  • In the long lineup of fictional hard-boiled detectives, Philip Marlowe stands out as one of the earliest and best. Raymond Chandler's creation first reached print in the early 1930s, then went on to memorable adaptations in film, television, and of course radio. "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" had a solid four-year run of well over 100 episodes on CBS. Still, a handful of recordings are lost today.
Now Project Audion recreates one of these missing episodes - "The Quiet Number" - directly from the original script, exactly seventy-five years after it was broadcast. "The Quiet Number" wasn't penned by Chandler, but we meet the son of the man who wrote this and most of Marlowe's other radio adventures. Then our transcontinental voice cast performs this gritty story of lost love in a hot Los Angeles summer via a live transcription that sounds just like 1949. Our versatile voice actors were:
    Andy Hartson-Bowyer in Virginia
    Richard Durrington in Idaho
    Gary Layton in Texas
    Lothar Tuppan in California
    Kristen James in Nevada
    Holly Adams in New York
    Kyle Bonn in Oregon
Larry Groebe produced and directed from Texas

I remember so radio dramas from when I was a kid in the early 1950s. I still enjoy listening to them, especially the hard boiled private eyes.

Beyond belief, what a gift, thank you all so much. I have listened so many times to all the Marlow radio shows, did not expect this. Are there any missing Rocky Jordan shows??

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I think there are some Rocky Jordan scripts for which no recordings exist. We may have one in our archives - if so, that could make a good future broadcast! Sp stay tuned...

Back in 2002, I was listening to a Greeley (CO), talk radio on my former Marantz stereo receiver on the hill of 111th & Pinyon Dr ( approx Bannock St) in Northglenn ( a north burb of Denver founded in 1960, established in 1968) on 1310 KFKA.
An older radio DJ/ talk show host, Dick Williamson was doing a 4 hour OTR program on Sunday night using a compilation of various radio programs.
He's show name "Radio Memories" is still used, but not actually hosted by the now retired host & Methodist minister.
On Oldies format, and different owned, sister stations KELS 95.3 in downtown Greeley and different call letters further NW in Ft Collins/ Loveland, both using the " Pirate" moniker.
In 2002, Dick also had a KFKA Radio Players small community/ radio staff actors group.
One then DJ/ Talk host had moved to local #1 Oldies Pirate radio in Greeley by 2012, George Gray, the morning weekday host, who started a sideline as " George Gray's Elvis Experience ( w a local band/ backup vocalists.

Cantonese duck with almonds sounds pretty good. I thought 1949 Chinese food would all be chop suey. Now I'm hungry for Noir Chinese takeout.

Glad you noticed the music - to make it good and authentic like this we use a wide range of techniques. We pull tracks out of the original shows whenever we can, and archive.org has a vast library of old library music on 78rpm recordings if you know how to dig for it. For the "Marlowe" show we ended up mixing various cuts together, and sometimes adding a little organ and/or timpany and/or cymbals to blend it well.
