From a veterinary point of view, the description of normal behaviours is so important! If something goes wrong and the animal needs to go to the vet, it makes it easier for us to diagnose. Yesterday a lecturer told us about a dog having fits that was bought into her clinic by pet sitters. Turns out it was supposed to be on medication, the owners just thought one night without the medication wouldn't hurt. They didn't even think to tell the sitters of its condition. -.-
I also recommend leaving a written note with signature stating that that owner approves of you, the sitter, for bringing in their animals to the vet in case of an emergency, along with contact information/method of payment on the sheet. Accidents happen, and this has been what I always have on hand when I pet sit for family, JUST in case something happens.
Snakes FTW! Just water and poo removal. No, you don't have to feed them. No, you don't have to touch a mouse. No, you don't have to hold them. NO! You don't have to do anything with mice! Don't look in the freezer...
This is a very informative video. It's also good to know if the animal is microchipped just in case they escape. I house/dog sit pretty regularly for a family with five dogs and I've had a couple escape scares. Policies on human food are good to know too. Some people are okay with their animals having a little bit of certain types of foods. They're also just really fun to watch. They all have such distinct personalities and they just love me. Who doesn't want to wake up covered in puppies?
I am a petsitter from the UK, I do that for living working from a company, and most of my clients are amazing, but I had some instances where the pet owners lied about their dogs age or didn't tell me of their medical condition(s) or only told me when they dropped the animal off at my flat, and / or didn't have any appropriate bedding or appropriate dog toys (one young couple got their dog regular ones from the *toy store* instead of the ones at pet stores, and it got shredded within seconds and the pieces were dangerous if swallowed!), and just saying "nah, he/she sleeps anywhere in our house, we don't have anywhere specific he/she sleeps in". I had a few of those kinds of incidents, and it made me so frustrated and when I messaged the owners about it they would get mad at me for "not being able to care for their animal right" (I have been petsitting with the company for over a year now and I have 5+ years experience with common domestic animals, like dogs and cats, rodents, ferrets, bunnies, etc), and then tell me new things I didn't know about in the first place about their pet and how I'm "not satisfying their needs for *that* and *this*". Thankfully most of my clients are amazing people who give me detailed lists about their pet(s) and home (if petsitting at their home), and all the necessary contact details and vet numbers and addresses, and resolve issues in a friendly and understanding manner, and just a big shout out to them all - you are all amazing :)
raytheon-sentinel I'm going to be dog sitting for the first time next week, a gorgeous cavapoo who will be staying at mine, do you have any tips for me ? Thank you x Also, can't believe dog owners even do some of those things in the first place !
Thank you so much for this! Dog sitting for the first time next week, and I already met with the doggy and his owners, but it's nice to have some extra info going into a first time experience
Im planning on starting my own little 1-2 person pet sitting business for my neighborhood because I am good with animals. Im 12 yrs old but have big dreams! Wish me luck!
I am taking care of my neighbor's dog and cars. Just be friendly, take dogs on walks, respect them, and be careful around cats. The cats have already bitten me, scratched me, and hissed at me. I'm only two days in but the dog is great. I love taking care of animals. The only neighbors in my neighborhood that know me are them and one other person so a pet sitting business is a little short lived.
I would also add that when I watch people's pets, I always have a document that says in need of emergency I can take animal to (this) vet, and if in emergency spend (this) amount of money on vet care. Or, if their is an emergency do not take to vet etc.. This is a lifesaver literally! and it helps ease the mind of owners and you if you cannot reach the owner and something happens. :)
Michael Cortez hi! This was a year ago ,...but I’d love to tell you how it went... we had a really good time! Bailey (the dog - Mini poodle cross sheepdog 😍😉) cried a little during the first night but for me, I expected much more of a fuss and he went to sleep pretty easily. Since then, we have often dog sat him and are about to take on a new cockatoo called Rodney who I absolutely cannot wait to have in my home for a few days. If you need any advice, I’d be happy to help!
A great video, Thanks. I have gained a lot of experience pet sitting in the last few years. On a day to day basis ( and for short trips away) my housemates and I keep an eye on each others animals (17 ferrets, 3 cats and 2 rats) and we always leave detailed instructions if we are going away for more than 1 night. I also critter sit for a local ferret/exotic animal rescue, that's a much bigger task and is more similar to what your interns must go through as on top of 60 ferrets there are raccoons, skunks, dogs, cats, jerboa and a chameleon amongst others. I volunteer there on a regular basis so I am already familiar with the animals and they are used to me. It's the little things like knowing which of the cats doesn't like new people and that one raccoon doesn't like being picked up that really help. I always feel honoured that they would trust me to look after all of the animals.
Oh lord. Remember to introduce yourself around the dog's owner, guys. I remember that I had a friend who took in this giant hound mutt from outside. He was a BEAUTIFUL dog, and I remember walking into her house for the first time after she got him and this dog went into attack mode IMMEDIATELY. He growled and threw a fit, and the SECOND she walked into the room, this dog tackles me and starts licking me and having a great time. I've never seen such a night-and-day reaction like that before, but it was a little scary to have this growling dog suddenly leap on me. Always always have the owner there for big or aggressive dogs.
I'm thinking about starting a small pet sitting job for over the summer. In the past, I've petsat: 2 different dogs(they were so sweet) 2 birds(parakeets, they were fun) 5 ducks (they were adorable) and hedgehog (he didn't like me but we built a good relationship). They were all great. I also have a dog and hedgehog. I'm hoping to try to convince my parents to let me do this, and to get business (I don't ever do anything over the summer😶) so wish me luck with this! And good luck to anybody starting up!
You helped me so much thank you so much! I am 15 and going into the animal career. I'm thinking of becoming an animal behaviorist and I could really use your channel to help me out :) new subscriber! Plus I am becoming a pet sitter and dog walker to prepare me for the furture and this was awesome for that thank you!
I haven't got a dog and have never had a dog. Yet someone is giving me their cavapoo next week to dog sit. Follow your dreams, find experience by looking after and walking friends and family's dogs. On your resume you could put that you'd LOVE to have a dog, but can't because of (your reason). If you put it the right way, potential customers may relate to you, and understand that you do actually like dogs but just can't have one, so instead, you dog sit. That will make them more willing to use your services! Hope this helps
Good video! My peach faced lovebird is an "only child" so he actually prefers company over being in a familiar place. When I'm gone he stays with my parents who take him out daily and let him shoulder perch. I'm not even sure he misses us much.
How come it's so important to say "Montana" after Animal Wonders all the time? Is Animal Wonders some sort of multinational chain with branches everywhere, and this is just the Montana branch? Otherwise what are you trying to differentiate from? Is there an Animal Wonders Buenos Aires that I can go visit? :D
We founded Animal Wonders at almost exactly the same time as a business in the state of Missouri that goes by the same name. We're a non profit though and to distinguish between them we added Inc. to our name. That was fine until 6 years later we took our adventure onto UA-cam where they had already claimed the name Animal Wonders. So we just added the Montana. No chain or big funding or international locals, just little us trying to do what we do and make a positive change in the world :)
Okay, so we have a dog and we really don't like keeping him on a chain and he didn't used to have to be on one but he climbs the fence if he isn't on one now, one time we opened the gate to take him on a walk, he ran out but then turned around ran back in the yard a climbed over the fence. We really want to stop him from getting out because he got out and was lost for a week once and he is a black and white dog, mostly black though and we want him to be safe and happy so any advice would be wonderful.
Light Yagimi teach him that going over the fence is wrong. Let him go there, with you behind him, and when he tries to get over, firmly say no and pull him away when he is safely away, give him a treat. Take him to the fence the next day and try again. He will likely try to get over again, but repeat the actions. Try this again and again until when he goes to the fence, he will look back at you and finally understand that it is wrong. If all else fails, you could always getting a bigger fence or adding to the top of the one you have now. Hope this helps !
Cats, if they're being kept in the petsitters house should be confined to a single, cat proofed room. This is important to make sure they feel secure, you don't lose them, and they don't try and run back home.
Yesterday I had a small incident with my pet, my grandmother let some rat poison in her house, I was not sure if my Dog had actually eat any, but I was worried sick, I was on brink of tears all day. All safe measures taken, and she is ok.
I've had to take care of my friend's parent's 2 cats as well as their reptile (in their own home). The hardest part was dealing with the live crickets. Ew. The reptile was nocturnal, so I she stayed under the rock shelter every time I was there. So I just let her be. One of the cats was very old, and very friendly, so I could sit there and pet her all day and she wouldn't move from that spot until I stopped. She was also one of those cats that only liked drinking water if it was running from the sink. The other cat I think I saw once while there cause she is afraid of everyone, so she hid. So I only hung out at the place for about 30 minutes after all the feeding was done. That way the other cat would come out and be able to eat.
I had to go on a business trip this summer, and had to leave my cat alone for a week. I live in the same city as my brother, but I actually asked his girlfriend to pet sit, since my cat is unreasonably afraid of my brother (he just has a really deep voice). Luckily, the cat was cool to stay at my apartment, and she came by everyday to refresh food and water, and make sure the cat hadn't gotten herself stuck in a kitchen cabinet.
We currently have kittens, and I'm keeping one of them. The mother is staying with my dad when I move out. If I need to have someone cat sit, and I can't find anyone to do it at my place, would it be better to leave her with my dad and the mother cat than someone else? or someone without a cat? Does it matter at all? Also, I was wondering what your views are on the age at which to separate kittens/puppies/other pets from there mothers. We've gone with 15 weeks for the 4 kittens that are being adopted, which is supposed to be pretty late, but I've read a lot of contradictory information on this, so I don't really know what's reasonable anymore.
***** Hey! I'm a foster carer for animals who've been abandoned and I've taken care of lots of litters of puppies and kittens! Usually, they are separated from their mother and litter at around 8 weeks, at which point they should also be fully weaned. You can of course keep them with the litter for longer, but keep in mind that certain kittens can bond very closely over this time, and it can be harder and more stressful on them when they are eventually separated. Hope this helps!
Immifer this is also info I've read, but other sources say something completely different. I've also read that the kittens need those extra weeks to learn to play carefully with their siblings and that taking them away from their mothers before 12 weeks makes them more prone to nervous ticks and weird behavior. The mother cat who did stay with her mother for a long time does not have any weird ticks, not even kneading. The kittens are also not fully weaned yet (they're 12 weeks old now), and I feel like interfering would just disturb the natural way of things. On top of that, we have 2 kittens who had recurring issues with worms, so they're a lot smaller than the rest (but catching up now, thankfully). So I can't imagine 8 weeks to be nearly long enough (even though it seems to be the standard many use), but 15 might be too long. Anyway, it won't matter much for these kittens, in about 2 weeks they will have one more vaccination and check up before they can go to their new homes, but I would still like to know what's best.
I'm not really sure what else to say. I'm just speaking from experience :) staying with the litter does help with socialization, but they are learning these skills from around 3 weeks old. Kneading is completely normal for cats at any age, btw :)!
Immifer oh I dont mean your arguments aren't really good, they are, I'm just trying to figure out if there are other arguments, or if there is new research, so I decided to ask here. Because 8 weeks is what everyone used to do, but there was a lot of media attention on new research that said 8 weeks was too short, and I know catteries keep the kittens way longer (14-16 weeks). But I don't know if that new research is super reliable or what the catteries base this long period on. I was wondering what Jessie thinks about this issue.
Jessi, would you have any tips for people like me who need to use dog kennels and catteries when going away? I don't have anyone that could look after my dog and two cats, so this seems like my best option!
Immifer The main thing is to get them vaccinated for kennel cough! A lot of places will probably require this anyway. Make sure to talk to your vet and arrange for any necessary vaccinations to be done before you go. They might even be able to recommend a good kennel for your dog and cats. There are even some places where the person who runs it keeps the animals with them in their own home - that might be your best option if you can find one. :) Otherwise, a lot of the same tips apply. make sure they have their bed from home (or something with your scent on it), write down instructions for their care (especially if they have any medications or special needs), provide emergency contact numbers for your vet and anyone who might be familiar with your pets' care (in case something happens or you can't be reached), and make sure they have one or two of their own toys with them and enough of their regular food to last until you come back.
Question: My significant other and I will be making a cross country move in the next 6 weeks. Due to costs, we have decided to drive the 1800 miles to our new city. This will likely take us 2-3 days. What are you recommendations for traveling by car for very long distances with 2 adult cats?
Our cat is a ragdoll, a breed which is very social. We feel it's better to bring him to my parents-in-law for a week while we are away instead of just having someone come in once a day for a few minutes, because we're worried he'd get lonely (I currently stay at home a lot of the time, so he isn't used to being alone at all). I was wondering if this is the right course of action, since you said cats should be cared for in their home?
There are always exceptions to the rules, always. If your cat is comfortable at the other house and not hiding or trying to run away, then continue taking them. Especially if socialization is high priority.
+Cluisanna Ragdolls are the dogs of the cat world no matter what anyone says. They're the friendliest of all breeds and thrive on regular social interaction. Unless you can get someone to live in your house taking the cat elsewhere is the best course of action.
Thank you so AnimalWonders Montana!.Watched 4:17.I do in home business pet sitting.Q:Don't have liability insurance. It is imperative that I obtain one?
Does the recommendation for small mammals being cared for in the petsitter's home include rabbits? They need a lot more space for exercise than other small mammals, and I'm torn on the compromise for the petsitter's convenience--not having to come to my house once or twice a day would be a plus, but not if she destroys their couch, you know?
As a former owner of four guinea pig boys, my tip for guinea pigs is that you can move them to the pet sitters home, but do NOT put the cage in a busy area. Gunea pigs are sensitive to stress and are easily spooked. If there are other animals in the pet sitter's home, let the guinea pigs get used to them. Especially cats and dogs might see the piggies as prey, so never leave the piggies alone with cats or dogs (my parents' cat was afraid of my guinea pigs and my sister's dog was scared as well, so that worked great, but I never let them run outside the cage if I wasn't in the room with them).
Hello Jess! I need advise! I want to start pet sitting and I don´t know anything about that. I do have a dog and he is 13 years old, so I know a little. But if you can give me like 5 more important things you should know or do to be a pet sitter I would love it. THANK YOU (I speak spanish, sorry if my english is not good).
Jessi, I have a dog and a guinea pig. They are both male. My dog constantly tries to cuddle with him and loves to lick him as if he were cleaning him. Is this some sort of fatherly instinct?
Can you please do a rat video on how to take care of them I will be getting two rats and I want to know the facts from one of my top favorite you tubers
I am always scared out of my mind when I petsit older animals with health issues. It would feel so horrible to have them die in your care. My neighbor's dog died about a month after I had petsit her. (She was 15 years old)
I'd like to add: know if the animal has any food sensitivities. If someone wanted to give a dog one of their own dog treats, that could be a problem for that particular dog.
During the month of July I went out on vacation for just 3 days! My dog had to stay back and because of her heart problems she takes a lot of Medicine, you can only imagine the size of the note... Or should I say the epistle that I left for the sitter! Hahaha
There is somthing you can buy for them for ever how long your be away its food that flots to the bottum on the tank But if you feel the need to have a pet sitter come over and feed them and check to see if they are ok thats fine to
my parents bought these huge food and water dispensers for the dogs but they are really crappy don't buy them water dispenser: hair and dirt stay in the water for a long time, really hard to refill food dispenser: food will become stale
Hey Jessie! love your channel and Animal wonders for the education it gives. Have you done or could you do a video of Fostering/adopting rescue animals tips?
Know what the owner feed their pet and follow their instructions. Visit the pet at the owner's home, so the pet gets used to you. If you are a new pet sitter and need more gigs, register at www.wetcrow.com and add an offer for pet care. Make sure you have a place for the pet to run around, or prepare to walk them twice a day. Unlike at the owner's home, you can not let the pet out on their own for bathroom breaks. I would walk the pet at the owner's home first, to get the pet used to you.OK. I am mainly talking about dogs. I have no advice on snakes, alligators, etc.
From a veterinary point of view, the description of normal behaviours is so important! If something goes wrong and the animal needs to go to the vet, it makes it easier for us to diagnose.

She was also one of those cats that only liked drinking water if it was running from the sink. The other cat I think I saw once while there cause she is afraid of everyone, so she hid. So I only hung out at the place for about 30 minutes after all the feeding was done. That way the other cat would come out and be able to eat.
this was VERY helpful!!! thank you!!!
I'm looking after a budgie, he is really cute
Take them to Dr. Acula only if there are no open cuts. ;)
Thanks
Hi Jessi! I was wondering if you guys had budgies and if so do you know any ways to keep birds like budgies healthy and happy in an aviary? Thanks!
I want to start dog and cat sitting but idk what to do with the animals like playing and such
We currently have kittens, and I'm keeping one of them.
Otherwise, a lot of the same tips apply. make sure they have their bed from home (or something with your scent on it), write down instructions for their care (especially if they have any medications or special needs), provide emergency contact numbers for your vet and anyone who might be familiar with your pets' care (in case something happens or you can't be reached), and make sure they have one or two of their own toys with them and enough of their regular food to last until you come back.
Immifer I would say most of the same tips apply :) I would just add in that you probably take their vet records and immunization records with them.
Dr. Acula. Love the pun. xD
As always, great video :D
Very timely!
This is such a great idea for a video!
thank u for the tips!
Cómo le hago en las referencias???
MOST HELPFUL. other sites claimed to be starting businesses. I was just looking fro tips for success for temp. pet-sitting.
Can you do a video on how to teach common house pets simple tricks
This helped me so much I going to be babysitting my cousins baby puppy ♥️
Hello Jess! I need advise! I want to start pet sitting and I don´t know anything about that. I do have a dog and he is 13 years old, so I know a little. But if you can give me like 5 more important things you should know or do to be a pet sitter I would love it.
THANK YOU
(I speak spanish, sorry if my english is not good).
My body is ready. Now all I need is someone's pet to pet-sit and friends
Rudy gets up at 6am start her day
How do I make a bed for a my budgie please answer or vid thanks you are my idol
I am always scared out of my mind when I petsit older animals with health issues. It would feel so horrible to have them die in your care. My neighbor's dog died about a month after I had petsit her. (She was 15 years old)
I’m supposed to pet sit my cousins 5week old rockweiler and I’m scared that I’ll end up doing something wrong 😭
Loved the Scrubs reference!
i love your hair jessie
One of my dogs looks just like Ruby!
I live in Montana
I'd like to add: know if the animal has any food sensitivities. If someone wanted to give a dog one of their own dog treats, that could be a problem for that particular dog.
Great video :-)
During the month of July I went out on vacation for just 3 days! My dog had to stay back and because of her heart problems she takes a lot of Medicine, you can only imagine the size of the note... Or should I say the epistle that I left for the sitter! Hahaha
Man, i really want to work with animals... but I never had the grades for it
I prefer Dr. Emdee or Dr. Dorian
What about pet fish?
There is somthing you can buy for them for ever how long your be away its food that flots to the bottum on the tank But if you feel the need to have a pet sitter come over and feed them and check to see if they are ok thats fine to
Girl did you have coffee before filming this lol
my parents bought these huge food and water dispensers for the dogs but they are really crappy don't buy them
water dispenser: hair and dirt stay in the water for a long time, really hard to refill
food dispenser: food will become stale
Hey Jessie! love your channel and Animal wonders for the education it gives.
Have you done or could you do a video of Fostering/adopting rescue animals tips?
3:00 for pet sitters
I really enjoyed your video except I didn't absorb everything from it because instructions were too fast. Great video though!
YOU WENT TO VID CON
I want to be a pet sitter, how do I do that? I'm 16.
chaotic good
I’ve got a dog as had other pets in 14 and need some money I’m thinking £10 an hour and working near where I live
Who is the one guy who dislikes every video for the most part
you should do a video on pet rats or rodents
Cn I take care of your pet???????????????!!!!!!!!!
