Man, I dug the hell out of this movie! Caught in on late night TV a couple of years ago. Never judge a book by it's cover... or a movie by it's title. I thought it would suck and only watched it for a laugh. Turns out it was a well made horror comedy. Wonders never cease! I was never a big Billy "put a cork in it" Zane fan, but he absolutely owned his role in this one. An under rated gem. Thanks for highlighting it. Hopefully it'll make others check it out.
The seal break was because of the explosion. When he first sealed the mine entrance it had a oppening in a specific shape. When they killed the demon it blew apart that opening and reshaping it, therefore breaking the seal.
But there is a lot of inconsistency with the blood seal. If it only conforms to the entrance, then why don't the demons just punch through the wall and go around the seals? And if a demon's death can break the seal, then why tf wouldn't the collector just intentionally kill one in front of an entrance? Or hell, just light a fire to the building itself. "I know, who makes up all these rules?"
I mean, it was kinda a combination of both. They shot the demon, which broke the seal and cause the whole frame to shatter which totally ruined the seal. It took me a few times watching the movie to even understand what happened. Lol
I must’ve seen this movie a dozen times with my cousin when I was 14 and he was 13. We loved it! We also used to repeatedly watch Evil Dead II, Jason Goes to Hell, and Night of the Living Dead (1990).
Great review, I remember renting this one from the video store, Billy Zane was the highlight in this movie and it stayed faithful to the TV series never taking itself seriously but still having you care for the characters.
Both Billy Zane and William Sadler have also been in the show. Sadler was in the episodes The Man Who Was Death and The Assassin, and Zane was in the episode Well Cooked Hams.
What's funny is i actually did a review of this movie last year (LOVE IT) and... Well, i also included the "Falcon Punch" bit too, though i personally referred to it as "The Falcon Punch from Hell". And Roach shot at the barrier, breaking it in the process. Either way, great film and great review dude. And my favorite line; :Raises stump: "Is that a yes?" "No, that's me giving you the finger asshole!" Loved CCH in this movie.
I grew up watching Tales from the Crypt and I loved it when the made this movie. The perfect blend of horror, action and comedy. This movie was highly underrated!
You missed mentioning that one of the cops is Gary Farmer, another character actor. He was great in the role of "Nobody" in the Jim Jarmusch film Dead Man starring Johhny Depp. I used to think his early line in this film "We didn't see anybody" which would essentially translate as "We saw nobody," was a reference to the former. But it looks like they were released in the same year. CCH Pounder calls the female cat, her character knows is named Cleo, "him" and Pinket says "her" about a second later. How did they not reshoot that?
I agree with you. This movie is awesome and every single actor is well chosen. I never remember Saddler's name but I like seeing a rugged guy like him as a hero instead of some pretty boy. And Jada Pincket is gorgeous. I usually don't care about romantic subplots but honestly those two would have made a charismatic couple.
12:46 Yah well it makes perfect sense from a D&D standpoint. Plenty of spells that stop people from coming into an area unless you try to snipe from from inside the protected zone. Ends the spell. It's a balance issue to stop camping.
It's been years since I saw this movie, but I do remember it being very entertaining. Bravo Brandon on doing another fantastic review - and congrats on getting the good stuff out of the way so you could torture us with the genuine 90s terrors
Awesome review as always bud :) I'm glad to see you throw some praise on this movie, cause it really deserves it. This movie is right up there with House 1985 as one of those really good horror/comedy like film that gets overlooked badly it seems.
Everyone who like Billy Zane performance should watch Curfew TV series. Here Billy is kinda repeat his role, but he is not Demon now, but a part of group of crazy psychologists racing for freedom. He is snarky, funny and clearly enjoying himself.
Oh by the way, awesome review! I agree, this movie is totally underrated. And sadly it doesn't get the attention it deserves. This year is the 20th anniversary of Demon Knight. And believe me, I've known this movie for the past 20 years. I saw it when I was 12 when my brother showed it to me, and I loved it. Too bad there was never a sequel to this film other than the follow up 1996 film Bordello of Blood, which is not a true sequel, but was the second and last film that Tales from the Crypt made. But I didn't like it as much as I liked Demon Knight. For me, Demon Knight is a timeless classic. It may be underrated as hell, and it may have a few problems here and there, but none of these problems prevented it from being a classic.
Amazing movie, killer soundtrack. The credits roll with an original unreleased tune from Machinehead. The OST also featured Sepultura's Policia which was also unreleased at the time and would only be featured on a live album soon after this.
From what I understand, those are the producers who contributed majorly in the growth of Tales from the Crypt while it was on HBO. Therefore, they were granted EP credits for this movie automatically.
Wow, Brandon is being positive! Haven't seen that since the Ray Harryhausen tribute. It's nice to see! Though I'm alsonglad to hear he's "back to being a dick again" in the next episode.
I still think it has been a repeatedly missed opportunity for not casting Zane as Lex Luthor. He does the mix of charm and menace so damn well and has the right baritone voice to boot.
You're right, it is a very underrated movie. Good shit, lots of fun. I was expecting the other classic line from Zoolander: "Listen to your friend Billy Zane. He's a cool guy."

The shot broke it because it is symbolically undoing it since only humans/animals can cross them a shot at it would break it.
Breaking the frame of the door broke the seal, not the demon dying! Well, the demon dying broke the frame, but yanno what I mean.
