I read somewhere once that a volcano eruption caused a few years of cold wet summers followed by a few years of famine which in turn caused the French revolution. There's nothing quite like a combination of cold wet and hunger to make families mourn the birth of another hungry mouth to feed. That might help explain the cavalier attitude to death, and the progression of smuggling into wrecking. Transportation to Australia was commonplace as well for stealing sheep, the source of warmth and food 😕
Very true my friend…. Will try and integrate move controversy into my live shows www.karljameslangfordproductions.studio
Oooarrrr, love how all this ties in with the French and American revolutions time period. Tobacco from the former colonies in smoke filled coffee houses. Devon, Cornwall and South Wales; the river Severn strikes again 😉
Dodgy dealers on the coast. Poor farmers in land
@@karljlangford not much changes eh?
@@JP-bh8ue no change
There was so much in this episode, too much to take in in one viewing. Another quick thought, ciggies keep your appetite down which is one of the reasons we put on weight when we stop smoking. Maybe a reason tobacco was so fought over between the tax man and the public, even today. Spirits warm your belly and help you sleep, also highly taxed. How desperate might you be in a cold hungry period. Wreckers were awful, but were they greedy or desperate or both?
And they were profiting. Spirits have more benefits, useful for lambing to warm up a lamb, and anticeptic also
Really? Do you rub the alcohol into the lamb's skin? How interesting, every day really is a school day; but in a good way as an adult 😆
@@JP-bh8ue no they drink it to get their body temperature up
And yes, they were profiting but as today, would they rather send money to the king to fund foreign wars or keep the money local? There's no easy answers but as we get colder and wetter I guess we'll find out 🫣
@@karljlangfordyou're so funny I don't know if you're joking or not 🤣
