@@gman20031 Check no fuses have been blown. If not do a parasitic draw to find which circuit is affected. Then obtain the wiring diagram for that circuit and then isolate the problem area by voltage drop testing. Dim lights means that there is resistance on that circuit which is taking voltage away from the lights. If the fuse for the lights that don't work is blown and you replace the fuse with the correct rated fuse and it blows again then you have a short circuit on that components electrical circuit. You will need to do a voltage drop test as well using a wiring. diagram
You can also do the same thing by using a small 12v bulb with leads and alligator clips attached in place of the meter connected between the battery minus post and the ground terminal wire you have first removed. It will light when there is even a tiny parasitic current flowing. The brighter the light then the more the current draw. If you want to try it out then hookup the light as described and open the glove box or a door. The light will get very bright. I learned this from an old mechanic. Be careful out there.

With the key out the amp should power down and kill power to the sub as the mosfets shut off. The fuses actually do NOT protect the components, their functions are to protect the installation and avoid electrical fires. (1.13) 1 - If a component draws too much current it already is bad and the only thing left to protect is the wiring... 2 - If there's a short to ground causing higher current flow than a component can stand, this short will take place before the component and the high current doesn't even flow through it. Think about it😏
max webster If the short takes place after the component current flow will be limited by the component itself to the amount the circuit was designed for.
Great video, it was very descriptive. I had a small question, I have a fuse that keeps blowing (its the tail fuse, controls the tail lights, parking lights, and the license plate lights). I found the problem to be the parking lights, since the fuses stopped blowing when they were disconnected. What's the next step?
the only reason why a fuse would blow is flowing too much current through the fuse. Either someone installed brighter light bulbs that require more current than regular light bulbs or splicing the tail light wires to draw power from it to power up something else like extra brake lights or reverse lights. Assuming it's not the case in your car or you don't have a faulty body control module, i highly recommend to check the wiring harness for any shorts. Looks like You have a short to ground. possibly anywhere between the fuse and the tail lights on the live wire that goes to the tail lights has a damaged insulation, that rubs against the chassis.
I did install aftermarket headlights that have CCFL halos, but on all the reviews on Amazon, they said that they work fine and don't require additional power. How would one go about checking the wire harnesses? I have access to a wiring diagram, and I located the grounds for the tail lights, parking lights, and the license plate lights.
you said you have found the problem to be parking lights. there're 4 parking lights. 2 in the front, 2 in the rear. Narrow it down to to see which one of them causes the fuse to blow. Rather than blowing a bunch of fuses as you test, you can buy a re settable fuse circuit breaker that goes in to where the normal fuse would go in. so you can manually reset the fuse every time it blows out. Once you narrow it down to the defective parking light. Then start checking the live wire that comes to that light. check the parking light switch too. Sometimes they short out inside.
Junky DIY guy thanks. Actually, a set of 25 fuses only cost me $5 so it's really not worth it. Also, I found out that the problem is the passenger side parking light. If I unplug that, the fuse doesn't blow. Should the next step be to try to trace the wire from the lights to the fuse, if that's even possible?
Maybe I missed something, but how would shorted subwoofer speaker wires cause a battery drain? Or any speaker wires for that matter? I don't think they can, they're post-amp that's switched off when the vehicle's off.
Some German cars require reprogramming the ECU if you disconnect the battery. So sometimes this is the only way you can find a short unless you wanna spend big$$$ reprogramming the ecu.
For prolong storage of vehicle ( no driving), it is useful to do one or both of this, 1) a manual 'disconnect switch' to positive battery terminal 2) have a solar panel ( getting Sun) that trickle charges the battery while in storage / parked. But also check for weak battery draining ( not holding charge while disconnected).
Disconnecting the negative battery on some newer cars such as VWs and Jaguars could cause a loss of throttle settings and a dealer scan tool is the only way to get the car started.
This is not true one does not need to re-align or do basic settings in a new Audi or VW when the battery is disconnected. The ECU automatically does this all you need to do is leave the ignition turned on for a few seconds after the battery is Re-connected..
No, a short is an unintended path to earth. If this happens it will create an over current situation and blow the fuse. The fault with the sub wires in the video would not cause this fault with these symptoms. It would put an amplifier into protect mode, not drain the battery.
Plus speaker wire coming from an aftermarket amp shorting would out the amp in to protect mode, not drain a battery. The melting of the plastic is caused by a bad connection.
Whew, glad I found your video again. Just look at some of the others and , well, I'm sure you already know. Thanks! I put (not physically) a thumbs up on the good comments here. Why is the title of this video how to find a short? You're not finding a short, you're finding a parasitic draw
Do shorts cause parasitic draw?
No, a short is an unintended path to earth. If this happens it will create an over current situation and blow the fuse. The fault with the sub wires in the video would not cause this fault with these symptoms. It would put an amplifier into protect mode, not drain the battery.
Shorts to ground blow fuses a light thats on in a closed glove box as an example or a parasitic draw (module not going to sleep) drains the battery
Plus speaker wire coming from an aftermarket amp shorting would out the amp in to protect mode, not drain a battery. The melting of the plastic is caused by a bad connection.
Speaker cable had nothing to do with the voltage drainage period
Yeah, probably blew a transistor in the RADIO because of shorted output
Typically a larger wire is required to drive your subs. I would replace the wires with larger. Thanks for the video.. well done
This is a great video, I've gotta come back to it every couple years to refresh my memory :)
Fantastic thanks
You're a smart man . Best problem solving video I've seen . Thank you :)
7:41 Sweet dolly zoom lol
That remote just realized that the radio is planning on assassinating the president.
Whew, glad I found your video again. Just look at some of the others and , well, I'm sure you already know. Thanks!
I put (not physically) a thumbs up on the good comments here.
I'm going to say this and I say it humorously and with love
In 1983, MTV music video shorts hit television. It was a rockin' and rollin' good time! There were videos that were interesting, one curious one was call Fish Heads (eat them up, hum). It was a riot.
But there's one, also, had the band members moving real fast and wore gloves similar as you wear here. That song was a riot and a barn burner, as well. Your gloves and the fast forward remind me of that video. Love it! You're an icon. Keep rockin' those excellent, clearly and simply explained videos. (Too many adjectives?)
That works on old cars new cars have body control module this not going to work home boy
OkY so How about you explain why it won't work or a how to on vehicle's with bcm?
Lmao wtf is a home boy, G?
One of the best videos productions I've seen, keep up the good work. I really like the digital diagrams. Good on ya!
Dude! I never even thought about doing that. Thank you so much.🙏🏾
Good tutorial covers the logic, and describes basics. Thanks
Well done. Concise and clear. I had no idea you can check blade fuses that way.
Thank you !!!!! I followed your approach and located the source of my problem. As luck would have it, it was the absolute LAST of 27 fuses that I pulled!!!

lucky you!!
Often it works out like this. ...hardly ever the first one😒
Man u definitely has some outstanding teaching skills
Easy to understand and clear illustrations.
Very good presentation and techniques used. From a very appreciative DIY guy.
This was very well put together. Very nice instructions!!! Thank you
Thank you very much. Now I have a better understanding of 12 volt systems.
Very clear and simple narration. TNXS
Great video!! I have a 1980 Dodge St.Regis that has a short somewhere. I drove it a long distance home after buying it and it kept draining the battery. It has been driving me crazy.
