Seriously why is Gamma's story so good? I vividly remember as a child snapping to attention as Gamma watched his pit dog brother being dismantled and rebuilt as the literal weapon he is, and the somber tone just letting you take it all in. . . It's like Sonic Heart of Darkness Edition out of fucking no where, it's amazing.
You just walk into a Silent Hill room first level in one of the character's standalone stories in a sonic game. Completely removed from the rest of the game. Was the writer just depressed or ballsy that day is what I wonder.

The story of sonic adventure is in general pretty good. However for as much as i love the english voice cast i have to admit they have gotten a pretty badly done script. The english translation is full of weird errors and stuff like that and the cutscenes dont really help with how they look. If you actually read this i would recommend using the retranslated mod for Sonic Adventure and putting the voices on Japanesse (i am not a weeb i just find it weird to have the english voices with retranslated subtitles on). Same goes for Adventure 2 it has a fantastic story and while it is slightly less broken in translation it still can be a bit rough.

It's really insane, and it frustrates me how youtube people were promoting Full Sail for awhile, and convinced a bunch of impressionable kids that it's the "best place" to get into game development.
If you want to be a game developer then pick up animation or get a degree in programming (or CS if you want to get deeper into things happening more under the hood). If you pick up a skill like that and start making some small games in Unity or Godot or Game Maker for a portfolio, you can absolutely find companies that will want to hire you. I've talked with a couple game local development companies where I live and they consistently bring up that they don't care where you went to school, or your degree or anything like that, they just want good people who are passionate, have so experience with development, and willing to learn what they need to be productive in the company.
The only thing a school like Full Sail might get you is some connections, but even then Digipen is a much better school for that purpose, and it's just not worth dealing with a sketchy institution like that.

Damn, when I saw the runtime I didn't expect it to be this dense. An hour and a half of fully planned and scripted content is reaching matthewmatosis levels of discipline. It was a really entertaining and comfy video and surprisingly funny, though I may just be biased because I think I just have the same sense of humor. Notably, never found myself getting tired or skipping around. Honest to god just sat there for the whole fuckin hour
I've gotta be honest, this might inspire me to start making videos again. I tried a couple of times but just found second-guessing and writer's block to be real killers. On the other hand though this seemed fun as shit to work on and was entertaining to watch from start to finish.
Planning on streaming any more? There was that one time with katamari that was super chill, and then UA-cam went down at the worst possible time for like an entire day. Was sad but kind of hilarious in just how badly timed it was. Anyway streams could be a chill way to just relax with people and play games while you talk about random topics that aren't big enough for their own videos.

    • @RunningShine
      @RunningShine  5 років тому +96

The review was a lot of fun to make! Although it was very tiring and by the end I was definitely ready for it to be over. I wanted to be thorough with this game as I feel like I haven't seen my perspective on it shared too commonly and I wanted to try and articulate as best I could my opinions on it without the strange baggage that people carry around when talking about Sonic games.
Absolutely try working on something you feel passion for, I'm the kind of person who always needs to be busy with something so working on these videos gives me something fun to do after finishing some work on my game or school. You just gotta make sure that what you're making is the kind of content you really want, since writing this review I already know what I want to do next and it will be slightly different than the way this one was structured and I have ideas for improvements already. I think you can try to appeal to an audience of some kind but I think if you do that you'll fall into the second guessing stuff a lot more since you can't be in their heads. Maybe it will take longer to get the recognition you want, but I think if you write something you love and put your heart into you'll eventually get an audience you'll be happy to have, and you'll be actually excited to make content for them and improve at what you do.
Streaming is a lot of fun! I loved doing it last time since I had Post Elvis and Tropics with me to read off the chat and have fun with everybody while talking about interesting stuff, kind of sad you weren't able to be there since I do remember you from the Katamari stream. I'd love to do another one with both of them before I start having to get back on my school work in a week.
      Thanks!

Loved the review, only thing i would have added was touching upon the ending to tails story. I know it would have ruined the bit but seeing tails go from being someone who can't even cross the street without sonic holding his hand to growing a pair and stopping Eggman who's completely done at this point, abandoning the chaos idea and deciding to just nuke the city instead was a really cool growth. And the way Eggman delivered his lines at that point was great too
Watched all your other reviews after seeing this one and it's a great channel, i was left craving more after seeing there was only 5 reviews but seeing the amount of heart, effort and time put into each one it makes sense and I'd say I'm not the only one wishing for more, seeing your views jump from 6k to 190k in just a few videos is amazing, if there's more to come in the future then i definitely look forward to it

This channel appeared in my recommendations as of recent and i was kind of expecting it to be another over inflated video with molasses paced claims and a condescending tone to boot.
Instead, i find a nicely concise analysis, or general thoughts, on a video game from one of my favorite franchises that feel really open for discussion.
I'm really glad you went into some design aspects on how things could work in theory and tried to avoid as much vague terminology as possible when discussing about sonic adventure's design.
It's also cool to see you explain who made what in the game as it gives developers more of a spotlight and shows their talents that could give people a found appreciation for the developer in question. Although i wished it was a bit more consistent cause sometimes you specify on what dev did this and on the other you bring up sonic team without pinpointing what part of sonic team did this portion (i.e programming, art, designers). In despite of that, i enjoyed this video through and through; i am currently studying the ideas of game design to build my own personal indie project that i had been holding onto for a very long time. But i want to start things small and learn the fundamentals before i start working on the project so seeing flow charts and visual examples enlightened me quite a bit. In hindsight and again, good video my guy.

      Thank you!
I'd love to talk about everybody who works in these games, I hate being general and just using the studio blankly, but it can be very hard to figure out who did what at times, especially when it comes to the programmers/engineers. It can be very easy to figure out who did what with something like music because they get credited for not just being musicians, but also what tracks they worked on. Whereas with programmers you don't really know what aspect of the game they were assigned to do, it could be character physics, the logic for menu systems, event flags, collision, and many other things. I know that if I talk about a game in the future that only has one sole programmer though I'll be making sure to refer to them specifically when talking about how a certain aspect might have been programmed.
Also on the topic of game development. My first CS professor gave me a great piece of advice when he said to start solving your problems algorithmically first. That is, make a set of instructions that the computer will go through to solve the issue before writing a single line of code, and once your down articulating and understanding the problems, then start using your engine and language to implement that solution. Doing this has made it possible for me to solve fairly complex problems a lot easier. Also make sure to learn debugging so that when you run into an unexpected bug or error in your game the whole project won't just get screwed. You can get pretty far by just going through the code that you think might be causing the problem and printing variables to the console to see if they're acting right, that usually catches around 90% of any bug I'm having.

Gamma probably isn't the bird, even if the bird powering him has some subconscious connection to him. Not to get all ERM ACHSHUALLY just saying it because it does more for his character if he recognizes that his existence is parasitic and that he's finally allowed to die in peace, fittingly alone after departing from the main cast and completing his mission of liberating his brothers.

Unfortunately, it seems to be the opposite situation. The low level guys are having a hard time finding employment unless they can break into embedded systems or find a gig doing work on Arm processors. The big money and demand at the moment seems to be in high level web frameworks like Node or ASP. A lot of those jobs require basically no low level knowledge, and I guess you don’t technically need that understanding to do the job, but it’s led to a lot of the modern web being full of unoptimized code which is a shame. I’m haven’t looked into the games industry too much since there’s a lot of better industries for doing a day job as a dev, but from what I’ve seen, they seem to care a lot about your portfolio and knowledge of modern engines like Unity and Unreal. Things vary from company to company though, and especially if you want to be a graphics engineer you’re going to need to know how to work with OpenGL in C, and probably Vulkan too if you’re with a cutting-edge company, so there’s still some options out there.
Also I agree with your previous comment, there’s a lot of great games on the Saturn like Bulk Slash or Radiant Silvergun that were lost in obscurity thanks to never being released outside of Japan. I'm surprised at how far Saturn emulation has progressed considering how fucked up the architecture is in that console, hopefully it keeps going so more games can play perfectly and people can discover the fantastic library it has.

@@RunningShine Just looking at coding/programming always intimidated the hell out of me. I was jealous of people who could make sense of it all.
As for the Saturn, I only just last year finally played scenario's 2 and 3 of Shining Force 3. It was a literal dream come true, as ever since I was a kid I lamented that I could never finish the damn game! Even tried learning Japanese in no small part because of it. I remembered always hearing back in the day how Saturn emulators were borked and I'm glad things have come so far. I just need to get Dragonforce 2 up and running now. :P

Honestly, makes me kinda appreciate when a game doesn't have people talking mid-gameplay.
