Retake means it's not a straight up cover, it's a whole new take on a song (or two songs in this case). Ren's own rap in the middle, yeah :) it was filmed over Christmas last year.

Took just 10 days from initial song concept to completed video. Filmed in a pub in Brighton (perfect decor !) they had just 2 hours to complete the filming. Filmed by the brilliant Samuel Perry-Falvey
Yes, I think everyone agrees that more Ren singing and, with this combo would be delightful. This entire song is a vibe.
In an incredible BTS available on Ren’s Patreon, this project came together in 10 days from concept to filming in December when Ren was back in the UK for the holidays. Kai is one of Ren’s close friends who typically helps film and upload the BTS to Patreon, but it was great to see him on bass! I agree I would love to see this ensemble do more together!
The first rehearsal with the lovely ladies (Sylvia and Scarlett) was 2 days before the video shoot. Their blend together is so lush. Ren did a fantastic job in post-production mixing to make sure the balance made each of them shine.
They only had a few hours at the bar in Brighton to film. Samuel Perry-Falvey yet again did a beautiful job filming. A lot of credit goes to Ren’s core group of friends that help turn Ren’s visions into reality.
Ren’s voice and style is perfectly suited to Sting/The Police. I agree, I initially was hoping to hear more of Message in a Bottle, but I loved the way he incorporated the guitar riff into Back on 74. And the rap interlude was all Ren. Sometimes Ren will choose songs to cover for their lyrical connection, but I think he was drawn to the Jungle “Back on 74” for the vibe. And I’m glad, because I this ensemble might not have come together otherwise!
What amazes me is how different each of Ren’s recent projects have been! I can’t wait for the new album he’s working on!

You have not heard much of Ren's work if you think the rap bars were not Ren's typical work. Not only were there lots of clues to the very familiar nature of some of the bars, but he said at the start that naughty bars are his specialty. Those who have listened to a number of Ren's songs will readily attest to that!! The bit near the end of the rap part was also a Ren trademark, with the bit about money and power... Ren gave a shout out to the originators, Jungle who first performed (a faster) dance version of this last year. He also hints at the Nas retake which he released the week after this.

As you're talking about the camera shot, notice that yeah Ren is barely in the shot, but also the 'background' singers are in the foreground. Like he wanted them highlighted and doesn't care about his own glory.
Notice also, he lowers his volume to blend in with them, rather than overpower them and push them to the back of the mix.
A very Ren thing to do.
I also notice that he's smiling so much, because he's genuinely having fun.
I don't know if he doesn't care about his own glory, he gives himself plenty of time to shine and take centre stage in other parts of the video. As he should.
They're rens rap lyrics. "First my specialty, naughty bars" ren likes to throw in stuff people don't expect
The diversity of his material, vocal range and mixing abilities are fantastic.

The bass player is Kai. He is Ren's friend/assistant who usually shoots the BTS videos. The backing singers are Sylvia Mwenze and Scarlett Fae. They all did a great job

Such a vibe with a bassist who takes chill to a new level.
Think most of your questions have been answered by others. This was filmed last December when he went back to Brighton for Christmas. He also recorded 2 new songs with Chinchilla and with Ruby J, so he was busy 😂. Ren has always said Sting is one of his biggest vocal influences together with Jeff Buckley. Also, Ren is a huge Chilli Peppers fan and John Frusciante is his musical idol 😂😂

Ren rap lyrics. It fits in his rap patterns. Back on 74 by Jungle. Surely you recognize the Police.
Back on 74, a Jungle song, and it's nice how Ren changes it and what he takes from it. Message in a bottle riff introduced in the Back on 74 part. The rap is Ren's but he links it to Back on 74 by incorporating elements from Back on 74 in the girls singing part, in the beginning and the end of the rap. Then we finally have Message in a Bottle from the Police and the girls sing an response from Back on 74 here, when Ren sings "Sending out an S.O.S" , the same phrase that he sang to them in Back on 74 part or "Let it go". All very nice and so good.
Those bars are definitely all Ren

Great reaction video as always..... I like the way you pick up on the little subtleties in the music/singing or video. Things that i would overlook, highlighting that they are deliberate choices that Ren made when making this song..... The tie and shirt are also in Money Game 3...... I could tell you really enjoyed this. Ren looking fit as ever. Beautiful venue and that vibe from Kai the bass player is so chill. The rap lyrics are all Ren and very much like Ren's typical rap style. He is a cheeky lad and loves fellatio bars. :D

I always worry that reactors suffer from whiplash listening to Ren. 😊 This went from concept to film in ten days when Ren was home last Christmas. Samuel Perry-Falvey directed. They had two hours before the bar opened for business. Ren is wearing most of his bespoke suit from "Money Game 3", which I don't think you've seen yet. So much to unpack in one song. A great reaction and you should watch the original Back On 74 by Jungle it is awesome and very well done. The first part of this was from the original, Ren wrote the rap verse, followed by far too little, I agree, of Message In A Bottle. Thanks again Izzy!

Done over Chridtmas holidays when Ren wrnt home. 10 days from conception to performance. The rap is his own and stitches together the 2 songs. BACK ON 74 by Jungle just released 2023. He added sounds of Message inro the Back on 74 part, i heard it!
Ren is a big fan of the Police and has many vocal and range similarities to Sting.
The Big Push covered Englishman in New York . Ren does great in that!
I really think Ren's voice has matured into something even more amazing than what it was. Is it presumptuous of me to hear/feel the healing in his voice? He has been in treatment for 14 months now.
Kai on base is family. He is in charge of Ren's Patreon and this is the first track I've seen him play with Ren. I thought they all did great! The ladies are local Brighton Singers. Scalett Fae has her own page i know. Saw her performing on it with Sylvia at least once.

You should react to a Primus song. Les Claypool slaps the heck out of his bass and it sounds amazing. It's actually the lead instrument in the band while guitar takes the traditional secondary bass role. Other than Primus I agree with you but slap bass can be done right and Primus is a great example.
