Randy: Thanks for your commentary. I recently purchased one of these machines on eBay, primarily because it was advertised as "heavy duty"! I need to sew a lot of denim, and other heavier fabrics. It proved to be as you said, "a good little machine", but I had a problem with the sprang that holds the bobbin case not staying in place, allowing the case to move about, with the resultant thread tangling. The info about the "Superpower", as well as the other info was very enlightening. Thanks again! :-)

I owned a variant of this, a Singer Super Elegance with a ton of stitches on it. It may not have been a heavy duty machine, but I managed some pretty heavy projects on it, and did so for almost 20 years. It had (and it drove me bonkers) tension issues that just got so bad I finally only used it for short fast seams as it would go out of adjustment constantly and birdnest. I tried replacing the tension system, but could not source out the parts at the time. Then, the Singer slaughter took place, one night, after sewing kids Halloween costumes until 5 am, I stumbled onto this machine (which I put on the floor like a moron) with the pedal still plugged into the port. Well, what does a plastic port do when you step on it. This was yet another part here in Canada I could not source out, and the machine (I was never told about the ceramic construction, I always thought it was a die cast machine) and I sent it off to it's reward as a parts machine. Damned thing cost me over 500 bucks before tax in 1988, now I know why. It was a dependable machine with lots of feet and features on it for its time, and it was electronic so far as the pedal was concerned, but overall, with the exception of that tensioner assembly (which failed on a lot of these machines, including the wife's, a model she had with less features, and that was a few years older than mine). I'm now kind of understanding why they must have been so failure prone...understanding how they operated. I'm betting a lot of what happened to my own was constantly threading and rethreading it, and tampering with the tension adjustments, etc. Over time, and under duress, I'm guessing the spring action must have gotten a little loose and wreaked havoc on the machine. If it hadn't been for the tensioning issues, and my killing the pedal port (and lack of parts availability for this era of Singer machines here in Canada), I would still be sewing on it, and not my current machines. She loved hers, but got disenchanted for the same reasons I did when I ditched mine...the tension issues.

I just got one of these from a friend and only had to replace the foot. I may have to fix the rewinder, as it's super stiff, but I can't figure out how to get the top off. I wanted to do what I could on my own, but I may need to get it serviced haha.

Put a drop of oil at the base of the bobbin winder as it’s visible from the top. There’s no need to remove the top to oil it.
Get it turning and the oil will work it’s way to where it needs to be.
Once it’s spinning freely, engage it to the hand wheel and start winding bobbins.
      DONT OVER OIL IT.
One or two drops where the axle goes through the bearing will be enough to enable you to start moving it by hand.

I’m a newbie who knows nothing about sewing. I need to shorten the length of a few polo shirts from the crotch area up to just below my waist. Will this sewing machine do the job? Also is there a tutorial on using this sewing machine? It’s just too expensive for a tailor to do this considering my shirts are less than $10 each. Plus, I can do other things with the sewing machine. Thx.

It should be capable of hemming and shortening your shirts.
Be sure to wind the bobbins properly and don’t use a heavy thread. (Use all-purpose thread)
The bobbins are exclusive to that machine, so be sure to use the correct ones.
Put the tension on (4) and be sure to use the proper threading procedure
      ( I have a video on that process )
Get a brand new size 14 Schmetz (stretch) needle for knit fabric.
Install the needle with the flat side facing to the rear. (To the back)
      Good luck. 😎

Any rotating shaft (upper and lower) needs oil where it passes through the carrier bearings.
Anything that rotates, slides, or spins needs a drop of oil occasionally.
Most importantly, the bearing under the rotating hook assembly ( under the bobbin case) needs oil as well.

First make sure that your needle is installed properly.
The flat side of your needle faces to the rear of the machine, away from the operator.
If that doesn’t fix the problem, it’s going to be a timing issue.

The wire clips have to be in the right place.
They’re a pretty straightforward plug and play.
Anything made these days can be defective, so that’s a consideration.
Make sure there’s not a hole (leak) in your tube or foot device.
I put the open end to my skin to see if it will expel air, then I observe whether it will it hold the suction against my skin. Underneath my forearm works.

Many of these machines came with a Singer walking foot in the accessories.
Make sure you have the proper walking foot for your machine.
If your machine uses “slant” sewing feet, make sure your walking foot is for a slant machine also.

The disassembly of the bobbin case area can be a challenge for a novice.
Put a drop of oil on the rotating hook that revolves around the bobbin case.
All the other oiling points involve removing shrouds and covers. It’s complicated.
It would be best, for that model Singer, to take it to a competent professional.👍😎

I started to look around and found this air bubble/bladder thing in the pedal. Could my problem be an air leak in the pedal or a bad transducer?

Make sure that the air tube is tight on the end of the transducer. They can slip off.
If the air bulb has lost its seal or split, they can be replaced easily.
The foot control comes with a new tube if you have to replace it.
