The LE was a brilliant design, made for a market that did not really exist, as it was intended for commuters. It was saved by police forces realising that a beat policeman could quietly cover a much larger area patrolling suburban streets in a single shift than he and three colleagues could on foot. Police use also contributed to the demise of Velocette when they sold a large number to police forces on fixed price contracts, and inflation pushed up their costs. The Morris Minor did the same job as the LEs were phased out.
