Love your intro for Comic Sunday. You took me back to 1977 when I was one of those purchasing the comic before seeing the movie. Also purchased the novelization which if I remember correctly came out before the movie as well. Star Wars changed everything in movies, merchandise and science fiction and fantasy. For the good or the bad? That’s the classic debate.
I think the changes were good shortly after Star Wars (the blockbuster multi-channel marketing). But then went too far in the decades after.... Thanks for checking it out Richard!
I used to have copy of the Treasury edition, definitely a Marvel trial of the graphic novel format (which ironically, Chaykin did quite a few of in late 70s/early 80s). Great stuff!
Love the new intro, Grammaticus! This is history that I was unaware of. Of course, Marvel came close to crashing in the 90's as well. I blame that on greed. Anyway, that Special Edition really does make Chaykin's work pop!
Great overview and context for the Star Wars comic. That's also a great comparison of what a difference the format--standard vs larger, special edition--makes for the art.
Since I have several Treasury Editions, and the larger format did nothing for them, I was amazed at how much better Chaykin's work looked when expanded! Thanks for checking it out Seth!
Great vid! Your topic choices always seem to align (or influence) my reading plan. I just started the Star Wars 2015 run a few weeks ago. Soooo good. Keep up the content and I hope all is going okay on the home front.
It's kicking around in the basement somewhere. It always amazes me how your bookshelves are like looking into a mirror of my own. I think Churchill said the measure of a man's intelligence is how much he agrees with you. You are clearly a genius.
Very interesting. We lived overseas in May of 77 when this was published and returned in August of 77. My recollection is that Star Wars came out after August. There was a lot of hype. A quick glance at Wikipedia convinces me I’m neither right nor wrong. I suppose it didn’t come to my city until August. My parents would buy us Archie comics once in a while as a treat. We certainly didn’t get any super hero magazines, my parents didn’t like that stuff. By 1977 we were old enough to buy what we wanted, but I guess none of my siblings or I ever developed a taste for the super heroes. Still haven’t. We were also too old to want to read Archie anymore. (I was in 9th grade by then.) I don’t remember the Star Wars comics, but there were lots of comics based on movies back then, as I recall.
That all dove tails nicely with the trends and releases Skyler! The initial release would have been very limited (movie). Amazes me that the comic sold that well before the film even hit the theatres.
Really interesting history! I didn't know the comic came out before the movie! I wonder why it sold so well. Did they hype it up a bunch? Was the zeitgeist just ready for space adventure?
I always assumed that the artists would draw at least half or more larger, and the pictures would then be reduced for the actual comic. At least some of the more detailed ones like Marvel as opposed to Archie.
That is exactly right Kathy! The original sheets are right around the Treasury Sized editions. But then reduced for newstand comics (allowing the artist to more easily draw details). It really amazed me how much better Chaykin's work looked in an expanded format though.
I never got into comics...but I do have an obsession with the original illustrated pulp versions of classic science fiction stories...😂🤣 I'm tempted by these comics...Luke as a Sith?! (Red Lightsaber). 😛🐶. Obviously a mistake. 🙄🙄 Oh, HAN SHOT FIRST! 🎉❤
The 2015 reboot of course, had a gazillion variant covers, and the number was accomplished by flooding those variants to loot crate type of subscriptions and other ancillary promotions. Marvel sold those next to nothing to these services. The rebooted comic did not have the same financial impact as the original series.
It’s hard to believe but there was a time when we couldn’t get enough of Star Wars.
Right?!?!
Now we just get a bunch of junk that’s contaminated by someone else’s agenda

Thanks Stewart and thanks for checking it out!
I miss collecting silver/bronze age comics, and videos like this make me want to get back into it. Hmm, do I need ANOTHER thing to collect?
Yes!!! ....and then make videos of it!
Stellar video. Loved Marvel's SW comics. Those issues from 1977-86 hold a special place in my heart. That was my SW.
Those were great comics Bob! Thanks for checking out the video!

Thanks KDJ! And yeah all their crossover shenanigans in the 90s bit them in the butt.

Thanks James. We started immunotherapy last week. Fingers crossed.
Fingers crossed.
I had the Star Wars treasury editions and read them about a million times. Nice intro by the way.
Thanks Michael! And the intro was inspired by your Mythos Monday and Conan intros...which are great!
This was neat to hear about. Thank you.
Thanks for checking it out Time Travel!

Hard to argue with Winston!!!
I remember saving my money to get that comic in 1996 since I was a big star wars fan great movie adaptation
If you still have it Doc it's worth a lot more now! .... as long it doesn't look as beat up as mine!
@@GrammaticusBooks I do
Interesting as always. Do you think you'll cover War comics?
I actually own very few war comics. A couple Sgt Rocks and some Unknown Soldier. And that’s it. I’d say it’s unlikely. But not impossible!
Forget Splinter of the Mind's Eye, the Expanded Universe begins here!
Also, your thumbnail game is strong - I just had to find out what was saved!
😁
Thanks Smiler! I try and improve things as I go!
Thank you!
You are most welcome MC!
Dig the fancy new opening.
Glad you like it Krommer!

I was wondering the same thing. I'm guessing commercials and pre release hype.

I like the intro!!
Thanks Mark!
I owned that comic! I had it mint along with all my X-Men and Silver Surfer. Good times!
Surprisingly, it's actually a pretty good comic! Thanks for checking it out WowBagger!

Oh, HAN SHOT FIRST! 🎉❤
Yes, Han did shoot first! And yeah, I'm guessing the red light saber is on oversight...or maybe that wasn't cannon yet?

Ahh...variant covers...the start of the end of serious comics.....
