    Currently in the process of joining the local VFD. The process here is that you start out on the same BA course that is used for the exams. To get you acquainted with the environment, you start with no mask on and no cylinder and tag along with another team. After a couple of walkthroughs you get a mask. Later, a filter is added to the mask to introduce breathing resistance. Once you have that down, you get to go with a full BA.
    THere are hatches, sliding doors, obstacles there you can get tangled up, and also tight passages where you even might need to take the cylinder off your back in order to fit through. You usually push it ahead of you. There will always be 2 man teams on the course. It is nearly impossible to complete alone as in places, you need to push or pull your buddy through a passage, like a 10 ft long tube. If you are in any way claustrophobic then this is most definitely NOT for you.
    Oh, and the BA course is rearranged once or twice a year, so your recertification will not be on the same course as last time.

    Quite tough when the vision is blacked out but its a good way to demonstrate how tough is can be when faced with a real life situation fair play to the candidate he did really well

    I have my test next week. I have to wear glasses 24/7 they have glass lenses not plastic am I able to take them off for all the tests

    • @northyorksfire
      @northyorksfire  Рік тому +2

      There is no need to remove glasses before tests, other than the breathing apparatus enclosed space test for fitting of the mask, which has zero visibility anyway.
      If a candidate is successful, inserts can be provided for use when wearing breathing apparatus. Other than that, glasses can be worn, although they will need to be of a required specification.

    Hello. I wish to become a firefighter I am confident I have the physical capability but I am not sure if I able to as if ma colour bling. Will this stop me becoming a firefighter?

      We’re not currently recruiting for wholetime firefighters, but do on-going recruitment for on-call firefighters. If you are interested in applying to be an on-call firefighter we would recommend downloading the information pack from our website which contains details about vision requirements. The pack can be found on this page www.northyorksfire.gov.uk/careers/latest-vacancies/on-call-firefighter/ under the section titled ‘How do I apply to become an on call firefighter’

    That visor placed over the helmet does it obscure vision or are you completely blind???

    • @jort93z
      @jort93z 3 роки тому +5

      My guess would be that it is supposed to simulate heavy smoke, so limit visibility a lot.

      If I remember rightly from doing it for retained, you are completely blind and in total darkness also, absolutely 0 light on the actual test. I have this test tomorrow morning for Merseyside Fire & Rescue wholetime, so I can confirm tomorrow haha.

      Most places in the UK require you to be in full BA as well as firefighting kit. It's not as simple as how this made it look.
