reliability, durability and especially longevity the Civic and HR-V has, especially with this engine. They could make a Sport Touring or SI, but it would be a cost factor up to the corporate and marketing people to decide feasibility.
Except for those looking for a Sport Touring Trim like the Civic Hatchback, the three trims address the mainarket groups that would want this vehicle.
I have a long list of things I already will add after the OEM options and accessories to make it perfect for what I need and want.

Just got one and upgraded from 22 civic - it’s the same acceleration as a civic sport 2022 due to same horsepower and engine. These people comparing have never test driven this car. Y’all have no idea what you’re talking about it accelerates perfectly fine, it’s not a damn race car. It’s a mini tank that is safe and reliable which is what most people look for in a car- go get the type R if you’re complaining about acceleration and HP lol - and older Honda may have been more power but the new 4 cylinders are so good and efficient they use less power compared to older Hondas. 😂

It's June 2024. I know some people like the top of the line EX-L, but the enthusiast minded like myself still prefer the Sport. Though the acceleration is not the best, the 2.0L is a lot more durable, with longevity compared to the problematic 1.5L turbo. There's two aftermarket items that can improve performance and throttle response.
But Honda is coming out with the Civic Hybrids very soon. Ptobably with the same 2.0L putting out 200 hp and 232 ft/lbs torque in the latest Accord and CR-V.
If Honda adds an HR-V Sport Touring Hybrid l, that would be great.

@yours1ana I would say a Sport is more for a teen driver. And only get AWD if you really need it for the weather and road conditions where you live. Otherwise it's extra cost, extra weight and more complications and potential maintenance and repair costs down the road. Also, with AWD, if you get a flat you can't patch and your tires are not new, if you need to replace your tire, you need to replace all of them because the computer elecrobics could overtime damage you car electronic with the different sized tires.

The Sport is more popular with younger more car enthusiast people, looks nicer, handles better with the tuned suspension, bigger 18" wheels/tires, and not needed, but looks way better with the optional exterior black emblems. I would get the weather mats, rear cargo mats and seat back protectors, along with the wheel locks, etc.

I had 8200 equity in my 20 Fit EX. I had a 19 accord touring hybrid I had to sell in my divorce. I wanted a accord ex for 23. My car insurance was going to go up by 445 for 6 months. The Civic was 440 more over 6 months. The lowest at 235 more was the HRV. Accords and Civics are stolen more and very expensive to repair. I bought a 24 HRV EXL blind spot just on the cheaper insurance. I paid 29K, no mark ups, put 2K more down. My Fit was 330. My HRV is 342 a month. I financed 20500. Don’t over pay for a car or insurance. I really wanted another accord but not paying that more for insurance.

Some dumb ass ran his truck right into my Mini Cooper, at a 90° angle near the drivers door hinge, going about 35 MPH. My car was totaled. I could tell right off driving this car was wonderful compared to the Mini Cooper. You could not talk to your passenger because of all the tire and road noise, in that car. What I love most about the HR-V is that everyone riding in my vehicle are pushing or exceeding 6’ feet height and there’s plenty of leg room for that 2nd row. Also, my granddaughter’s car seat fits very nicely in the center without squishing my tall passengers on either side. Fuel economy and maintenance costs are fantastic too. It does exactly what I need it to do for me. 🥹😊

They are thinking about trying to maintain overall quality levels at a price point . To move up … you go to the CRV Hybrid . Which is quite expensive . To get a higher performance small SUV … go German or Lexus . Honda knows their market . Of course a bit more power is always welcome . But it always costs . I find with Hondas that enough power is there if you put your foot down . These are not sports cars .

And as stated, this is not intended to be a performance vehicle. But being similar to a Honda Civic, if the owner wants more performance, there's the aftermarket.

We have a 2018 EX-L-Navi and a 2024 EX-L and love them both, but they're not powerful at all. The newer one is noticeably better but compared to the 4 cylinder 2012 and 2003 Accords we have, they're both horrible.
I know everyone tries to say the power is adequate but come on, let's be honest, it's awful. In a future model if Honda puts a 2.4 liter engine with a REAL transmission, they will fly off the dealer's lots. I'll sell ours and upgrade for sure. But for now, excluding the power, everything in the EX-L is perfect. It's a really well put together vehicle.
