Key word: "Incrementalism". I only allow for HUGE increments. Humanity is steeped in little increments, often hypocritically so. Abolition is an increment too. There is more to do, more HUGE increments to aspire to, even after abolition. "We" can't afford small incrementalism anymore, re. animal welfare, climate change, peace v war, etc. "We", and our victims, need many paradigm shifts, concurrently. Time is of the essence...
I find myself saying the nonsense term "OMG" often. - Shelter workers serving meat. - Switching from big "red" meat animals, to smaller (and many more!) chickens, to smaller (and many more) fish (not to mention the "bycatch"). We seem to regard smaller sentients as more ok to abuse - think lab mice, rabbits, etc. But I loved Jamie's well reasoned responses. (I would not have the patience.) 😁 And yes, morality stands alone and is not dependent on- , nor originating from- , religion. Religion co-opts morality (to some degree), just as it co-opts authority, war-like behavior (to some degree), and other human behaviors (anthropocentrism). It co-opts aspects of human psychology to form a power structure, which some people feel a need for, or feel comfortable in.
