  • I have been getting questions about how to reuse / reformat storage array disks from 520 Sector back to 512 sector FAT for use with Windows/MS Servers, Linux and NAS solution that are white box based. So here is a short 1,2,3 that you can follow to do this right and save a ton on money for these drives are cheap. Know the Pre-Middle-Post steps. I also recommend that you buy some extra drives for most of the storage array hard drive are used to some level. Remember also that these disk drive are very high ended so it is a good pick plus is still a great saving to re propose these disk drives.

What is the advantage of reformatting a disk from 520 to 512 sectors?

Depends on your system but if takes a few hours. That is why I posted how to do many at once in my video...

I just bought this populated disk shelf for another purpose. At first I thought it would allow me to plug in my netapp drives and format them but I don't think it's compatible. Is it compatible? If so how do I do it? Will my raid card see the netapp drives? EMC VNX SAE 25x 600GB 10K Array w/ 2x 6GB SAS LCC Controllers 303-104-000E

SAS is just that, SAS. If you dumb down the serial ports it should work. You just don't have the EMC based feature. It will run as a simple SAS array. The only real thing that could require a cable change is if you have a Mini-SAS controller connecting to a SAS array. (Like with HP controllers) They have cables that will hook this config up... You should be good but I would like to see how it goes when you start working with it.

@@leadiususa7394 Yeah because these 20 netapp drives that come with 30 days doa warranty by ebay come with no warranty when I format them to 512 bytes. So it may be a 250$ fiasco. Also, Is it ok just to plug these netapp drives into my server bays and if the server doesn't give me an error readout on the panel then they are good? I bought a server specific hard drive that turned out doa. I plugged in 4 of the netapp drives and the panel didn't give me any errors. But the system was blind to them

I have a hp p812 that I am trying to get to recognize the drives within an emc array. Any ideas on why I am not able to get the raid card to see the arrays even though I have the a channel and the b channel plugged into the raid card? and I am using the primary ports.

That is a 24 channel SAS raid controller I believe, what class of EMC SAS disk shelf array do you have if I may ask? Also are the disks reformatted back to 512 sector? I do hope it is not a FC disk array. That is Fiber Channel and not SAS, it will not work... Let me know...

@@zacharymontenieri2877 Yes, this is a dual fail over disk SAS array. Keep it simple by connecting Raid controller cables to a single path for now. (Make sure the SAS cables lock in place on both ends, if they pull back out easy then your cabling may not be right.) next see if you can see the disks at all and so you can format them as stand alone or try to raid 0 one of the disks. set each one up as raid 0 for now, you will not be able to use them yet but can you see the drive devices first. If so you are 50% there next follow my link for my Sector 520 to 512 link by doing the Linux reformatting using a USB boot memory stick. Let me know how it goes. Here to help... /:>

@@zacharymontenieri2877 if your drives in 520 sector size you need hba like hp h220 (not raid controller p812) to passthrough drives to the OS like CentOS or Ubuntu and then install app sg3-utils (for ubuntu: sudo apt install sg3-utils for CentOS: sudo yum install sg3-utils) and then format using command: sg_format --format --size=512 /dev/sg*

Hey. I bought a Dell Precision T7610 it has native sas capability. I bought some 3.5" sas drives on ebay 2 months ago already formatted to 512 bytes. The t7610 sees the drives and I can configure raid 1 in the raid firmware. I loaded windows 10 on usb and it sees the drives but I can't do anything with them. I suspect I need to set a drive as the boot drive. Maybe even format them. Do you think this is correct?
