With all the dazzling combinations of color and sophisticated techniques colored pencils can offer, it's easy to forget what a wonderful drawing medium a single colored pencil can be! Smooth, dense color, precise detail, and sensitive gradients- what more could one want? Very nice!
Two days ago I was doing some portrait studies and I finally pushed myself out of my comfort zone by doing a couple profile views even though I felt intimidated by the idea, but as I did them, I was surprised to find that it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be and they turned out to be my favorites of those studies I did that day. I wouldn’t call them “good” since I’m still a beginner, but it’s giving me the confidence to do more studies so I can improve even more.
Ooooh look who’s back with another video! I love sketching with colored pencils especially with polychromos, imo it’s much better than graphite pencils, just makes me fun and harder to erase so i can allow myself to make mistakes more freely 😄
This is such a beautiful spread of portrait drawings 🤩 I love how you added the shapes and shading behind, connecting them all, it really ties them all in together.
This is really one of my favorite art vids on youtube, and I keep coming back to it. Requires only basic materials, masterful demonstration, and makes a valuable exercise look fun and interesting.
I have a really tough time using only one colour. I figured that it is all about pressure variation. Now I know it is also about the swinging of the pencil movement to give a colourful depth with the background. Excellent and helpful tutorial!
Hullo Jess, I enjoyed this video and hope you continue to create and encourage others with their Art journeys! These sketch's are a tremendous practice session and you make it look so easy! I know with practice everyone can do as well, it is the time spent at the drawing board or sketchbook that tells in finished works as well. Thanks for being so positive and that spark of light missing in so much of the daily detritus we must wade through. Thank You.
Jess I so admire your work and your channel. I have struggled with the human figure and portraits. It drives me nuts. I feel so much more comfortable in a landscape. Please please continue these videos. They’re so helpful to me. I would love it if you could break it down a bit more showing us your process. Where you start then where you head next ie head shape, lips? Nose? Eyes? Why in this order? Do you have little tricks that you do for yourself that you could share? Thanks so much again.❤
You nailed it again Jess ! And a little tip from me to everyone: You can draw an under drawing with colored pencil ( like grisaille ) in any color you want that will suit the subjects colors, and then glaze over it with other colors. Do the under drawing a little lighter than you would normally though. The drawing will pop out from the page. It takes a little get used to it, but I know you´ll love it.
WOW I love this video and this topic. your videos always inspire me to do draw or paint right now. Please continue the second episode that drawing or painting with 2 colors and 3 colors!!
I like your style! I'm glad I found your channel at the same time I started to draw again, you have inspired me a lot of times when I needed motivation also, I am certainly fascinated with the second drawing, I love it
I always adored monochromatic sketches! Thay really show the values in the drawing and are a great way to stude the highlights and a shadow. I recently got new pencils and can't wait to draw with you now!!
Such a good video was again! I love just using one colour, i like how the image just pops more with just one colour. Thank again for a lovely video, i'm sending love to you from the Uk!!! ❤
As always! These videos are so helpful and your art is mesmerizing you really do bring the art to life. I feel every emotion and can almost talk to them.🥰❤
Thank you for sharing Jess. I enjoy watching you draw very much and hope I will remember all that I am learning from you. I would like to see your reference photos and hear what you are thinking as you make your artistic decisions about how you will translate the photo into your drawing.
This is a great idea!! You’ve inspired me to try it! I truly love the content you put out and I always look forward to seeing more from you and improving my own art in the process. I thought I would finally tell you. Thank you ❤
just the video i needed! my color pencils arent as pricey/not of high quality so i prefer to work monochromatic (since they dont blend as well and layering is tedious work when working with lots of color), just as i enjoy working with graphite and this video is really helpful! love to see your process especially hatchings!! very inspiring to see such a spread, i feel energized to do studies in my sketchbook just by watching ^^
So that is how you do monochrome! I’ve always been fascinated in your process since I saw your technique that you draw a light tone on the paper using graphite then erasing for the highlights. I think that was from your video with Slew 😁
The proportions and placement of the facial features are spot on. And without guidelines! Whew, that's a major skill. I'm still practicing but have a long way to go. I'm better and drawing animals 😏
Hey Jess! I love your channel and watch all your videos. I am a prediminantly lead pencil artist and have been trying to get into coloured pencil (not just monochrome), but compared to lead I find them really hard to blend and a lot more waxy/hard. I don't want to blame my tools, but do you know if pencil choice would make things easier? I am using an assortment of ones from high school that I kept, maybe some softer ones would help the transition? Love your work and you inspire me a lot!
Absolutely love your videos Jess! They inspire me so much that I've fallen back in love with art. What coloured pencils do you recommend? I have very cheap ones I bought online and they aren't very good, and the lead keeps breaking!

this is just sooo amazing. you do it so nicely.. what do I do, I don't get any ideas from my mind or surroundings some times when i am eager to draw and when I am not, I have plenty of ideas.. Is writing ur ideas a good practice??
Hi Jess, I love your work! 🙏🏻 Ok, monochromatic but I noticed you’re not cross hatching: you don’t like or this challenge is just without…? Also, for lower value did you use eraser o just avoid hatching? Oho… sorry I’ve seen the eresse at the end… which eraser is that?
