The 19.33 Gunnislake to Plymouth (20.18) train, the 8th (of 9) that make the trip daily. 8 years ago today I managed to find and film this crossing • Okeltor Level Crossing The roads here are single track without passing places generally. If one met another car on the hill, someone would have to reverse for a very long way. There have never been gates here so the crossing had existed with just signs for its whole life and it seems to have had a perfect safety record. A Network Rail press release says that they couldn't put barriers in here because the site isn't large enough. Nonsense of course. There are barriers all over tiny sites on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway for example. This line has a 2 hourly train service and there must often be more trains than cars here. What possessed Network Rail to throw away all this money putting lights in? Perhaps the answer lies in NR's own report "Enhancing Level Crossing Safety 2019 - 2029". It is 35 pages long yet it contains the word 'Value' twice, 'Value for money' once and "Cost Effective" not at all.
