    Well Bob, what can I say except that was a brilliant video, very well presented. I suppose the great thing about the buffing system is it's a great deal easier to polish from different directions. Once again Bob, a brilliant video. Thank you

    I have the same acrylic buffing system from PSI. Thanks for the tip of keeping the blanks on the mandrel while buffing. I've had a few blanks get taken out of my fingers and fly around the shop. Some suffered damage. This will save that and make it easier. Thanks!

    I also have a small lathe with a tail stock "wiggle". I bought it from Rockler wood turning and am fortunate enough to have them nearby about 15 minutes away. I was surprised (and a bit disappointed) that the Harbor Freight lathe and the lathe I bought at Rockler are identical. I thought I would be buying a better lathe if I spent the extra money at Rockler. I did however get a 2 foot bed extension free, which expands my turning options. I also have this buffing system and all of my pens come out like glass. Absolutely worth the investment!

    The buffing of the wheels is something that Beal system suggests.

  • @michaeldemars2319
    @michaeldemars2319 3 роки тому +1

    BLACK = Emery Compound, a course abrasive material for removal of scratches, pits, paint, rust etc.
    BROWN = Tripoli compound used for general purpose cut and color on most soft metals.
    WHITE = Blizzard compound, used for color and final finish of harder metals, has a cutting action.
    RED = Jeweler's Rouge, designed to polish without any cutting action. Safe on thin plates. Use on its own wheel.
    BLUE = A dryer, almost greaseless wheel - designed to polish without any cutting action. Safe on thin plates. Use on its own wheel.
    GREEN = Used exclusively for Stainless Steel.

    Cost $49.00. It does run at 3650 rpm. It is a Central Machinery 6" Buffer.

    Bob,
    I'm thinking that the mandrel may be the "B" mandrel which is available from a few suppliers. It's a heavier mandrel, designed to reduce the risk of bowing the mandrel during use. nice vid.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому

      +John Sanford I know it's stiffer than the standard pen mandrel. It makes sense for a buffing system. Thank you for the info.

    Bob, I missed most of the live video last night but I'm reviewing it today. I have the same Milescraft pen assembly press as you and for a tip from me to you, the thing works much better if you mount it to your bench. I'm right handed and use mine in the opposite direction from you and keep the flip over stops toward me with the press mounted to my assembly table. It looks like you struggle with it because it isn't mounted.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому

      +Danny Moore Yeah, mounting would make a huge difference. I've been rethinking my set up. I don't want to mount it to the counter. Another issue is reaching around the tri-pod, that makes it tougher to use too.

      Bob

    When I was in Basic Training we had to wax the barracks floor and it had to look like a mirror or we had to do it all over again. Can't tell you the name of the wax we used but after it was down we placed a piece of Army (wool) blanket between the buffer and floor. If you ever wore real wool next to your skin you will know wool is slightly abrasive. Not sure how you could attach wool to your buffing system but it might be something to consider.

    Oh darn i just missed this video live broadcasting with about 4 years.Very interesting video and i learned a lot here. I also just ordered the Buffing System from my local pusher of Woodturner equipment.
    Difficult to know what wax that is the best, reconmandation for me ?
    My local dealer has a lot of Chestnut products.
    Learned how to use the Ca glue here and has to try that later today on some Olive Wood i bought last week, i think CA glue as finishing coat on bird's eye birch will be nice.

    I have the buffing system as well. I paid considerably more than $50 being in Australia. I came to the same conclusion as you that there is so little difference between that buffing system and using polish. In fact I find it quicker using a plastic automotive polish and then a kanuba wax over the top. I just don't feel the buffering system is any better or quicker.

      I have one more question for now.
      You talked about custom pens and a person new knew printed labels or pictures and glued them to the brass tubes.
      What kinda labels or materials are required for this other then the blanks.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  2 роки тому

      @@quaker19691 I think you will like that method much better.
      I stand the blanks on end, after painting, so excess paint will run out. Drill a hole in a scrap of wood larger than the tube diameter and stand the blank over it.
      Use a Q-Tip to apply the paint.
      Epoxy takes longer to dry but will not react with the paint. Also, C/A will eventually lose bond on acrylic blanks, epoxy will not.

    The Blue Rouge is a general purpose Jewelers Rouge. See the link for a chart that shows the different rouges and what they are used for. Not really accurate to compare sandpaper grits to rouges. Hope this helps! www.pjtool.com/jewelers-rouge-chart

    Thanks! I'd love to do CA finish. I have heard that CA finish can crack over time and get an alligator effect, like some paints do. Is that true?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 років тому +1

      +Gary Lundgren Crafts I have only had that happen if I use Activator. It can also crack if dropped on a hard surface.

      Bob

      Thanks for your channel. I learn much from you. Can I ask . . . while I'd like to use CA glue for a finish, it takes a lot of time when batching up a lot of pens for a crafts show. I've been using this Aussie Oil, which I believe came thru Barry Gross. That seems to give a good hard finish. I'll do about 5 or 6 coats. Any thoughts on that? That works great on small projects like pens, but hard to cover larger things like bottle stoppers before it starts to cure too much.Thanks!

      +Gary Lundgren Crafts I've heard good things about the Aussie Oil but I haven't tried it. I believe it's similar to O.B. Shine juice. It should give a long lasting finish from what I've read.
      Regards,
      Bob

      I have had it happen when I applied too many coats (thick finish build) and yes with the activator. CA IS very brittle!

    Your pen press is that brand available in stores or do you have to get it from a distributor of that brand. I am just starting to turn and right now I am using quick clap to press my pens together and i would like to get a pen press.

    Do you use water or Denature alcohol with the micro after your last coat of CA

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  6 років тому

      Hello Paul,
      I use Denatured alcohol to wipe a blank down before applying a finish.
      I use water for sanding with the Micro Mesh pads.
