  • The marathon returns to the literary realm as Bond takes on Sir Hugo Drax, exclusively on home turf. Set in London and Kent, Ian Fleming's third novel once again rings the changes to ensure that no Bond adventure so far has been the same.
But in this instance, does it result in his very best work?

Someone really needs to sample the strings from the disco version of the 'Moonraker' theme!

This was the first Bond novel I read. I found a random copy of it at a church jumble sale when I was kid. I can’t remember what I thought of it then, but on re-reading as an adult, it’s one of my favourites.

I've always thought that the original Bond novels would make an excellent series on Netflix/Amazon. They would be adjacent to the Eon movies with their own Bond, set in the 50s/60s, accurate to the stripped back plots of the novels etc. Lots of series film all over the world now, so I think it would be achievable on a TV budget.

@@andykey78 I would love to see more faithful adaptations of the books on the correct period, as a sideways step like you said. I doubt it would ever materialise but if it did then I'd be all over it

@@AllyCraig If you're a first time reader of them then it'd be really interesting to hear your thoughts. I think there's a rhythm and tone to tune into with them but it can yield some lovely rewards

You should start these episodes off by saying ‘The name’s born, a nerd reborn’. Haha

I’m not really a Bond fan but I did read the books, in order and at a frenetic pace, up to For your Eyes Only. I really enjoyed them but felt they were getting very silly. The giant squid in Dr No is probably to blame. But Moonraker is the one I remember the least about! Seriously, no recall at all. Maybe worth a re-read after your review 😁

In dr no, it was largely because Fleming was feeling tired of bond and wanted to kill him off (or end it ambiguously) in from Russia with love. But the publishing house and the readers’s reaction had pretty much sealed the deal.

Not read many of the Bond novels but I've read this one and rather liked the Kent setting. Also the way Bond felt dirty when Gala introduces her fiance. As you say, far from the Bond of the films!

That’s the problem. when people think of James Bond they IMMEDIATELY think of the movie version (and rightfully so even though I don’t like him anymore) because of how popular the franchise had become that they forgot the source material and the man he came from.
