- My unpopular take on what's really going on with the JHS Effect. Leave a comment letting me know if you think I'm close or way off base.
Thanks!

the reality is that a good guitarist with talent..sounds better than a shi**y guitarist with an expensive setup..but practicing hour after hour is more strenuous than buying new stuff...you nailed it man!
I think what Josh is really trying to do, is make us realize that inside that box on our pedal board is just a circuit, and circuits can be recreated. He would know, that's his job. Most pedals are based on other existing pedals, maybe with some tweaks, so it's likely that the pedals you have or can easily acquire will do what you want them to do. We do have to be realistic though. If the amp and speaker we're playing through don't even sound good, then neither will a $5000 Klon. I imagine that people who paid $60 for a Bad Monkey 19 years ago and didn't like it were playing through practice amps with the cheapest 10" speaker the manufacturer could find, so they didn't get a real representation of the pedal.
For myself, I like both the EHX Hot Tubes, and I want a regular ol' tube screamer type pedal. Instead of having 2 pedals, insert the EHX Hot Wax dual overdrive. I'm not sure I'll ever need to buy another overdrive to replace it.
That Washburn pedal sounds sick. Just a nice, thick, cranked amp distortion. And for $20? Can't really beat that. But for anyone looking, there are probably 100 other pedals that do the exact same thing. 😂
You nailed it. Well said. Thanks for watching too!
I just recently started watching guitar pedal videos, partly curiosity, partly boredom with other stuff that I had been watching. I saw that "Bad Monkey" video shortly after wondering why some local dude on a local facebook musicians group trying to get big money for a Bad Monkey pedal. I was wondering, what's so special about that pedal that he thinks it's worth that kind of money...now I'm understanding it a bit more.
A bit of background, I'm an old bass guitar player who hasn't played out since the end of the 1990s. I've been playing around with baritone ukulele, and an electric version that I converted from a short scale guitar. I was never any good with 6 strings, but I can manage 4 ok. Anyway, I've been looking at a few pedals to mess around with. I have an old Rat pedal that's probably close to 40 years old that I mess around with, and I just bought a used MXR stereo chorus to mess around with. I recently discovered shoegaze music, so now I'm intrigued with the variety of sounds in that genera...
Good luck with your channel in the future!
Thanks for sharing and watching!
To quote Josh, “If it sounds good, it is good.”
Exactly.
It happens because so many guitarists don't know how circuitry works. They don't realize that an Electro Harmonix Soul Food is literally the same thing as an actual Klon Centaur. They don't realize it because they don't put in even the barest amount of time it takes to learn about how circuits work. They'll listen to some dummy on the Gear Page that it has special diodes or some shit and they just waste money. I miss the older JHS vids when it was just him playing guitar. I like the newer stuff I guess but pedals in a Mix make it so much harder to tell if I want it at all. A pedal in a Mix is nearly impossible to actually hear it's personality.
Interesting take!
Thanks for watching!
You've hit the nail on the head regarding falsely inflating the used market. Human nature is always trying to find the shortcut to get where you want to go. Years ago I went chasing tone by trying / changing speakers--spent thousands of dollars, sold most of them off taking a huge loss.
But yes most of the market is driven by people who can't play well. Practice, Practice, practice only makes you better.
If anyone buys pedals for reasons any other than how will this affect my tone of my own playing and equipment I use are looney. I have found that guitar and amps chosen along with EQ and maybe just a boost is all I pretty much need. Have I spent money on other pedals and then sold them? Yes. Not many who havent. But I dont go by a single JHS video nor care about a single video. The problem is buying online like Amazon crap and no shops around like used to be carrying everything in many areas. Creates a huge online market that no one knows how will affect things.
Have that Wasburn pedal and the Blues for 5 bucks each at Target years ago
Get you a noise gate with the 4cm and get rid of that hum bro.....
I think you're spot on..... everyone wants to find shortcuts when the answer is to play/practice more and use whatever you got.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts🎶

The Washburn Soloist Distortion has just skyrocketed in value.😁
Haha, thanks for watching!
I bought a washburn Soloist on eBay , before even seeing this i feel great about it 😊🦊📿☕
Haha right on!
That amp sure has a ton of operating noise...what's up with that?
Are you talking about a hum? I'll be honest, I don't hear anything unusual going on with extra noise from the amp.
@@Sam-Isfeld Listen at 5:44. This is the hum.... it goes right into the mic and out through the mains. I have a 65 Bandmaster and a Blues Jr. that are absolutely quiet and still sometimes I get to a new venue and there is nothing that can be done. This is where a volume pedal comes in very handy onstage so you can duck in and out during quiet passages.
Another factor that people seem to forget is an article about Billy Corgan claimed that he was using a WISH Clon Klone. Around the same time JHS did their Klon Klone video. Those two incidents caused the prices to go up almost overnight. Keep plugging away, maybe talk more background about the pedal and see if you could do a Zoom meeting with someone who worked at Washburn. Peace, D
Add some reverb and delay and that pedal is usable all day. Thanks for the video, Sam. I'm glad that enough people like you get that this is an "us" problem and not a JHS problem. We hear what we want to hear with gear expectations. Your comments about learning our gear and playing are spot on. Thanks. Subscribed.
Thanks for your insight and thanks for watching/subscribing!
I tried one o the Marshall Original. I thought it sounded horrid. Was I wrong?
I think the fact that you tried it is all that matters right?
I'm going to dive in that drawer!
Absolutely!
