  • This came out slightly narrow looking (even for 4:3 ratio), so, if you can, use the 'Stretch' option on your TV to widen the picture a little, it will be easier to watch ;-). Fascinating in court action & testimony by the BBC from New York in 1996. Even if you're not a fan, the testimony is really interesting & in some parts hilarious. watch out for the lady with grey hair; and don't miss Joan's reactions at the end!

    It is an indictment of the justice system in the US that the judge collides with witnesses to ridicule and humiliate Joan and her work (e.g. comments alluding to the fantastical elements of the novel and their lack of familiarity with Monaco). However the jury showed their integrity by seeing through that. Joan is familiar with Monaco.

    I forgot about this, so good and inspirational to revisit, the shift she was forced to make in order to win the case, proving that she was both a sweetheart and a great actress, she had to channel Alexis once again to put a stop to the slander she had to put up with, the difference was like night and day, she went from the very sweet and down to earth Joan, to the fabulous, confident and strong Alexis, in a way those are qualities she already possessed, she just needed Alexis to give her that much needed confidence boost. She was so amazing on that last day on court, what a joy to watch after watching her being humiliated by those lawyers on previous days. I love Joan very much, i've enjoyed her talent and beauty all my life and she'll always have a piece of my heart, what an unforgettable fabulous woman

    When you pay an upfront fee, you take a risk, I.e. that you may not like the book. She delivered it and I think that by then they believed that the market was saturated and they would have preferred not to publish. Tough. The contract was the contract. The fact that the style might have not been to the editors taste doesn’t mean it breached the contract.

    Dame Joan should have been more like Alexis, who wouldn't have suffered what the defence lawyers did. Alexis wouldn't have let them get away with the things they said. But I'm happy that she won the case.

      Mahuika Anderson I know what you mean, I've thought that, and it would have been great fun to watch, but, the jury may have gone against her, thinking she was nasty or acting, so being herself was the best bet and as you see, she's actually quite a softy 😘

      Alexis doesn’t live in a world of unscripted dialogue. Everything Alexis said was designed to counter what the writers had designed the other character to say to her.

Bottom line, you can tell Joan is truthful.

    Her 2nd novel *Desire, love, hate* was a turkey so Random House wanted to dump her and used the "subpar" manuscript as a smoke screen. Basically this was a trial about whether a book is good or bad which is a question of each and every's personal taste.

    • @thebadtemperedbrit
      @thebadtemperedbrit  4 роки тому +1

      Love, Desire & Hate, wasn't that bad as far as I remember & it's still on my bookshelves! Joan was right. if they thought it was that poor, they should've offered more help, in the end it only made them look bad & they lost a money spinner, a lesson learned for the publishing industry.

      @@thebadtemperedbrit I don't want to bag her but I for one was puzzled how weak DLH was in light of her debut Prime Time. • @thebadtemperedbrit

      @@BoraBoraSharkBoy I'm sorry I don't know the term 'bag her' & just to note it's LDH not DLH. I don't know anything about internal family rivalries, but as Jackie's estimated net worth was $180 million, I'm not sure why she'd be resentful, also I do know that other than normal family tiffs, the sisters loved each other very much. It's quite possible Jackie helped with the first book, but more than that, no. This is the story, no more, no less, Joan's great, but she's not a great author & she got in too deep & it went a bit wrong - that's it!

    • @BoraBoraSharkBoy

      @@thebadtemperedbrit (Sh!t)bagging someone is quite bad and you're right it's Love, Desire, Hate, not DHL. I just renembered it's 3 and in my head Desire came before Love which could turn to Hate. Jackie reportedly made a remark of Joan's lesser sales compared to her own but dunno how serious that was. Maybe just sisterly banter.

      @@BoraBoraSharkBoy I'm familiar with most modern idioms, but that one's just passed me by ;-). Jackie & Joan are Brits don't forget & so making sarcastic, bitchy comments is just an everyday occurrence, if you're that sort of Brit, the nastier the comment, the more clever & funny it's regarded. I have all Joans books, & they're all just a bit of fluff & not to be taken seriously, so I think the big losers here were the publishers for losing their sense of humour & paying Joan too much in the first place!!
