Cromer lel this is true but animation doesn’t need these grueling working conditions and inhumane schedules. Animating frame by frame isn’t the issue here at all no one is complaining about that aspect, the issue is low compensation and work schedules that hardly allow for any sleep or days off. I've watched a lot of great anime recently, but near if not at the very top is the original Little Witch Academia short and Mahoujikake no Parade special. I don't have a lot of money but I will do my best to support this studio because these guys are too fucking cool and I love the determination they have even as they're threatening to fall down from fatigue.
Im actually glad someone made a documentary like this.. You can see how animators struggle in perfecting their art, but at the same time balancing with schedule, and that they have to cooperate with each and every staff they have
5:09 Whoa, this poor dude looks like hasn't left that chair for the past three days and he's only being fed once every 12 hours. I feel sorry for the whole office. No wonder it's called studio trigger.
Yeah but these guys filming the documentary showed up at the very end when everyone's behind schedule. These guys are all tired, but it's not always like this. If they had filmed the first two weeks, probably everyone would look happier and rested, but since everything piled up thanks to the director being perfectionist, they all look bummed out and over-worked. I work in movies and sometimes the schedules can be crazy.. but it's fun anyway. It's not like I'm gonna have a giant smile after not sleeping for 24 hours, doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. Starting a new project and then seeing the finished product are the fun parts, the hard work in between is just that, hard work, but the more you work the better you get at it, so it's also rewarding.
+tabundo001 Just like high school. at first, you have loads of motivation and you are really excited to learn new things, but at the end of the year you are studying for a math exam at 2 a.m. and questioning your sanity. my mind is currently a void filled with equations and formulas and tiredness. Wish me luck. ;-;
i highly doubt its fun to be 2 weeks behind schedule, i think the fun part is when they are done and get to watch all their hard work and amazing effort come to life
I hope while you're worried about these animators, you're also contributing in helping them too by buying their work aka the anime they're working on. Please rethink whenever you're watching anime for free without paying for their hard work
Japan should do the work of creating a streaming service that is functional and modern like the pirate sites. You would at least make ad revenue and I would easily pay a subscription charge. The problem is now that anime is divvied up among content giants like Amazon and Netflix. Produce a package of convenience and great picture/quality, and you would see more money. It's also sad to think that if somebody created an actual patreon for animators, then studio heads would just cut their wages more. Japan as a country doesn't have enough respect or give enough entitlement to working people. They're in the top five economies of the world and yet they treat human beings like this. Eventually Japan has to stop what it's doing and look at itself and address changes to what it sees in the mirror. Seriously, they crave human misery, it seems like to me.
tracehazarrrrd I saw somewhere that current streaming sites actually just support the distributors and sites, not the actual studio and staff. Correct me if I’m wrong, but buying the DVDs/Blu-rays and official merch is the way go I think
I don't agree with your idea, if you do that you will contribute to this endless cycle of people who don't have a decent paid and life by giving the people in power more money.
trigger seems very small in terms of how many animators they have, hopefully they can hire more in the future since the man power is required. Also love how that production assistant has all those awesome kamen rider figures.
I'm so disappointed I let myself lose my fire for real animation. I used to be these guys; loving what I do even though I felt like throwing up every day and night from the stress and overwork. Made the mistake of working stupidly simple, corporate Flash animation jobs for shows I don't care about so I could make enough to survive and now I'm stuck in that loop. Actually, it's probably more that I'm just not capable of organizing myself to create something sustainable from scratch. I really envy them, I want to pour my heart into something I love again but I can't afford to. I'm still grateful for videos like these, I still feel that hope when watching it.
No? It's absolutely sad. They destroy themselves to make something good and get shit pay and recognition for it. A bunch of people saying ''wow they're so hardworking'' means nothing when you're a soulless husk who does nothing but draw and draw all day. It's sad. Working as an artist shouldn't mean destroying yourself.
The real MVPs. I respect anyone who works in any sort of production, but man do anime animators have it rough. They deserve a lot better for the incredible work they do, which reaches many all across the world and inspires even more. Hopefully, conditions get better for them soon. They have my deepest respect.
Omg i never really thought of how hard animating is, i did have an idea but i didnt know it was this bad. However this is very inspirational bcoz now I'll tell myself to draw more slowly and more precisely since i have the time and so that i can make a nice job. But these guys are superhumans, they could finish a drawing that took me two days in ten minutes and make it look perfect while im still there struggling to figure out what went wrong. I should practice more!!!

I suddenly wonder about the supporting team . things like : - how is the paper , pencil, and eraser supplied, and how much used everyday - I see they have a high quality chair, how much do they cost? - small things like printer, lighting etc . basically all management thingies.. without them those animators would be more stressed O.o
there is SO MUCH WORK that is put into animated productions and it's often undermined. props to all those underpaid, hardworking animators, storyboard artists, writers, VAs, and directors!

One day, Joe Schmoe brought his "awesome" digital anime drawing to Japanese animation studio in hope to get hired as a bona fide animator. Recruiter: (After looking at the portfolio) "You draw with digital tools?" "Well that's nice, but we can't accept your work because your draftsmanship doesn't meet our standard (His thought: man, what is this crap?)". Joe: "Working in the anime studio always has been my dream!" Recruiter: "Oh, you still want to work with us?" "In that case, our inbetween department needs people who can do cleanup. However we'll only pay 200 Yen (2 Dollars) per sheet and it has to meet Inbetween Checker's standard no matter what." After working two months at the anime studio as grueling work of cleanup with $300 a month paycheck, Joe quits and found better job at a convenience store. The End. Note: Grammar correction made

The fact that you can finally live a life of your passion should be enough, it's gonna have challenges, but all lives will always have challenges. No exceptions. And fyi, there will always be other studios that treat their employees better than some, as for workloads, that's an animator's life for you. Now the question is: 'Do you believe your love in animating will keep you going regardless?'
@@fyeruze1576 I don't like animating frame by frame but I do want to create my anime and for that I have to be part of this department so that I could understand the procedure but which occupation should I pick from this department apart from animating stuff??
Every anime requires you to animate and you gotta have to do it frame by frame. Relying on tweening will make your work feel unnatural
Cromer lel this is true but animation doesn’t need these grueling working conditions and inhumane schedules. Animating frame by frame isn’t the issue here at all no one is complaining about that aspect, the issue is low compensation and work schedules that hardly allow for any sleep or days off. The anime industry is notorious for how over worked and undervalued its workers are.

17:55. That dude is animating while watching Breaking Bad. Mad respect for him for doing that.
👏👏👏
Respect.
and i used to wish anime eps were 60minutes long
its sad because these people produce amazing work and put a lot of hours yet they are still paid less than most jobs out there...
well this industry is overinflated with so many many competing companies and so many talented people, that at most of the time they almost have the same drawing styles. So of course, work has to be 1000% to be at the top of this industry, and pay goes 0.01%.

I appreciate the Animators work over at Trigger studio and all their staff who contributed to the Making of a great anime.
この方々の頑張りがあって素敵で華やかなアニメを私たちは見れているんだと…再確認。涙出てきた…。

I'd rather doing what I love than the alternative~ Studio Trigger guy
I've watched a lot of great anime recently, but near if not at the very top is the original Little Witch Academia short and Mahoujikake no Parade special. I don't have a lot of money but I will do my best to support this studio because these guys are too fucking cool and I love the determination they have even as they're threatening to fall down from fatigue.
Yeah, i will support them too, i can't give much since i'm still high school student. But i will donate for them, but i just don't know how.

As stressful as this seems .. it also looks like real fun, everyone working in a team to meat a deadline .. animation companies are awesome.
.......i can tell you its not. its stressfull as fuck to be 2 WEEKS behind schedule and rushing to meet the deadline.
+tabundo001 Just like high school. at first, you have loads of motivation and you are really excited to learn new things, but at the end of the year you are studying for a math exam at 2 a.m. and questioning your sanity. my mind is currently a void filled with equations and formulas and tiredness. Wish me luck. ;-;
Michelle Mostovlanski and then you pass
i highly doubt its fun to be 2 weeks behind schedule, i think the fun part is when they are done and get to watch all their hard work and amazing effort come to life

Because im a broke ass nigga 😢
I buy manga and poster at least and watch anime on Netflix some times
tracehazarrrrd I saw somewhere that current streaming sites actually just support the distributors and sites, not the actual studio and staff.
I'm still grateful for videos like these, I still feel that hope when watching it.
watching these animators suffer is a good reminder during finals week that my workload is really not as bad

Wow, animation is a lot of work
especially being hand-drawn
This is honestly inspiring.
HassouTobi Doesnt help when most of them probably watch each episode on a illegal streaming site
Oh..um...well...y'see...

The real MVPs. I respect anyone who works in any sort of production, but man do anime animators have it rough. They deserve a lot better for the incredible work they do, which reaches many all across the world and inspires even more. Hopefully, conditions get better for them soon. They have my deepest respect.
I love how they still have the same problems I have. Drawing faces? Suddenly it's not the day. Oh but today it's the good day for hands!
Always...
Thanks a lot for translating this. I wish there could be more of this :)
I should practice more!!!
i really love how they animated little witch academia too, especially those amazing action scenes and dynamic facial expressions. so looking at behind the scenes makes me feel even more
ive been thinking of the word for awhile now and i still cant find the word for it so i gave up. but thank you so much studio trigger! it was really really an amazing show.

wow....that was so much work put into this. Theses people were determined and i appreciate that. They were working non-stop. Also i absolutely loved who was taking the video. I suddenly wonder about the supporting team . things like :
- how is the paper , pencil, and eraser supplied, and how much used everyday
- I see they have a high quality chair, how much do they cost?
- small things like printer, lighting etc .
basically all management thingies.. without them those animators would be more stressed O.o
there is SO MUCH WORK that is put into animated productions and it's often undermined. props to all those underpaid, hardworking animators, storyboard artists, writers, VAs, and directors!
I think when the convert to digital it would somewhat be easier
@@MobuildToku true, but many of them are still underpaid and work grueling hours.
This is so interesting and educational. It shows you the world of the animation industry and how little they get compensated for these long hours of hard work. This taught me to have patience in the small animatics or animations I make! It times a lot of time and dedication to get stuff done! This has helped me learn much more than any animation tutorial I’ve ever seen, I’m so inspired by everyone on the animation team!
Passion overruns low pay sometimes. I feel as though some very passionate people forget the shit pay because they just absolutely love what they're doing.. I do hope of course that animators get appreciated more in the long run... This is literally spine breaking work that deserves more recognition in the world.
their effort was rewarded, little witch academia is an exceptionally gorgeous looking series
I'm proud of these animators! I wish I could transform the way they think that fast and productive while in the middle of stress...I haven't seen drinking coffee to get them awake
The good thing about japans’s animation is that they help each other even if the animators are from different company. There is no rivalry. Man this is stressful but yeah, if you love what you do, that’ll be enough to keep you going. I salutes these guys. ❤️
They all look so sad and exhausted af someone let my bby's rest
omg this is just the movie right?
Imagine the stress from the anime series ... these people are legendary
i appreciate every single episode and all the work that's gone into it, and thank you to production team, they've worked so damn hard
I love how most people here is like "ITS HAND DRAWN?!!!!" well yeah.. what do you expect ugly ass 3DCG like berserk?
BERSERK WAS AMAZING!
Story wise yeah but the animation is just horrible
Tru dat but hey its better then wat we can do at least appericate it cause they worked there asses off lol
Digital doesn't just mean 3d animation, you can draw in a digital animation too. I think most people would expect this rather then literally drawing by hand a la pencil and paper.
yea XD
The animators look depressed and dull.. But i love Little Witch Academia and it proves that all their hard work has succeeded in creating a fantastic series 💖
The animation on this anime was amazing, i was in love with it, the effort put on it really paid out
One day, Joe Schmoe brought his "awesome" digital anime drawing to Japanese animation studio in hope to get hired as a bona fide animator.
Recruiter: (After looking at the portfolio) "You draw with digital tools?" "Well that's nice, but we can't accept your work because your draftsmanship doesn't meet our standard (His thought: man, what is this crap?)".
Joe: "Working in the anime studio always has been my dream!"
Recruiter: "Oh, you still want to work with us?"
"In that case, our inbetween department needs people who can do cleanup. However we'll only pay 200 Yen (2 Dollars) per sheet and it has to meet Inbetween Checker's standard no matter what."
After working two months at the anime studio as grueling work of cleanup with $300 a month paycheck, Joe quits and found better job at a convenience store.
The End.
Note: Grammar correction made
Ha, what inspired this comment
Oh it''s just my way of remark on people who react to fact that their favorite animation is drawn with pencil and paper, not fancy digital tools.
Basically, it sucks to be an animator in Japan. You're overworked and you're paid like shit.
Lol, just like me :,^) I'll never forget how it felt to be a modern slave
Hyun Park "fancy digital tools." tweening and fbf digital are two different things, just so you guys know
The guy at 5:05 looks like he's running on tea and fumes.
their faces just look as if they don't know what in the world is going on anymore..
so much hardwork... give them a raise man :(
"Whats happening exaclty?"

NO NOT THE HANDS AND FEET
one of the beauty and pluses about my witch academia is it's beautiful animation and relativity to kevment and even over exaggerating postures and poses I really like it
and also I live that the woman saying "it's the same what the hell is different" and he's like "it's the finger tips " it shows how much attention to detail this anime shows
Is this what they call a modern day sweatshop?
+June Hera Sure the working conditions are shit, and the pay is shit but it's still hard work.
HellishMess I thought they were payed a decent amount
+June Hera They get payed for every frame they do, they don't get payed commission. A frame averages around One hundred to Five hundred Yen (Approximately One to Five Dollars.
+HellishMess then it would make sense for teens to take this job as a "summer job" like how teens here work at McDonald's but are focused on studying for their future job
+June Hera That is a very silly assumption, animation takes time, effort and is generally a skillful job, you can't just walk in with no experience.
this is a deserve like and was added to my personal favorites.love how everyone was included to show the struggles, determination, inspiration and teamwork it took to make beautiful animation.respect the hand drawn work and the rest of the staff.

Great documentary. Shows how people involved work really hard in order to give us the moments of pleasure watching such a great work. Great Job showing us that!! :D
Many respects with Studio Trigger a small company to an outstanding quality content
mang the stress was overwhelming, but they got each other , otherwise it would have been suicidal, a lot of times we took animation for granted, there was so many countless effort behind each scene each frame each 23 minutes, it really makes you think, yet some people dropping this show, they missed out so many good stuff, hell is not like the studio force them to pay a dime, i really don't get it why studio always made themself finished something in such a short time, it will took a toll on their worker's mental health and physical health. yea i get it the revisioner want it to be perfect, i can't say i glad that happened, cuz look at them, is so painful, it felt like your brain just melted and you ceased to even have basic brain function.
I am getting stressed out just watching this. I've also committed to buying the blue ray.
