    I'm 68 years old and I've had 3 air cooled Porsches. I live in GEORGIA ! It's HOT down here! The 996.1 was my first very comfortable 911 to drive with Joy. The A/C is awesome! However, I do miss my old 1980 SC. The good thing.. The 996 Gen1 is as close as you can get to an old analog Porsche . And YES mine has been fitted w/a LN IMS bearings.The PERFECTLY sorted 996 cabriolet. I have also added the GT3 Ground Effects to it.. It looks awesome~~ for a cabriolet. I'll keep and pass it on to a nephew of my choice. However- I hope I do some good road tracking on it before I have to pass it along!! HooAh! and GOD Bless all Porschephiles! Sarge

    Another good video Jay - thank you. Outside of online forums, I agree heartily that Porsche owners are very accepting of one another’s cars, no matter what they are. I used to be shy with my ‘70 914-4 1.8 - but that was me no one in PCA ever disparaged my car.
    On the IMS bearing, I need to be contrarian. I bought a ‘00 Boxster with 120 K miles for my son. Within 500 miles, the IMS bearing was going and needed to be changed before disaster struck. That being lived through, the car is a blast! Not as much of a driver’s car as my 964, but nothing matches driving with the top down in good weather.

    Dear Jay. I‘m so impressed. Having watched around 500 UA-cam 911 videos, yours is one of the very best. I like how you analyzed the 996 pro‘s and con‘s in a fact-based manner. It has been a pleasure to listen and watch. I can very well imagine the smile on your face when you start the engine, which is, by the way, appreciated in nearly all 996 tests. And, as you pointed out, a daily driver‘s car for less than a compact car and, my assumption, a stable market value. So, thank you very much and keep on enjoying your 996. Johannes

    Happy owner of a factory original 2001 996 C4 manual with 190.000 Kms. Artic silver, full boxster red interior. No issues at all and the interior looks almost new considering the age (few scratches on the driver's seat). My dad had it from new and from a few years ago I am the lucky one enjoying it. Normal service and maintenance and a few parts replaced at Porsche (headlight washers, lights switch and sunroof motor) but nothing related to the engine. If one day I need to replace the engine (fingers crossed) I guess 20.000$ is not that much after 22 years, and then my son will have the chance to drive it as well. Another story is being the 8th owner not knowing how the previous owners have driven the car and maintained the car despite the service book (change of oil and filters in some cheap workshops where they don't check anything else doesn't mean the car has been treated properly in my eyes). Those examples are the ones we all watch on UA-cam, those ones are the ones with terrible stories about every part being replaced and dated interiors.The 996 is a great and reliable car, but like any other car, if you buy a high mileage one, with a clear lack of service or a car after 5-6 different owners, then you will have issues for sure.

    Jay, what an excellent video. I was fortunate enough to find a great condition 2004 911 Carrera 4S X51 package two years ago and it has gone up in value 15 - 20 percent. I have no plans to sell it and hope to enjoy it until I pass it down to one of the kids. Every time I turn on the ignition I get that huge grin that only another Porsche driver understands. THANKS FOR A FUN VIDEO.

    I bought my 2003 C2 cab tip with 150,000 miles on it. I had my indy do the IMS, RMS, plugs, Coil packs, and since the engine was out I serviced the Tiptronic and did the water pump and never looked back. Heading into spring I will redo the front suspension as my has a bit of a creak at slow speeds over some speed bumps. The only other thing that I did was replaced both hydraulic rams for the soft top when we noticed that one was leaking. I bought mine for just under $15,000 shipped to my door from California and all in I am just about at $20,000 after 3 years of ownership. Any car that is not kept up will be a turd regardless of brand and most cars regardless of millage and age will require some deferred maintenance so plan accordingly and enjoy your 911 and all of the history that goes along with that. I also feel the same about my R107 SLs which in my opinion are also a lot od smiles per mile if you don't own a concourse quality garage queen.

    I had the chance to buy a 997 4S a month ago and decided the 996 4S was the way to go. A lot more cost effective, more parts available, IMO better interior with less buttons and switches to touch, way better rear end look, and lighter for more speed 😎

      Just took an excellent trip to FL Keys … 996.2 ran perfectly … great pull on stretches of Alligator Alley … and sure footedness through some torrential downpours. I like using this car. I baby it by garaging / covering / servicing / handwashing / waxing but it’s not too precious to use it as intended. Find an excuse for a trip!😀

    I recently bought a 996 40AE. This has been my no-compromise dream car for a few years after some research. I finally got the chance to get it. I considered alternatives including the 996.1 and the Boxster S. I'm so glad I got the 40AE! I did see your review of the 996.1 with the direct cable throttle. Good, but so far as my driving the 40AE, I'm not missing anything.
    It came with summer tires so I haven't been able to take her out on the highway yet. On local streets, though, I have been enjoying the drive so much! Wow, wow, wow!!! I am in love.
    The shifter (6 speed manual) is fine. I don't understand the talk about needing a short shifter as stock according to some feels like a school bus. I came from a Honda 6th gen hatchback and that shifter is long. The 996 shifter is not and feels good and crisp.
    I will never sell my Honda and now my P-car. Both are wonderful in their own ways.

    Completely agree, although I would never buy a tiptronic. I Own a 996.2 GT3 Clubsport, what a joy to drive, also it has the Mezger engine, every rev gives you a smile. I didn‘t like the looks 20 years ago but I must say, it aged pretty well. Besides the good weight, it is also pretty wind slippery due to the small size, compared to the latest models. I mean my car tops out at 308 kmh with just 381 hp. Todays cars need 500 horses to do that…for example the M3.

    Many years ago, when I was having one of my mid-life crises, I stopped at the local Porsche dealership where a buddy was a salesman. I pled my case and we went for test drives in a few models. Returning from the last of them I asked my final and most telling question: "Hans, should I buy one?" He said, "Are you completely insane?" Then we went to the shop where there were a lot of them on lifts and on the floor. He then proceeded to tell me what was wrong with each of them and what it was going to take in time and money to fix them. I left a wiser man and with a Mercedes (which was also a mistake, but a less severe one).

    Im not so concerned about IMS or RES… my biggest fear by far is bore-score…. Which every Porsche mechanic I have talked identifies as something that will eventually happen to every 996..997… lots of Boxters and some Caymans. Once it starts it may progress slowly or literally overwhelms the engine in a matter of months. Unfortunately the fix is not $3K.. or even $5K….. but routinely $20K and more ( full engine rebuild). I love these cars but this honestly freaks me out..

      Subject to the same thesis in the video: there is no data as to how often it happens and ones predominantly talking about it are the ones that would sell you the remedy. Yes, when it happens, it’s catastrophic but how often it happens is, IMHO at least and maybe at most, overhyped. There are PLENTY of cars out there with over 200,000 miles on them!

    The 996 is the only 911 most can afford or for those who are unwilling to pay the minimum entry price of $40k for a average condition air cooled 911. I preferred an air cooled late 70's - early 80's ac 911 but also wanted to retire early at 53 and instead chose a 99 996 manual which popped up near me that I paid $11k in 2015. Good to see prices are on the uptick for the 996 so when I sell mine for a AC 911, I can at least keep one kidney.

    I really want to buy one, I located a 1998 today at a dealer, the IMS has not been done and they want 19k for it 90k miles and its a convertible, do they tend to lose rigidity in the soft top form? They told me it was not a issue in that year, I disagreed but the lawsuit shows it less common. So would it be fair to say that I am safer with the earlier model, and if so how much? Also can you predict the bearing when changing the oil frequently and dumping the oil filter to look for any fine metal as a true warning? I am risking a lot by purchasing one but you only live once right, I just dont want to live with a blown porsche in my garage as beautiful as it is... So whats better a 1997-2000 or step up to the 996.2 but pay another 10k?

    • @JAYREAD
      @JAYREAD  4 роки тому +1

      Hi there! Well, they say that the earlier dual row bearing in the earlier cars has a lesser chance of grenading than the later single row bearings in the 996.2 but there are plenty of stories of both going. No one really has accurate data so, as I said in my video, it comes down to your approach towards risk. Yes, if someone can show regular oil changes AND that there has been nothing metallic in the changed oil then that’s a big positive. The old phrase applies here: buy the best you can afford. There are PLENTY around so take your time. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if it’s a 996.1 or a 996.2 - just get the best one you can find! Hope this helps!

      Agreed w Jay. I have a March1999 and it was 84k miles when I had to do clutch and added ims and rms. Went ahead and added new factory spec exhaust since the silencers were splitting at the seams. All up is was over $5k in shop costs, but good for another 84k miles. Factor in that a new C2 or 4 is well over $100k and it just makes sense to spend way less acquiring and responsibly maintaining a 996. I like the idea of being a good steward of a car that has strong evidence that it’s been looked after.

    • @aquaticterrafirma
      @aquaticterrafirma 4 роки тому +1

      @@ccasche5088 Why were the exhausts going, is that why I see so many with modified or was this due to the climate and driving conditions? The biggest thing I cannot understand is why all these 996;s and Caymans have had 5 owners and only 50-70k miles on them. Do these people hate them so soon they trade them in, I see this time after time and I cannot understand why? Do they have so much money they cant stay with the car? When I buy one its not going anywhere unless its a roach which is what I fear these people are finding??

    • @JAYREAD
      @JAYREAD  4 роки тому

      @@aquaticterrafirma I don’t think it’s a big risk. Somewhere between 1% and 5% and probably at the lower end if you have a dual row bearing. Get a manual car and replace it with a new bearing and don’t worry about it. If it’s manual and you don’t go with the IMS Solution (itself nearly $2k) then you can get it done much more cheaply than what I say in my video. There are people who do the work themselves although I understand you need to a special tool to get the old one out. Follow your dreams but don’t risk anything! Good things come to those that wait!

      @bigmacdaddy1234 4 роки тому

      Just my point of view. I owned a 996 and can say from experience that it's a bit overrated and a very overvalued car. The juice ain't worth the squeeze! You will not only be overpaying for this car but also all of Porsche's design flaws as well. It drives 'good' but certainly not 'great' and when something goes wrong, it is very expensive to fix. They are not that fast and gas mileage is pretty bad too. The convertible top can be particularly infuriating to diagnose when it's not working, and you will be paying for the IMS bearing to be changed. Lot's of things will go wrong with this car: windows will not drop when you open the door, water pump will fail, engine oil leaks, sensors failing. Hope you have a great Porsche mechanic nearby. If the transmission goes, you are really in trouble because most transmission shops will not touch it. If you read the Porsche 996 forum's, you will see a lot of posts regarding issues and more... If this was a $10K car, sure have at it. But it's not. People are asking a lot of money for a car with a plastic interior and expensive design flaws. Advice: if you are spending 19K, and want a really great drivers car, consider a 2019 pre-owned Mini Cooper. It will smoke the Porsche in every way possible and you will still have a warranty on it. Many people will balk and say that the Porsche is better than the Mini....and they would be wrong. Before you spend your hard-earned money, take both cars out for a drive and see which one is better value for money. Not trying to shatter your dream car but money is hard to come by and dumping it into a car that is over priced with serious design flaws is not really a good idea.

I’m 6 feet and my leg doesn’t hit the center console! The shifter is too far forward?! What? Adjust your seat then! I could fit my 13 year old son on the back!

      Just because MacPheerson strut is usually used in economy cars does not mean you should put it off. I am unsure of the 992 generations of the 911 however the 991 gt series run a MacPherson front and a wishbone back (like the 996) and it is probably one of the best handling cars you can buy with money as of now.
      The interior is ugly as all hell but they do hold up fairly well comparing to cars from it's the early 2000s.
      The m96 is honestly a pretty shitty engine to work on since pretty much everything that breaks on it requires it to be dropped which is easy but reinstalling is a pain in the ass without a lift. Don't track this engine unless you get a deep sump since the plastic baffles do break and they don't even hold enough oil for a long corner. Other than that most of the engines break ~150k from wear from what I've seen.
      Idk what your are talking about the transmissions since they are pretty beefy. People LS swap these all the time and the factory transmission takes it like a champ even on the c2. Turbo ones can go up to 600 HP stock safely but don't want to punch it.
      I can agree on the road noise since it is pretty annoying. It's a great cruiser but it is definitely a turn on the radio car on the highway.
      The engine is probably the biggest weak point to this vehicle if you are planning on getting a budget track day car. Open blocks are pretty much a no go for hp track builds and one of the mods for the high hp m96 engines is to close block it (like the ej25) and add some sleeves and you're good to go. Ims is a weakness ofc but everyone and their grandmal has the solution to that.

      ... " If you’re considering a 996, it’s imperative that you’re aware of the somewhat negative, and totally inaccurate reputation spread by those who quite literally hate the series ... The 996 series was the first all new model range since the original 901/911 series in 1963, and was true to the original Porsche tradition ... The new 996 Carrera was lighter, more powerful, faster, more aerodynamic than its predecessor, but the method of achieving this superiority came at a price.
      It’s not possible to detail all the untruths that abound on the internet about the 996 series in a few pages ... It’s claimed by its detractors that the 996 was the first mass-produced 911, which is completely untrue. Average yearly production of the 996 was 21.000, and this number was matched in model years 1991 ( 964 ), and 1996 ( 993 ). In other words the new 911’s production numbers were nothing new ...
      Has the 996 had problems? Yes, but so has every 911 series before it. However because the 996 was the first with a water-cooled engine, problems quickly magnified into an anti-996 campaign, helped along by the worst public relations effort by a manufacturer in history - Total abject silence" ...
