When it comes to quality control, GSC / Max Factory noticeably prioritizes some Figma releases to the detriment of others. For Non-Japanese People: I don't know if you realize how important it is that they have women in management or visible on the workforce. It's very hard in Japan for women to exceed in positions of power in the workplace. There are often no women in any positions of power due to sexism and thinking "oh they will quit when they get married" even if this is not true. So even seeing one in a documentary is amazing. There are a lot of movements right now on the front of Japanese women's equality in the workplace. They call it "the bamboo ceiling" for a reason! So supporting companies that support women in the workplace such as Kyoani (which is mostly women), and Good Smile Company is very important for gender equality in Japan.

I see too many people comment being like "Well if its a good looking fake, I don't mind" when there is a reason why the price is high on figures. Quality and attention to detail. Yet at the same time people who are getting into the figure collecting hobby typically don't know where to buy and automatically go to ebay and amazon as the first thing.

But after handling and playing with them for a several time, it frustrates me more than it made me happy, so I try to buy the real one to compare and that was the moment of enlightenment for me. The real ones, eventhough it cost you a lot of money, will never betray your expectation. I have only four nendoroids, and the story behind them is kind of interesting.
About six or so years back, I purchased the Black Rock Shooter OVA from Amazon, and it came with two nendoroids, one of Black Rock Shooter, and one of Dead Master. Cut to about six months before today, and I was visiting my local comic book store, looking around, when I spotted something up on the highest shelf of the Used section, squished tightly between two larger boxes.
The box was turned on its side, but it had a single picture of a nendoroid of Mato, Black Rock Shooter's human form. It was only twenty dollars, so I asked the worker to get it down for me so that I could buy it, because I love the Black Rock Shooter series.
Imagine my surprise when it turned out that not only did the box contain two nendoroids, one for Mato and the one for Yomi, Dead Master's human form, but they were the designed the exact same way as the nendoroids I already owned, two sides of the same coin.
Needless to say, I was ecstatic. To think that I would come across the other half of my nendoroids, years later.
All four now sit proudly at the top of my bookshelf, Mato and Yomi taking up the center, with Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master beside them.

it's mostly a matter of perspective. In the states we're used to cheaply manufactured figurines that are almost entirely all "children's toys". Figures that aren't like that tend to be fully rendered and highly detailed statuettes. So when we see a chibi figure, we tend to unconsciously categorize it as a cheap child's toy. Obviously these are easily on par with full scale figures, but it's easy to not be aware of that if your experience is only with the extreme ends of the spectrum

    This was an awesome documentary!
As someone who has quite a few of these Nendoroids (and anime figures in general), it's great to see how much hard-work, dedication and passion goes into making them.
It was especially endearing to see how the people in the documentary feel about Nendoroids, where even the CEO is super geeky about them and even considers them comrades.
No wonder Good Smile Company is so succesful, when both the employees and CEO are passionate about their craft and treat it with respect.

As someone who doesn't really consume prepainted figures but opt to paint them myself, I can truly understand and highly appreciate all the hard work that the artist pour into each figure, I share in their feelings of having these little plastic figures being a part of themselves, my work in garage kits also defines many times who I am now, even though these figures end up being massed produced, the hands that made them (at least those that are made by hand still), have that human touch that brings art to life in a way. I understand that to be able to make a profit out of this industry, things have to be massed produced, I always though that the human heart would not be in those finished boxes ready to be shipped, but after seeing these sculptors and artist, I've changed my mind.
I only own 1 nendo, and even with it's imperfections from mass production, I can appreciate those behind the scenes that made them.

Ah! I watch your channel, so I was very surprised to see this comment. ☺️ It was a welcome surprise.
I think the work of mass production definitely leaves room for individual artists like yourself to take the work in a different direction and to set a different standard. For example, I can’t see a mass producer trying to figure out a feasible way to tape off individual rose petals to be painted against a white dress... they’d probably give up or change the design. Your specific set of resources (time being a large one) means you can invest more into the singular item.
And your works are absolutely OOAK, giving it its own value. While it’s certainly special, you would not even be physically capable of reproducing it on a large scale. That’s where companies like Good Smile come in.

@WeeItsNookies Most aren't quite $60 Usually 30-40 range if you know how to bargain shop (amiami is by far the cheapest website even after shipping in my 10 yrs collecting). Plus I don't know how many second hand deals I've gotten anywhere $15-25 per. But compared to a lot of other hobby things like say Funko Pops the quality is by far superior along with the paint jobs so I am willing to pay (figmas tho they have gotten crazy expensive over the years). Also if there is a defect in a new product good smile will replace the part for free! I've had them do that for both figmas and nendoroids in the past.

Knowing the process for any nendofan I think is important to understand things like price, demand- like just how much goes into all of this to justify price and time constraints. Even I had no idea just how hands-on GSC is which makes supporting the company all the better. I love seeing the faces and minds behind the products I enjoy. If there's a docu for other products like the nendo clothes for dolls or other nendo product processes, I think that'd be amazing to see. Overall, great work with the video and the product! It's nice how the artists sound like they are more fulfilled in this workplace environment than other places, so I appreciated that perspective as well :)
