  • Ian Fleming's greatest creation, James Bond, has had an enormous and ongoing impact on our culture and all of us as Bond fans. Without Fleming, there is no Bond. What Bond represents about ideas of masculinity, the British national psyche and global politics has shifted over time, as has the interpretation of the life of his author. But Fleming himself was more mysterious and subtle than anything he wrote, and it took one of the most gifted biographers working today to peel away the onion that is Fleming.
In this video I interview Nicholas Shakespeare the author of a new book called Ian Fleming: The Complete Man. His talent for uncovering material that casts new light on his subjects is fully evident in this masterful, definitive biography. His unprecedented access to the Fleming archive and his nose for a story make this a fresh and eye-opening picture of the man and his famous creation.

When David is not running an advertising and marketing company, his hobby is The Bond Experience which is primarily a video blog where he discusses Bond experiences and the people and brands that help to create those experiences...
The mantra of living like Bond, one moment at a time emanates from a concept of experiencing the joy of collecting small moments in life that add up to amazing journeys and stories....whether it's through style, locations, literature, fitness, and the movies themselves the world of Bond is explored through its people and their stories.
Ultimately though, The Bond Experience channel is a celebration of the James Bond franchise and the many people that form a true community. Our core mission is to create a strong connection in the Bond community amongst all the fans, regardless of interest or demographic.

Not only 260,000 words, but he seems also to have all of the facts, figures and names in his head of that which he wrote. Very impressive chap and interview. And a superb book as well.

I recently bought and read this book. Truly magnificent. We are so blessed to have the Lycett and Shakespeare biographies. Showing us, yet again, what an amazing person Fleming was. Thank you so much for this.

Reminds me of a visiting professor back during my Uni days, talking about his involvement in Bletchley Park, I have never seen the main hall of some 300 students totally silent as he told his story (probably because we were Computer Science students, it's what we were into), when his hour was up and one of the organisers interrupted him mid sentence, the whole hall demanded he finish, the lecturer backed off with a red face, to a monumental applause. He went on for another half an hour, including people like Turing, Churchill and Fleming. Great talkers like this are becoming quit rare.

I didn't want this interview to end! Way too short. Halfway through I ordered the book so I'm looking forward to it very much.

Just ordered the book, this interview sold me on it. I liked Fleming's lifestyle and want to know more, so had to get this one. Thanks for the interesting interview, David.

Brilliant interview! Nicholas Shakespeare is an amazing speaker and I’ve learned so much just from this talk. Most interesting part was how Fleming had a conversation with Albert Camus. I can see how his acceptance of the absurdity of life and his indulgence in its pleasures makes Bond very much an existentialist character. Both Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre Would probably recognize James Bond as such.

Can't wait to read this. If the book is half as interesting as Shakespeare's synopsis, it will be worth it

British author Ian Fleming (1908-1964), who served as an officer in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, certainly loved the Royal Navy for its discipline, courage, history and camaraderie, which was reflected in the fact that he enjoyed being called "Commander" by his friends and Goldeneye staff. Moreover, this was reflected in Goldeneye's decoration with a navy blue floor and push-out shutters all in view of the Caribbean sea where Columbus sailed by in1494 and his naval hero Horatio Nelson was stationed between 1777 and 1783.
Interestingly, 2024 will be the 60th anniversary of Fleming's passing, as in February we already celebrated the fact that American ornothologist James Bond, author of "Birds of the West Indies", visited Ian Fleming at "Goldeneye" Oracabessa Jamaica.
Interesting video about another great book on Ian Fleming and Nicholas Shakespeare shows he's a real raconteur, story teller and biographer on the amazing life of our beloved British author of exciting spy novels, which passed the test of time !

All joking aside, this video blew my mind. I'll never forget some of this stuff, and it really made me want to check out the book. It would not surprise me if the Bond organisation were waiting for the book to be released, in order to make a series about Fleming. I think you asked him 3 questions in the whole interview. A mine of information.

Wow, Nicholas was so interesting and animated. This was a very entertaining discussion, and I may have to watch again. I did like his discoveries of Fleming during his research and went from not liking him to coming to the conclusion that he is the "complete man".

I loved this book. Although Shakespeare wisely avoids the Bondian for a good half of the text, all the clues toward the series' genesis are there for the reader to draw their own conclusions. Definitely recommended!

Hi David….. I have the book….. I’ve read the book….. and your video was most informative!!!!
I was totally surprised that the Kennedys were so infatuated with 007!!!
If the Americans had a James Bond…. Castro would not have survived and the Cold War would have ended before it started!!!
It’s an excellent book The Complete Man!!!!!
The only disappointment is that it doesn’t cover the Fleming legacy!!!
    The films 25!!!!
The other authors that took up the mantle!!!!
It’s would have been brill if Nicholas had done an extra section to the book of what became of Fleming after he died!!!!
    The Legacy!!!!
    Kind regards Ian 👨‍🎤🇳🇿👍😎🍸🍸
