This bloke Stefan has a genius for explanation, no hesitation and he doesn't assume a level of knowledge which most of us don't have. Enjoying all your videos especially the Kimberley which I am fairly familiar with. Your commentary is very clear and unpretentious in all your videos too. Keep it up Gavin.
Peter Bruce cheers mate, its appreciated. Stephan is a legend, how he could work and answer all my questions at the same time blew me away. Thanks for watching, I'm stoked you're enjoying the shows.
Hi, Stefan did my lock up kit 3 years ago and the figures he has quoted are spot on. I do about 70k per year and it has saved me a fortune in fuel and has changed my vehicle. I didn't know he has a new kit available. Ill be in there ASAP to up grade/ modify mine. My ECU upgrade was done by Brett West at A.P.E. and love it.Great product, great service and highly recommended.
Ricky Esser Cheers mate. Yep Stefan and the whole Richards family are bloody legends. Their kit has made a huge diffrence to my world. 70k a year, thats some serious k's is it for business or pleasure?
An informative video for those considering a torque converter lock up kit and ECU reflash. I've had the Stockwell Stocklock fitted for 9 months now and like you with the Richards kit am very happy with the way the vehicle has been transformed. I'm looking at the ECU reflash as my next modification.
I have these mods to my 200 (Lockup kit and the two re-maps plus a Manta exhaust), and 'the beast' is superb. In the right conditions, I can get 12.6L/100 towing a Camprite Camper Trailer with the wife and kids on board. Its the way Toyota should have made 200's from the factory!
Tucking some control modules behind a kick plate, I think I would utilize those mounting tabs, and put a screw through them, or at a minimum double side tape them to something if not they are going to just shift around as you go down the road.
Great informative video. Would you know if these guys have a tune for the new Ford 2Lt, 10 speed engine? Love watching your vids, always very well put together. Your Videos are the benchmark quality I hope to achieve in the future, for now, just a good excuse to go bush!! cheers mate.
Thanks. Good to know all these. I was pretty curious about fuel economy, but 3l/100km saving doesn't give any insight. If it was 20lt/100km before tuning I would be expecting to bring it down more. Where if it was 15lt/100km 3lt saving is a lot.
Yep, still works as intended it just tells the computer not to hedge either way and that when you select a gear you really do want that gear .. not 70% of the gear and the rest diverted incase you want another gear lol
Hi there, I have my 2020 LC200 diesel in Europe. Would it be possible to send ECU and trans remap online or do I have to send the unit to you guys? How much would it be? Can you do the ECU remap without the vehicle to be there? How much would be sending the torque lockup converter as well? THX
Eric and his mighty 200 LC he told me its possible. He checked in with me to make sure I was all good a short time after the install. No problems so far after 7 months of use. No codes at all
I have a 2020 and the gearbox tuning is terrible. It wants to rev the engine as if it’s a 4 cylinder petrol. It’s not just the torque converter, it’s every gear and torque converter. It seems to want the engine to be revving at 2500rpm plus if you want any acceleration at all. It totally wastes the low down torque of the engine. My old Prado 3l d4d with the 5 speed auto worked so much better despite the much worse torque. So much for progress.
Am considering fitting a Beaudesert exhaust .. do Richards recommend fitting the exhaust system BEFORE or AFTER installing the TCL and doing the 'Flash ..?
Hi I'm very impressed so I got a question I got a land cruiser Sahara 2003 petrol v8 any gas is possible done son modifications please let me know thanks
Richard Cortez Gday mate, yep both Diesels and Petrols will benefit from these types of modifications. Especially the torque converter. Give Richards Auto Electrical a call. They can help you with more technical information and can direct you to your closest dealer
Hahah yep still have the stupid grin. My fuel consumption is a little higher now with the new tent and awning being both larger and heavier but nothing major :D
G'day Gav, just found your channel and am loving it. Will travel the CSR one day with my family. what was it like on your own? as it is recommended to travel in groups. just in regards to modifications like in this video......does that void warranty of a new car? i'd imagine it would? your thoughts? cheers Steve
G'day Stephen, I love travelling on my own, I do it all the time in some of the most remote regions of Australia but with that being said I have a lot of experience doing such things and it's not for everyone. As for the modification it absolutely voids the warranty on the vehicle. Such is the confidence I have in the build quality of Toyota' s I did it anyway :D Look me up when you are ready to do the CSR, I'm starting tag along tours on the CSR from 2019 on wards. Cheers Gav
HI Gavin, Those figures don't add up...I am think he is getting his performances specs wrong as our 2019 twin turbo L/Cruiser Diesel engine produces 210kw (286 hp) 650 N/M standard. i know this video is 4 years ago...however, I'm confused about what was said at the 10minute 40 second mark in the video... increasing the turbo boost and various other mods bumps up performance to 240 horsepower and the torque from 650 to 800 N/M torque. Seems to me that he has confused the base factory specs of the single turbo (151kw, 202hp, 430N/M) with twin turbo (210kw, 286hp, 650N/M)? So what would the performance increase be for the twin turbo model? Would it be 360hp? Also, I am not convinced the torque improvement on the twin turbo would be only 800N/M if increasing turbo boost of the single turbo model by 4 psi is going to increase the N/M torque to over 800N/M? Makes me wonder whether or not the remapping is worthwhile? Torque convertor lockup definitely seems a good idea for fuel economy...i think that may be a good option.
Dale Cameron Hi there, sorry its taken me a while to get back to you. I run the Manta Performance exhaust. There is a full list of mods on my website www.summitx.net and I did a Manta factory tour video last week. Thanks for watching
Hmmm I’m a little confused. I also have an LC-200 (2012) and with 3” Manta Exhaust and the oversized Safari Snorkel we are averaging 7.48km’s per litre or 13.37Lt’s per 100km’s. I have not had any remapping / mods done. I have the same bull bar as you, roof rack, two awnings and shovel permanently mounted. I am a little at odds as to your fuel consumption especially your 17’ish litres per 100kms which is the economy I got on my 80 series petrol cruiser. At this point in time I’m not convinced that the torque converter lockup kit is totally justified. Yes I do have the problem of the gear box ‘hunting’ but a quick spurt and then easing back seems to allow the gearbox to find 6th and then that gear holds until I drop to around 95km’s. I noted you were sitting at 1600’ish RPM’s at 110kms and that is what we get without any lockup or mod to the engine. I am enjoying your channel Gavin so hope I don’t disappoint with this alternative view and with my results. Perhaps there is another reason why I’m getting what I am versus what you used to get ie compared to your other km’s so happy to compare further. Just thought I’d throw this in for discussion. Cheers mate. Paul 😎
G'day Paul, not sure mate its hard to tell sometimes. Between variance in Toyota's manufacturing process weight and tyres could also play a factor, MT's vs AT's for instance and 33" vs 32" STD. Fully loaded i'm just under 3.8ton. I have 33" mud terrains which effect fuel consumption a fair bit and the RTT while slightly aero dynamic does have me driving a brink when it comes to wind. The under body components play a part as well. My long range fuel tank sits a little lower and more square than the spare tyre that was in its place. The last thing I can think of is driving style, I consider myself conservative on the loud pedal but i'm sure there are plenty of people even lighter on the loud pedal than myself. A lot of factors come into play and sometimes it can be hard to pin down the cause. Vic Widman and I have had similar chats. His 200 series uses more fuel than mine after having similar mods done. In many ways our cars are comparable but he gets higher fuel figures. One of lifes mysteries :D
You've actually gotten quite a few more bits on yours there that do make sense as to your higher fuel numbers. 3.8T is way more than where I'd be sitting at the moment and with all the extra's you've mentioned and the roof top tent plus the extra drag from the long range tank it makes it easier to see why your consumption could blow my figures way out. And yes I concede your tyres would definitely make a huge difference as well. Heavier rotational force = more energy required to turn = more fuel. After convincing me mate, you're scaring me out of doing too many more mods LOL. Was looking next to doing a 2" lift and throwing in 33" MT's. Buggar it, I'll just accept I'll get bogged everywhere, go less places than you, sleep under the car with the wife not over it and not eat for a week. At least I'll keep to my 1,000kms per 138 litres hahaha. Was trying to find your reply about the 4WD show here in Perth. We will be going too Gav but most likely on the Friday as the crowds roll in on Saturday and Sunday and that's just way too busy for my bush loving bum to contend with. I noted you posted your email address in another reply on here so will shoot you an email with my contact number on it. Then would be nice to meet up mate and if your wife / family are with you even better. My wife will be with me so all good. I'll be in touch mate. Paul
PaulnSans hmmm... I have the older 08 200 with about the same mods as Gavin and live in Ktown myself and i honestly get quite simular fuel usage as the he does the twin turbo v8s chew the fuel. I have trouble believing the people say they get under 12s. If you do a bit of research...no.. a simple google search will tell you on the highway with some 4x4 mods ur ganna use around 15-18L.
Hi Just to throw in another variable. Fuel is very variable. I noticed with my 100 series that my fuel consumption had increased about six months ago. It had jumped up by around 2 litres per hundred klm from 11.5 to 13.4. I have owned it for many years and while I don’t check it every fill, I do check it fairly regularly. I spoke about this to a few of my customers who own transport companies and they asked what brand of fuel I was using. It then became obvious that the increase was around the same time as I’d started buying cheaper (no name) fuel. One customer in particular told me that when he uses Caltex premium diesel he gets about 200 klm more out of a 200 litre tank than if he uses a cheap independent brand fuel. I switched to Caltex premium diesel to see the outcome and now get between 10.5 and 11.5 litres per 100 klm. It’s the only thing I have changed.

Couple of things: If you want wires to break solder them. If you want your wiring to last crimp them. Crimps also allow proper insulation to be used and not PVC tape. ESD protection - crazy not to take basic precautions.
Matt Harrison Gday Matt, the tape was only temporary, heatshrink was applied to all joins but for the purpose of editing that stage wasn't added because of length and there was no dialogue at that stage so it ended up on the cutting room floor :)
SummitX.net Gday! Good to know about the heat shrink - really important to do that properly. Particularly if you really depend upon reliability and safety. Just to let you know - the huge rail accident in the UK was caused exactly by PVC tape being used to insulate an unused wire in a signalling cabinet - dozens of lives lost due to it. Hate to think how many vehicle fires have been caused by it too. You will not find soldered connections on any rail vehicle (38 years in that industry) or aircraft on wires that are subjected to movement/vibrations as we always see the wire fracture at the end of the soldered portion (due to quite complicated metallurgical reasons). Absolute no-no. Loving your videos on the CSR by the way :)
G'day mate, that will depend a lot on where you get it installed. Give them a call on this number below or drop in to finding out where your local installer is and while your chatting with them ask how much you should expect to pay roughly. Address: 113 Maurice Rd, Murray Bridge SA 5253 Phone: (08) 8532 1411
slowboat the main reason is because they build to a global average with a large percentage of safety factor. All we do is narrow that down to be specifically tuned for Aussie conditions
Not as far as i'm aware. I believe they are made in house at Richards Auto Electrical and the ECU remap is provided by an Aussie engineer. However I could have my wires crossed.
G'day mate, you would need to ask your local dealer. There is a fair chunk of extra money I spend on all my gear because i'm 1700kms from the nearest capital city.
Thanks mate, I'm still doing many trips but not allowed to film these ones. Cant wait to tell you what I've been up to the last 7 months. 3 months to go and I can share what I've been doing and where I've been going.
Any water crossing is a cold water crossing if the car has been driving as it all gets hot so am not sure how you get that there is not many cold water crossings up there gavin
Haha I probably should have added some context about that. This video was filmed in a farmers back paddock shed after a 4 week long, 10,000km 4wd trip through some of the most remote deserts in Australia. Shortly after this we went to the farmers homestead and cleaned her :)

Yeah, I was amazed by his multi tasking too.
This dude knows his stuff and is great at conveying the knowledge to folks like me who know nothing!

Here is a man who knows his stuff .well done Stefan .. articulated to the T.. 👌
I am very impressed by Stefan. He has great knowledge and communicates very richly.
I love the engineering minds of Aussies.. Great video, and love your Land Cruiser...
Steven Dhanjal cheers mate I'm glad your enjoying my videos
Steven Dhanjal i
I am grateful that I watched this video. Thank you so much for presenting it.

I'm sorry I dont know if they do the Ford2LT but give them a call and they can help. P.S. sorry for the slow reply. No idea how i missed this message
When ya mechanic smiles and says ‘listen to that’ you’ve found the right fella😂👌
Great informative video, I have a question, I have a manual lockup kit, is it possible to add the auto function to it. cheers
I'm not sure, sorry I cant help much with that question
Thanks. Good to know all these. I was pretty curious about fuel economy, but 3l/100km saving doesn't give any insight. If it was 20lt/100km before tuning I would be expecting to bring it down more. Where if it was 15lt/100km 3lt saving is a lot.

Awesome video... Want mine done now.
Hi Great Video Thankyou. Did Stefan mention anything about it throwing error codes.
Eric and his mighty 200 LC he told me its possible. He checked in with me to make sure I was all good a short time after the install. No problems so far after 7 months of use. No codes at all
I thought I'd read the torque converter lockup was only an issue on the 2008 - 2012 models?
Stephen Lloyd 2016 200 series and up has the sport shift. Can hold 6 gears longer.
I have a 2020 and the gearbox tuning is terrible. It wants to rev the engine as if it’s a 4 cylinder petrol. It’s not just the torque converter, it’s every gear and torque converter. Shawn Taylor you're welcome:)
Am looking at fitting the Richards lock up kit and remap on my MY13 200series, any thoughts on the merit / need for a valve body upgrade also?
G'day Mike, I dont know anything about valve body upgrades. But if I wanted to find out I would call Alan from Toyotune.
Hey Gavin, enjoyed the video, just wondering if things are still good and if the fuel usage has changed at all. Still got the stupid grin?
Hahah yep still have the stupid grin. My fuel consumption is a little higher now with the new tent and awning being both larger and heavier but nothing major :D
How many km’s do you get from a full tank(size?) around town and on trips?
Between 1200km and 1400km at highways speeds. As much as 1600km in easy offroad track conditions. (265L)
G'day Gav, just found your channel and am loving it.
Will travel the CSR one day with my family.
what was it like on your own? as it is recommended to travel in groups.
just in regards to modifications like in this video......does that void warranty of a new car?
i'd imagine it would?
your thoughts?
cheers

Aussies you need to come to UAE we got hell lots of lc200 & y61
If i'm lucky I will be there next year :D Just looking for sponsors to help make the trip happen :D
hey mate put some pickup for us would love to see some
HI Gavin, Those figures don't add up...I am think he is getting his performances specs wrong as our 2019 twin turbo L/Cruiser Diesel engine produces 210kw (286 hp) 650 N/M standard.
i know this video is 4 years ago...however, I'm confused about what was said at the 10minute 40 second mark in the video... increasing the turbo boost and various other mods bumps up performance to 240 horsepower and the torque from 650 to 800 N/M torque.
Seems to me that he has confused the base factory specs of the single turbo (151kw, 202hp, 430N/M) with twin turbo (210kw, 286hp, 650N/M)?

I want to know which states in Australia to make this beautiful modification I like that's what's there doing
South Australia, in a town called Murray Bridge.
Hi, What exhaust are you running on your rig? Nice note!
Dale Cameron Hi there, sorry its taken me a while to get back to you. I run the Manta Performance exhaust. There is a full list of mods on my website www.summitx.net and I did a Manta factory tour video last week. Thanks for watching
Anybody know of a similar option in the UK. Keen to see the same gains on long tours.
www.econ-lock.com/
LOL are your windows stuck down, you got more dust in there than on the Cape York road............Good video :)
Nkelly Last LOL no, this video was filmed after 3 weeks out bush :)
does this apply to the 5.7 litre petrol engine? most of the ones in my country are diesel
Ojo Aereo not sure, mine is diesel

Hi
Just to throw in another variable.
Fuel is very variable. I noticed with my 100 series that my fuel consumption had increased about six months ago. It had jumped up by around 2 litres per hundred klm from 11.5 to 13.4.
I have owned it for many years and while I don’t check it every fill, I do check it fairly regularly.

I switched to Caltex premium diesel to see the outcome and now get between 10.5 and 11.5 litres per 100 klm.
It’s the only thing I have changed.
Cutting wires, aftermarket relays added to my 200 series?
Soldering to the factory board?
Not on my cruiser.
Camping and Caravanning SEQ CACSEQ hahah advanced modifications aren't for everyone but if you do its important to get the right people doing the job. :)
You must be joking.
What is the model of that onboard computer?
Which onboard computer? I have several :D
Interesting Video Gavin, thanks for sharing, have never really considered Torque slip as a factor and I run a 9 speed, will be something to consider.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, torque slip in fluid couplings is a major source of energy waste. Solve that issue and everything else comes good :D
Couple of things:
If you want wires to break solder them. If you want your wiring to last crimp them. Crimps also allow proper insulation to be used and not PVC tape.

Dude, thats awesome to know, thank you so much for writing in. I think I'm going to double check some wiring around my car tomorrow
Ok what’s the damage $$$$$$ ?

that's a very impressive gain in economy. more power and better economy why doesn't Toyota do that? does it screw the pollution control?

Not as far as i'm aware. I believe they are made in house at Richards Auto Electrical and the ECU remap is provided by an Aussie engineer. However I could have my wires crossed.
Definitely *not* Econ lock
How much was this lock up kit and ecu tune?
G'day mate, you would need to ask your local dealer. There is a fair chunk of extra money I spend on all my gear because i'm 1700kms from the nearest capital city.
Could be the scotch talking but missing you on the trips man :)
Thanks mate, I'm still doing many trips but not allowed to film these ones. Cant wait to tell you what I've been up to the last 7 months. 3 months to go and I can share what I've been doing and where I've been going.
Just bang a bit of electrical tape on she’ll be right! Wow such a professional install 🤦🏻♂️
V10 Touareg, all standard; including sealed wheel bearings for cold water crossings.
Stuart Calvin ok :) not many cold water crossings up here in the North West
Any water crossing is a cold water crossing if the car has been driving as it all gets hot so am not sure how you get that there is not many cold water crossings up there gavin
Come for a swim, I will show you what 50c weather does to some of the water crossings up here :D
Ахуенноо
What a filthy vehicle.
Not just outside, but the inside is disgusting.
I can’t imagine taking my car in for someone to look at, in that state.
Haha I probably should have added some context about that. This video was filmed in a farmers back paddock shed after a 4 week long, 10,000km 4wd trip through some of the most remote deserts in Australia. Shortly after this we went to the farmers homestead and cleaned her :)
For real....that's what you get out of this video...his car is dirty.. FFS!
