"Romance: Pride & Prejudice" live recreation of 1947 romantic-comedy audio drama
For fourteen years beginning in 1943, the CBS Radio network brought its listeners "Romance" - an anthology of half-hour love stories both classic and new, serious and comic. A story like Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" would seem to be a particular challenge to condense to a single half-hour, but Romance captured the essence of the tale in a brisk, highly entertaining adaptation that was performed three times during the show's long run. The vintage mid-century recordings sound muddy and are not always well cast, so it became an ideal candidate for Project Audion to recreate. Enjoy the classic love match of Miss Bennet and Mr Darcy in this streamlined "Pride and Prejudice," recorded live in the authentic 1940s manner, but via Zoom using voice actors spread across the country. Our cast:
Donna Patton in Tennessee
Tom Konkle in California
Jane Beverley in New Jersey
Richard Durrington in Idaho
Laura Mirsky in New jersey
Greg Vestal in Texas
and Les Marsden in California
Larry Groebe handled production, direction, and music and sounds.

"Phil Harris/Alice Faye Show" new recreation of classic Golden-Age radio comedy series
Переглядів 132День тому
In terms of sheer fun and laughter during radio's classic mid-century era, it's hard to beat the Phil Harris/Alice Faye show. A spinoff from Jack Benny, bandleader Phil Harris and his family found themselves in classic sitcom predicaments week after week. Now, Robert L. Mills, former writer for Bob Hope, has created another fresh script that brings all those characters including Frankie Remley,...
"Matinee with Bob & Ray" - tribute recreation of classic radio comedians

Project Audion invites you to some light summer fare: an Audion Original "Matinee with Bob & Ray." This is Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding like you've never heard before, because it's made of fresh sketches in tribute to "The Two and Only." For those who are NOT intimately familiar with Biff Burns, Komodo dragons, or the Slow Talkers of America, the comedic duo of Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding was ...
"Philip Marlowe" live recreation of lost 1949 episode from classic noir detective radio drama
Переглядів 5 тис.2 місяці тому
In the long lineup of fictional hard-boiled detectives, Philip Marlowe stands out as one of the earliest and best. Raymond Chandler's creation first reached print in the early 1930s, then went on to memorable adaptations in film, television, and of course radio. "The Adventures of Philip Marlowe" had a solid four-year run of well over 100 episodes on CBS. Still, a handful of recordings are lost...

"Suspense: The Life of Nellie James" recreation of lost 1942 classic audio drama
Переглядів 4504 місяці тому
Suspense is one of classic radio's most highly-regarded dramas with good reason. It sustained a remarkably high quality level of dramatic tension for 20 years, as the many surviving recordings attest. But a handful of episodes are lost - and Project Audion now recreates one of them. "The Life of Nellie James" was intended as Suspense's premiere, but circumstances pushed it back to the third epi...

A spy caper always makes for a good show. Start with a suave man of mystery, sprinkle in some far-off exotic locales, and stir in some evil enemies of democracy and beautiful women. The result: James Bond? No, "The Man Called X" which broadcast several hundred episodes on network radio from 1944 through 1952. Unflappable British actor Herbert Marshall originally played American agent Ken Thurst...

The "Damon Runyon Theatre," a syndicated radio series from 1949 relating stories of New York's "guys and dolls" mobsters and dames, gamblers and frails, saints and sinners which newspaperman and sportswriter Damon Runyon colorfully brought to life in decades of short stories. The first woman executed for murder in the United States was hanged in 1778. In 1953 her shocking tale of love, hate, conspiracy, and murder was brought to life in the audition script for a new CBS radio drama series - "Crime Classics." Crime Classics was a sort of mid-century predecessor to today's true-crime podcasts. The audition episode, titled "The Crime of Bathsheba Spooner," featured som...
"Mystery In The Air" Tribute recreation in the style of 1947 Peter Lorre audio drama

Peter Lorre is an actor with such a distinctive voice and presence that even now, 60 years after his death, he's still instantly identifiable. It's surprising he didn't do more radio dramas, but he did host and star in "Mystery In The Air" in 1947. As a summer replacement show, there were only 17 episodes, and only 8 or so recordings exist so Project Audion asked Pete Lutz to create a NEW Myste...

In the late 1940s and early 1950s the Phil Harris-Alice Faye radio series was a masterclass in radio comedy. Wow! Original B&R routines in the year 2024? I’m very surprised-and a bit skeptical. However, I’ve heard Lutz’s very own Wally Ballou inspired radio routines before, so no doubt does his writing have the spirit! As a B&R diehard, I anticipate the premiere. ;)

Back in 2002, I was listening to a Greeley (CO), talk radio on my former Marantz stereo receiver on the hill of 111th & Pinyon Dr ( approx Bannock St) in Northglenn ( a north burb of Denver founded in 1960, established in 1968) on 1310 KFKA. An older radio DJ/ talk show host, Dick Williamson was doing a 4 hour OTR program on Sunday night using a compilation of various radio programs. He's show name "Radio Memories" is still used, but not actually hosted by the now retired host & Methodist minister. On Oldies format, and different owned, sister stations KELS 95.3 in downtown Greeley and different call letters further NW in Ft Collins/ Loveland, both using the " Pirate" moniker. In 2002, Dick also had a KFKA Radio Players small community/ radio staff actors group. One then DJ/ Talk host had moved to local #1 Oldies Pirate radio in Greeley by 2012, George Gray, the morning weekday host, who started a sideline as " George Gray's Elvis Experience ( w a local band/ backup vocalists.

I gave up on quiet approach after the first couple of steps, the squeaky tenement floors gave me away The room number was 13c. Whoever was in that apartment, knew I was coming. The doors of the place might have been made of paper but disguised as wood, it would have been easier to tear through it but decided I would use the door knob. I listened first, I had to know what I was up against. From the hallway, it sounded like serious discussions was taking place inside the apartment, by an unknown group of people. Almost reminded me of one of those old radio shows they stopped making years ago. I opened the door to a darkened room, bathed in the glow of a computer monitor. In that light was a elderly man, reared back in his chair, legs up, frozen stiff, his eyes glazed open. He was an ordinary looking man in slacks and shirt, no sign of blood, his feet bare. He looked dazed, perhaps a slight smile on his face. I glanced at the computer monitor to see a collection of eight questionable characters displayed. The cause of the 'serious discussions' was indeed a recreation of an old-timey radio show. Walking across to the bathroom to get a wet rag and some water for the gentleman, I saw his two socks, plastered on the wall. The man was slowly coming around, still smiling, repeating 'thank you, oh thank you, thank you. It was magnificent'. He was still a little dazed but coming around. I couldn't put it together at first. A dazed but smiling elderly man, bare feet, the recreation of a radio show playing on his computer. Two socks plastered on the wall. The answer was obvious. The radio show he was listening too was so good, it literally blew his socks off! The gentleman mumbled, saying something about Subscribing. I made a quick note of what he just watched and let myself out the door. I needed a shot of rye. [OK yea I know it sux, relax I'm obviously not a writer, Earth is safe. You guys did a fantastic job, vocals (WOW), production, music, TIMING! Now, I've got to find my other sock.]

Glad you noticed the music - to make it good and authentic like this we use a wide range of techniques. We pull tracks out of the original shows whenever we can, and archive.org has a vast library of old library music on 78rpm recordings if you know how to dig for it. For the "Marlowe" show we ended up mixing various cuts together, and sometimes adding a little organ and/or timpany and/or cymbals to blend it well.

We obtained a scan of the original 1938 script for this show, so what you hear is what was on the page. I can see your point - the abridged script on the LP gets to the heart of the matter (if you will) much quicker. There's an awful lot of cackling laughter in this one. Having now read a number of lost Arch Oboler "Lights Out" scripts, it seems to me he could sometimes come up with a cool hook - "ie: What if we turned someone inside out?" - but then was challenged to flesh out a full half hour of drama from it. (and I'll cut him some slack because of the challanges of writing/casting/producing/directing a new show every week!) In any event, the full version needed doing after all this time.
