D&D Story: Too many betrayals!

  • I got another Dungeons and Dragons Story from my campaign. The players added a new party member to the group-Claire, who was a bit too innocent and naive, as well as a few startling revelations the players had towards the end of the campaign.
End music is: "Et Viola" by Chris Haugen from the UA-cam Audio Library.

I'm confused. The players decided to trust an NPC because they had been betrayed by 8 NPCs in the last 2 sessions?
      Am I understanding that correctly?

@@dynamicworlds1 In this case that's actually just basic espionage. Once you've IDed a spy it's actually pretty profitable to let them keep spying so you can use them to send false info back to whomever they're spying for. Just knowing what info they're after can be a huge advantage because then you can make sure they only get the info you want them to have. Like false plans and the like.

      Reasons something is not stolen:
      1. Document is being borrowed.
      2. Damaged and taken for repair.
      3. Dirty and in need of cleaning.
      4. In need of document verification.
      5. Moved to new pedestal.
      6. Undergoing Duplication.
      7. Owner came by to collect it.
      8. Writer is adding addendums.

I could see the lower ones being fooled in those humorous ways, because they are pretty simple, which is why they need to take things up the chain of command. My understanding is that Modrons are like machines (computers) in working on a very yes or no basis, with the higher they are being the more complex amounts of logic they can process.
The lowest I guess thinking there is no problem, because there being a problem should be impossible.

That was with a short term npc with no actual plot relevance outside of a momentary incident. So in the plane of law a sign that says "Keep off the grass" would physically prevent you from stepping on the grass, but it wouldn't stop you from casting fireball on it.

An idea to throw the players for a spin: You could make a character that is shady, but where you have not yet decided if he is good or evil.
If the players asume he is evil, make him be the good guy. And their distrust causing them to fail. You know, a good ritual that has to be done in time (like a bad ritual would be). Maybe give it some ingredients that are hard to come by and spoil quickly, once aquired? Stuff like Deva Tears that varporize in the mortal realm.
