This is something I always wonder.
When a manufacturer says "we are retiring this car because it did not sell well", did anyone check to see how was this car being priced by the dealerships?

Has there ever been an AWD mid engine car? There aren't many mids to think of. Maybe a Lamborghini but those aren't even real cars. They're more like a cross between art,space ship and vibrating marital aid.
I'd be happy with a slightly updated gen 2 MR2 with electric hub motors in front for under $30k.

Who will actually build them? BMW? Subaru? Toyota hasn't made a good car this century.
I wanted a Supra for years and when I recently priced a new one locally, the otd is close to 70k. The new Tesla model 3 performance really upped its game offering more power and suspension upgrades, as well as the refreshed look. At 47.5k or 52k otd, I couldnt pass it up especially since it checked the boxes like 4 doors, safety, storage, comfort and that 17 speaker sound system. Ill never track a car and I dont get out to the canyons much so for far less money, i got a quicker awd car that has been a blast to drive. Sure it will depreciate faster but at the price and apr % and low insurance cost, it makes more sense financially for me. I hope they dont price out their potential customers with these exciting new offerings.

Electric has significant bottle necks. Also carbon neutral fuel exists and will become more and more common as the price is driven down.
If they overprice the MR2 they are fools! A Porsche owner/buyer isn’t moving to a Toyota. Keep it at 45k at 60k you can get a C8 & that’s NO comparison to a 4 banger MR2.
If they can push the price into the $30ks, that would be amazing.

@@EnhancedTrashBin Easier said than done. They’ll add that stuff to appeal to more than just enthusiasts. They need to sell these things to keep them alive, and if they don’t have stuff normal people want, they won’t survive long.
@@ludicrousspeeds4938 Sadly that is true, but even if they did still try to appeal to normal people, it's not like those consumers will buy it over camrys/corollas because of price tag and especially people that prefer bigger cars. Not to mention there is way cheaper options like Nissan (although they're mostly crap).

They do understand. That's what the 86 is. The 86 is cheap because the costs are shared with Subaru. I doubt any low volume, 100% in house designed and built vehicle will be cheap anymore.

True. EVs are only good for the environment with the condition that the source of energy in your city is clean to a certain degree.
That being said most people buy them since gas is so fucking expansive right now
Toyota is going to be killing off their model before it's even released if they price the MR2 at the $60-70k range.
Also the MR2 has already been hinted to be the FT-SE from a while back, and the Celica has been mostly in the dark by Toyota. The S-FR has been rumored to go into production since they are building a vehicle with Daihatsu and not Mazda. That vehicle is to be priced under the $20k range, "supposedly".
When Subaru talks about how it's low slung boxer engines have a lower center of gravity, I wonder how well it could work in a mid engine design like the MR2.

A fairly priced MR2 could be a game changer. It would be such a unique offering just as its predecessors that it would be tough for enthusiasts to ignore.
If it's all wheel drive, wouldn't that be an MR4? LOL. This is so exciting. Toyota hasn't really made a decent sporty car in a long time (Supra = BMW, GR86 = Subaru). But $70,000? Come on! Like I have a hard time finding a nice car at $70k. Not sure this is really going back to the roots. More like going back to the trunk.

I'd love a Celica or MR 2 as I'm single middle aged and admired those cars when I was growing up 90s early 2000s the only other car I wish Toyota would revive is the Camry Solara though in that case I'm partial to the Camry because my late maternal grandmother owned two as her last cars and younger brother inherited the last one when she stopped driving for med reasons in 2016 has less than 40k miles on it at 20 yrs. old

What a shame that Toyota has lost its way as a value brand. At $70k the MR2, or as you describe an MR4 is asinine. It will be an epic failure like the Tacoma.
For that cash you could just buy an older supra at that point...
Too bad they won't do a split version with one having the 3cyl, 6-speed manual, RWD to keep cost and weight down and excitement max, then a GR version with the 2.0L, AWD hybrid, DCT.

It would be like a Celica and a Supra for today both on the MR platform with mid-engine. I'd go for the first one, not just for the cost but for the thrill of driving. The Celica (cell-eee-ka) will be a hybrid with electric forward energy. Just a Prius with more power. The MR2 will be like a mini Lambo vewueltuero. Celica will be 250hp or less. MR2 will be 300.
EV motors are simply superior, but we are acting just like when the original ICE engines started replacing horse drawn buggies.
