Shout out to Mel Tores, Sean Conway and Sam Sherwood for their support for this channel!
I was a Remo guy for about 22 yrs. When I opened my music store and started carrying D'Addario and their family of products is when I first tried Evans. Love them! Lots of options for whatever style you play and the people behind the products are fantastic. The dealer/customer support from them is second to none.
I use them too, no overtones, durable, versatile, PERFECT! :)
I've always been a fan of the hydraulics it's a shame that they stopped making them for about a decade. I am extremely happy that they're back
I use these heads my self and love them great review Ben
I've tried them out recently and I instantly fell in love. A lot of a attack, no overtones and over the top sustain, easy to tune, no need for dampening, durable and not to mention they look badass, perfect for my taste. I don't get people who say they sound absolutely dead, they may not be for everyone, but with some tuning they sound damm good.
I love these drumheads ! Thanks for demonstrating !
Think it's awesome that you're an open handed player! I play both crossed and open handed, just whatever feels natural for me. Awesome kit setup and amazing sound!🤘🏼
Those sound pretty good. I have been using the evans ec2 sst clear heads and I am in love with them.
So I just found out why I'm not getting that type of same sound out of my toms. On D'Addario's wesbite under Evans Drumheads when you select Hydraulics there's a black tab on the right side that says "learn more" and it says that while all the different colors are all 2ply heads the thickness of the heads are different. So for black: 6.5mil & 7.5mil, red & blue: 7mil & 7mil, clear(or glass): 6.5mil & 6.5mil. So in a way, yes! Each color does give you a slightly different tone out of the drum. Now that I found that out I'll soon be switching my clear heads with the red Hydraulics
Ben! can you make a drum setup video? Your kit looks awesome and and sounds amazing! and would love to hear for example what size toms you have :P Keep up the awesome work!
Bass drum sounds amazing! Room also sounds great!
Hey Ben, awesome video what kinda tension do you have your toms tuned to they sound great.
great review cheers Ben. When I changed recently it was a toss up between onyx and hydraulic. I went for onyx and they sound great but now I know how the hydraulics sound there's a chance they'll be my next ones. Your review of the promark oak sticks was spot on and I bought some. So glad I did so keep reviewing stuff dude, we need you :)
Good Video Evans Is My Favorite Drum Heads'S Mark
Yep, that confirms it, hydraulics are sick! Awesome video!
I've been playing someone else's kit with these heads.i don't think I'd put them on my own kit but for the small boomy garage space we play in they are perfect.the drums sound like plastic tubs to my ears in this video!
They look awesome
I’m buying these they sound deep and pure and easy to tune
I really liked the spund! What size are your toms? The tuning interval is amazing!
I own a vintage Ludwig Blue Oyster Peal five piece drum set. I use a Ludwig Black Beauty smear drum. I have the Evens Black Hydraulic drum heads and love the sound I get from the heads.
I noticed a lot of people are saying they sound to dead or too dry that's because they're going after that 70s sound when most drummers weren't using bottom heads on their tom-toms. also quick question are you using it on your Kick Drum as well
Those would look sick on my Mapex Armory kit in Magma finish. I also have the black colorsound cymbals from Paiste :-)
Currently got the clear Hydraulics with the Reso 7s on my toms and while they sound nice when tuned I still find myself putting at least one Drumtac on all the toms and am looking for a low sounding set of toms without having to use dampening unless I really want an even more dead sound. Those sounded nice in my opinion!. Basically I want the punvh and attack I get out of my kick drum(which has almost no resonance) in my toms too, just big, punchy, attack sounding🤘🏻
Ben,
Are you using them for your Reso heads too? Or just the Batter heads?
I really like using the hydraulic head on the snare simply because it's so easy to tune up, there's a lot less hassle. My go to heads for toms is emperor over ambassador, punchy sound with buckets of tone
Cool review and they look great :)
What do you use to tune your heads especially with the Hydraulic heads, Evans Torque key, DrumDial, Tune-Bot? Also what sizes are your drums?
Have some clear hydraulics on my 18" & 16" floor toms, and these have a truly unique sound, something that would belong in industrial metal, really punchy with a super low but short reverb, probably just needs a different mic than you would use for most floor toms. One thing I would say is that after about a year the oil in between starts to clump together so you'll have just one big spot of oil off to the side, you can't fix it and it kinda ruins the sound but if you perform you probably change your heads more often.
What Evans bass drum heads are you playing with? Found videos (like this one) where you're talking about what heads you're using for your toms and your snare drum but not your bass drum
Bennnnn! What bass drum heads you using atm? Sound punchy as heck!
Hi are you using Hydraulics on the reso's too? thanks
Ben whats the best tuning HZ for my 14 in snare with a red batter hydraulic skin?
I got the 12 in and 16 in floor toms sounding bad ass but I was wondering what
would be the best tuning for my hydraulic snare....
i play the black evans hydraulic heads on my 1965 Rogers kit. looks great against the Champaign sparkle shells and i don't need to use the built in mufflers on the drums.
hey Ben, that's a nice UA-cam channel you've got there.
it would be
a shame
if someone
asked you to cover Shutterspeed by Karnivool ?
My favorite drum skin. I use them on my 12, 16 tom & on my 22 bass drum as well on my 14 in snare drum.
They're perfect for me.
Good job Ben, good job sir....
+Gabino Garcia they are great, particularly for live I found. I've been experimenting with coated heads recently for recording
Yes sir. My main purpose of sticking to these bad boys is because they're easy to tune and don't loose tuning as quick as other skins. Another reason is what you mentioned, no need to damp them at all!
I have my set up inside my house, which has hard wood floors and a lot of open space. A 50 foot ceiling, the sound is muddy and short. But. sounds amazing and loud. I even have one on my 14 in snare! Just on top! All my drums have the same old skins on the bottom part. I'm a poor drummer and can't afford bottom hydraulic skins Ben Minal.
I like your You Tube channel. Thanks for giving me the idea to install an upside down splash on my crash cymbal. Works amazingly well. Looks cool too!!!
Keep on rocking Ben Minal !!!!!
+Gabino Garcia awesome thanks!
You put them on the batter AND resonance side?
Just did this to my toms, put Hydraulics on the batter and reso heads and the attack and low-ness is really really nice if that's what you're lookong for
I noticed in the comments that you used these for both the batter AND resonant sides? (which isnt mentioned in the video afaik) If so, ..no wonder they sound so dead! I used to play remo pinstripes but with a thin single ply resonant and they sounded slightly muted from the hydraulic but would still give a deep tone with ample sustain from the reso.
I prefer the ringy G2 and G1 mix
What wood is your kit? I can only imagine these on an oak kit...
What head do u have at the bottom of the 8 Tom another hydro?
are you using them on the reso side too?
I have these myself there great! There don't sound as fat and dead as mine probably because you have it on the reso side. They last a long time and sound great I recommend them.
really going to order some red hydraulics for my Pearl reallyyy soon!
I’ve used them since the 80’s and they’re my go-to. Great for live as I need quick attack and quick decay to make my statement over the guitars and vocals.
Plus: Anyone saying “they sound like cardboard boxes” needs tuning lessons. As their ease of tuning and specific use sound are the reason they’ve been around for over 40 years.
It would be cool to use them on the rack toms. Then for the floor tom use some with longer sustain. The floor tom is the only thing I don't like.
How do you do your hair? Awesome vid BTW.
Hey Ben I’m your personal option what do you find the difference is between the red and blue? Are the blues better for larger toms or is it just colour preference?
Purely aesthetic - tone is the same
Every time I try something new I end up disappointed and go back to my normal set up after a couple weeks. Then have heads with two weeks on them laying in my room for months until I finally throw them away. However I will still experiment when new heads come out, one day maybe they'll be something that'll stick for me.
Hmmm these on Catalina maple.... EC RESOs ....hmmm Let's try.
Wait, when he said that there was a red under the 8 does that mean that he had hydraulics as both his reso and batter heads? Wouldn't it be better to have a single ply reso?
Does that also mean he had all of them like that?
The finish on your kit reminds me of Ringo Starr's
Yeah I know what you mean
I'm quite tempted on testing them out,
right now I'm using cooated G1's and managed them to sound dead-dry - or at least this is what I consider dry: ua-cam.com/video/k9eBZz4Cuh0/v-deo.html
wonder how much more dead these hydraulic can sound :D
heeyy, no comments yet... maybe it's time for me to say FIRST! haha, always wanted to do that :)
ben have you tried using black chrome heads. they are made similar to the hydraulic heads but in my opinion much better when tuned right
ObscureFlea they aren't similarly made. Black chrome has the bottom ply as a black, and the top as a clear. No internal dampening. They are really great though.
Music Serpent they still have the oil in them so yes there is dampening
Hydraulics are the only drumheads with oil between the two plies!
I personally like the hydraulic heads. Use the hydraulic glass on the kit i use at the guitar player of my band's place
do i really need to get them for the bottoms of my toms?
no
Love Evans but these will be last item on their menu I would plan to buy - great YT channel just subbed - think these heads are a throwback to the worst of the 70s!
which wood is your drums made of ?
The DW Collectors Series is Maple. Thanks for watching!
I'm wondering why don't they make these heads in a coated version :/
Yeah, it can be right
Márton Kardos they make black coated heads but not coated hydraulic. I'm currently rocking a white coated dry head on my snare. sounds great with the hydraulic heads on toms
Yeah, I know, it was not really about the color though. I'm still rocking some Ambassadors, but as soon as I get a little more money, I'll get some Evans heads for my toms
reso?
Same - hydraulics
@@BenMinal I really dig the low-end sound of the Hydraulics! Definitely gonna try them as both batter and reso heads for my first set of Evans heads🤘🏼
i think they sound not very good, but still a good video!
Not of a fan of the wet dry tom sound everyones doing now. Almost to the point it completely makes the shell material irrelevant. Like people who play bubinga and mute the drums. You might as well play a poplar kit with cotton balls in every tom lol. It has its place in some music, but in rock, so many drummers are trending so its so hard to stand out. I hate always referring to MP but thats a drummer that when you hear the kit, you know who it is. Perfect resonance, depth and tone to toms. It fills the music much more to. Drums have to sing a lil bit to fill the ambient void in music, especially with guitars.
FanaticalDrummer I completely agree with you especially when someone splashes out £5000 on a dw kit and completely throw away the reason it costs that much. These heads work for me as my kit is a £155 kit I bought after my 14th seven years ago. On a kit like that with somewhat unpleasant overtones these heads go a long way
What happens if you blow the head and the oil goes everywhere (insides of your shells) 😬
sooo how would these heads do in a setting other than rock? say, worship? haha
+DB Drum Covers I think they'd be good if you're looking for a fat controlled sounds, but they're not very resonant so it depends on your needs
i prefer remo cs
I currently have a Remo Controlled Sound coated head on my snare drum, and while I like it I want something with more attack and I havent been able to find that sound I hear in my head with Remo
Good to hear your input, really not my thing though. Sound completely lifeless, both on attack and decay, almost like you're playing underwater. Probably makes them a sound tech's dream though!
They mic up really well...that's about it
sounds too dead for me :)
Sound dead. EC2sssssssssss ftw
Maybe try EC2s on the bottom as reso heads and Hydraulics as the batter so it doesnt sound as dead, if that's a sound you're going for.
They sound too dry and dead
They should rename then THUDMASTER (tm)
I agree. He did say in a previous video that he put these on top AND bottom which I feel like is a little overkill. If he put some G1s or something underneath I bet they'd sing a little more.
ya, its not just to do with the heads, tuning has a huge affect of how they're gunna sound!n I'm not saying they won't sound more dampened than regular heads but tuning can make a huge difference!
Yea I put the genera resonate head on for the reso on tight then u can turn this head up or down. They sound fat and big I love these heads these and the black chrome.
Dislike for putting them as resos too... Totally unfair test.. Sorry Ben
WHY WRITE THE NAME - IF NO PLASTIC DEMONSTRATION IS GENERAL? ... ...
THIS IS A FULL FULL!
WHAT CAN NOT HEAR RED PLASTICS ??? ...
THIS IS VERY BAD !
Sorry Leonid I don't understand your comment
Lol they sound crap! Hydraulic oil filled heads have been out since the 70s anyone that uses them need to put them on a mid range kit... Don't waste your time taking away the resonating drum sounds... Because that's what it we I'll do.. I wouldn't recommend putting them on top kit.. Can't see any pro drummer using them
Heads are very choosy when trying out on good kits... You need to know what makes that drum sing out... And I mean trying all makes of head... But be honest coated from old school the one that really works.. Your drum sound.. Rest are to plastic in sound.. Hope you share my opinion lol. Or am I talking bollocks.. Haha.. One to their own I suppose..
I own two massive high end double-bass 80's Tama kits with Hydraulics on all the tom tom batter heads. I vary the thickness of the bottom resonant heads by going double-ply on all the big drums and floor toms. I upgraded to die-cast batter hoops to maintain tuning integrity and to withstand punishing rimshots from oversized Corpmaster drumsticks. My drums sound massive!!
Listen to Twiztid's drummer Drayven Davidson. He has Hydraulic heads on both the batter and reso sides of his toms and while sounding thudy and punchy they give a nice fat sound with lots of low-end. Personally that's what I like in my toms. Some tone but lots of low-end attack.
