Years back when I was visiting Wellington, I was able to pay for drinks with Australian dollars without any hesitation from the bartender (I had run out of local currency). That would never happen in Australia if the situation was reversed.
Maybe because the Aussie dollar is worth more. I was in Boston though years ago and ran out of US dollars at a bar. The owner had a board with notes in all sorts of currencies including an A$1.00. I swapped a A$2.00 note for another round of 4 draft beers with him. 👍😂

It's like a sibling rivalry, despite the occasional disagreement we are quick to forget it and enjoy being whanau/family. Hey we live in the two greatest countries on Earth.
I'm Filipino and from the Philippines and while watching this (because I'm planning to go to study abroad), I just realized it's similar to how Americans and Canadians are being compared to each other or how Japanese people are compared to South Koreans. It just amazes me that despite our diverse differences, this is what makes us similar to each other as humans-by comparing with each other haha. BTW, great video sir! 👍
Hi from Australia 🇦🇺 🦘. Australia has a lot more aggression such as a lot more nature destroyed by humans. Massive open-cut mines, Snowy Mountains Scheme (where a whole ecosystem of water is artificially diverted over a mountain range), desalination plants, deserts turned into farmland via irrigation schemes. Also a lot of other aggressive things like industrial scale farming (vineyards, olive groves and almond orchards the sizes of small countries), live animal export, barramundi farms so isolated they require fly-in fly-out workers. Australia is more aggressive than New Zealand in many aspects 😊.
New Zealand in the past 20 years has been turned into one big Dairy farm. Their rivers and lakes are the most polluted in the developed world. Ecoli has infected 75% of its lands, nitrate levels in drinking water is dangerously high and bowel cancer is going throught he roof. The PURE NZ campaign is PURE BS! 85% of forrests in NZ are also invase forgein species, much of their birdlife has been decimated too.
I am Japanese and am married to a kiwi. We’ve been living in Japan since my husband moved to Japan but we would like to move to either Australia or New Zealand, so it was a great video for me to get to know more about 2 countries 🥺❤️
I'm an Aussie. Apart from the differences in Aussie and Kiwi accents, I think Kiwis are quieter and more socially progressive. We tend to be louder, blunt and less socially progressive (though that depends a lot on our age and where we live).
wholeheartedly agree. As part of that more progressive stance, NZ is also more racially integrated and developing a culture that is a blend of Polynesian (mainly Maori) and European. Sadly that’s not true in Australia, where the Aboriginal culture and peoples are largely absent from the overall society. I hope that changes!
@@lindascott6902but Australia is far more diverse and statistically more multi cultural. And NZ natives still face issues like Aboriginals or any other indigenous culture that has become a minority.
@@Alunticstalkedme4072 that’s not true. NZ has citizens from a large number of cultures. Australia has treated their indigenous people terribly - and still does, with voting rights only bestowed in the 1960s, no treaty, and little constitutional recognition. While rave relations are not perfect in New Zealand, the welfare of indigenous Kiwis is far superior to that of indigenous Aussies. White Australians should be horrified at their behaviour
Australian pav has passionfruit on top. The one you showed is from New Zealand (Chinese gooseberries). In Aus we have a large wool industry so we have to shear our sheep. In InZid they don't shear their sheep with innybody.
Interesting just to see the difference in appearances of the average demographic you chose. I think the biggest difference is the culture. NZ has a dominant Maori cultural influence but is also a melting pot of multiple cultures and seems more culturally inclusive. Australia is basically a place Kiwis come to for work and lifestyle so that says a lot about both countries I think. I'm a Kiwi living in Australia. And yes, the Kiwis invented the pav. Great video Alex. I'm loving your travel vlogs lately too! Thanks so much.
@@petefluffy7420 why does it matter? It's just a f...d up merengue covered in cream and fruit - let NZ have it. Australia invented WiFi, blackbox flight recorders, seatbelts, we can let go of the Pav
As an Aussie I always notice how many things that are common place in Australia are rare or totally absent in New Zealand. It’s just a reflection of the different ethnic mix of the populations, not just the first nations people, but from the early days of European/Asian settlement to the current day. The historical Irish influence is everywhere in Australia, similarly the impact of immigration from countries like Germany, eastern Europe, and of the course the Mediterranean. The middle eastern influence is also pretty noticeable in a lot of Australian cities. And of course, there are China Towns that go back to the mid 1800s. In comparison New Zealand has been shaped by much narrower cultural influences. I’m not from Sydney, but I haven’t found people there to be “rude” or “aggressive.” Busy, in a hurry, or time poor, typically yes, but that’s not “rude,” or “aggressive.” In relaxed settings, they are as friendly and open as people from anywhere else, including New Zealand.
Funny that so many of the people you interviewed said that the accents were the most notable distinction between Aussies and Kiwis, yet to my North American (Canadian) ears, they sound quite similar. But, then again, ive heard Aussies especially often say that they have a hard time telling the difference between Canadian and American accents.
Great vlog. That was fun. I'd say some other differences are that Aotearoa has friendlier animals and is less vast. Australia has a lot of desert area that's uninhabitable. Love that even some of the Aussies think the pavlova originated in NZ.
I don't know how anybody can confuse two countries and to not put New Zealand on the map that's really rude and wrong... I can see why most people are saying that Aussies are always in a hurry especially when they live in Sydney because it's kind of the same thing as people that live in New York City such as Manhattan they tend to be very snobby and very quick... I enjoyed this video very much thank you Alex❤👍

Anna Pavlova (the famous Russian Ballet dancer) visited Australia before visiting New Zealand. And when you consider that just about every country she had visited so far, had also named a cake, or some food related item before she ever got to either Australia or New Zealand. Its already a moot point. And then there is the fact that the recipes are slightly different too, and finally the fact that communication between countries was difficult. No one would waste money on a overseas telegram, just to discuss cake recipes, as other news was far more appropriate and important. So we probably both decided to jump in on the cake renaming bandwagon, that was already well established well before she got here anyway. And then there is the fact that we bothdo share some similarities too, so we both probably thought of the same sort of cake recipe (which apparently wasn't new in the first place anyway) in which to name in her honour. So since she visited Australia first, we came up with it first. The Kiwis would have had no idea, and so did the same thing, the fact that the recipes are similar is very likely merely consistence. It doesn't change the fact that we named that particular type of desert in honour after Anna Pavlova's visit before the Kiwis. That's a fact. But as I said, she already had numerous things (such as cakes etc) named after her by this point, its not exactly a new thing, nor was the original recipes either. The cake got its name from a famous person, that's why its famous, and she visited us Aussies first. So you have your answer. P.S. Do Aussies claim other people and things (from New Zealand) as being from Australia. Absolutely. Buts that's only because we like them so much. They are ore family after all.
Lamington is 1000% an Aussie invention. It was named after Qld's eighth governor, Lord Lamington, who served from 1896 - 1901. Recipes were published in Qld Country Life newspaper as early as the late 1800's. Pavlova is a little more contentious. And Russell Crowe is a Kiwi dick!
Canadian here, I find the differences interesting that everyone is saying. Reminds me of the differences between Americans and Canadians! Was a great video to watch
On the Australia side, chef Herbert “Bert” Sachse is said to have created the pavlova at Perth's Esplanade Hotel in 1935, and it was named by the house manager, Harry Nairn, who remarked it was “as light as pavlova”.
You need to do a ice block and I cream on a stick and cone review! Choc bars, jelly tips ,frujus etc !! To truely show the world the essence of New Zealand!
I think you spoke to more people of student age and left wing in New Zealand (based off Wellington) and in Australia older on average people. So this would make a difference with answers as well I think
Tried my best to speak to all sorts of people. Those were the people who were keen to talk. Maybe that says something too? For every person I got on camera I had to ask 10
The Lord of the Rings films were filmed in New Zealand and The Matrix films were filmed in Australia which actor Hugo Weaving starred in both franchises.
I have not been to either country so, no comment. I will say if Australians think Sydney is too much work and hustle, they should come to NYC. Also, those mullets would be a big no go here. It's fun to see how they are as you say, siblings who like to give each other a dig.

Melting pot for both are very different, we embrace diversity and inclusion more. BTW Manuka honey will always be FOREVER NZ.😂❤
I’ve lived in most of the states in Australia and the best is Perth, friendly Aussies and silly money $$; worst Sydney, too fast too furious. In NZ best is Coromandel beaches, sea views, snow capped mountains, worst is Riccarton, liquid-faction. Happy sabbath 😇
''Manurka honey' originated from the tea tree, which is indigineous to Australia. New Zealand stole our trees, and honey, and renamed them Manurka, to shut out Australian honey. Now we sell it as Australian Manurka honey. lol.
The Pav was invented on a farm in the South Island. Definitely New Zealand. I also think the Kiwis are more sporty than the Aussies. Aussies throughout my life time have claimed a lot of what has come out of New Zealand on the world market, as their own. Living in Canada I heard on radio there one morning an Aussie claiming Peter Snell as their own. When Peter put NZ on the athletic world map.
@@elahhale9057 Manuka honey is just honey gathered from a tea tree plant native to both NZ and east coast OZ. Aus's honey from there is exactly the same, but no, NZ wants to give it a fancy name and charge a king's ransom.
I enjoyed that a lot. Aussies are hilarious and all jokes aside, couldn’t think of a better country to be a neighbour to. I feel like we got our own South Pacific vibe going on and while we are different in most ways, we are very similar in others. Aussie accents sound like sweaty balls tho.

As an Aussie, I absolutely love New Zealand and Kiwis in general. We both have our differences lol I have worked with several kiwis over the years though that come here and act as though the country owes them something - speaking with other mates in different parts of Australia they have agreed. So maybe change that attitude to those who do 👊🏻😂 In saying that I have also worked with some absolute legends too, and the good ones work hard and are all about family! The Maori culture is amazing and seemingly well respected to our Indigenous, who are currently being used as pawns via the Government. Anyways, cheers Alex. You’re looking well brother!
I think the racist Australian policy visa changes of the mid 1990's designed to block Islanders using NZ as a back door into Australia lead to a lot of unnecessary issues for Kiwis in Australia regardless of ethnicity, and it never worked. Did you know if a ex NZ couple living in Australia for say 10+ years "permanently" on a so called "temporary" Special category visa 444 have a child , that child is not legally an Australian, freaken born in Australia!. Luckily the current Australian government has corrected most of the issues in the last few months so complaining will end. Basically if Kiwis have lived in Australia for 5+ years they can now apply for citizenship the same as Aussies in NZ. Australia has only had a small net gain form NZ over the last decade , a large drop from prior decades, a combination of Australia being a little less attractive and NZ picking up.

It would be better to compare new Zealand to say Victoria, to get a comparitive size. Australia is so much bigger. Looks like Australians are more complimentary towards New Zealanders than visa versa.
ChCh earthquake showed how much Oz loves their NZ brothers. We went and helped as soon as possible. They run us down over rugby and we stir them over cricket. My best Aussie mate moved to NZ when he married a Kiwi sheila. He misses AFL most of all and is hanging out to return.
We don't love NZ. Australia sends aid, and help to every country. We have a connection with NZ, because of ANZAC, nothing more. New Zealanders have been abusing our hospitality for years.
Māori culture is a big difference and very much imbued in Aotearoa life. Unlike our native cousins in Australia, we acknowledge Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Māori version of the Treaty of Waitangi) as our treaty with the British.
One factor that may influence people's responses is that Kiwi's have a slightly higher level of insecurity about their country compared to Australians and do need that (re)validation, even though many aspects of New Zealand are in fact great. The general confidence levels are broadly higher in Australia, but not to the extent of the Americans. However, in the sample of Australian interviewees, it was interesting to see many Australian concede certain claims to New Zealand, yet no Kiwis conceded anything to Australia (other than cost of living, wages). That speaks to the confidence aspect. Be more confident in yourselves Kiwis!!!
Tena koutou katoa, no offence or disrespect intended towards your channel or viewers. The biggest difference is, Te Reo Maori is one of two official languages of NZ, the other being Sign Language. This reminds me of the discussion we have around here in the Rio de la Plata, about who invented mate, or tango, between Argentina and Uruguay. But definitely, no offense to the little brothers, NZ and UR, are provinces of the main nations 😅😂
1. Ways indigenous culture is treated…….2. Landscapes ( Oz is mainly desert while NZ is green) …….3. Societal attitude (NZ is humble with Tall Poppy syndrome, whereas Oz tends to be vocal with Pride …. 4. Kiwis far more laid back and far too used to poor customer service…Aussies will let you know fast if something isn’t good. ( I dived into some that prolly get lash back on lol) As a kiwi, I love some of the Aussie traits and this is why we can both have each others backs…we see and can laugh to each other about the good and the bad.
I think point 1 is more about how the different indigenous cultures view and nurture their own culture. To Aboriginal Australians, their culture is something precious to be shared in a very measured and thought-out way and only with people who have demonstrated their respect and affinity with the culture and people. In New Zealand there seems (to Aussies) to be wide spread appropriation of Maori culture often for commercial gain particularly in the tourism industry.
I like how Australia and NZ have adopted some English language phrases such as "Beat around the bush" to a greater extent than other English speaking countries. I couldn't imagine someone for the USA saying beat around the bush! Or am I wrong?

Maybe because the Aussie dollar is worth more. I was in Boston though years ago and ran out of US dollars at a bar. The owner had a board with notes in all sorts of currencies including an A$1.00. I swapped a A$2.00 note for another round of 4 draft beers with him. 👍😂
Shout out to the linguist in the green shirt! That stuff about vowels is so much easier to convey with audio than if you're writing comments about fish and fish 😅. I look forward to visiting Australia and my relatives there sometime, and hopefully I'll make it to New Zealand too!
This was a fun idea! It's always cool to hear from locals in videos about other places! That was one of the many standout aspects of your Vagabrother's series.

I have to say this was a well orchestrated vid! Really entertaining, good on you Alex.

85% of forrests in NZ are also invase forgein species, much of their birdlife has been decimated too.
you know that live animal export is not our choice, it's the choice of the Muslim countries who want to kill animals their (barbaric) way.
Sounds similar to Canadians and Americans differences
@@Alunticstalkedme4072 and how vile that you refer to anyone as a native 🤬

Interesting just to see the difference in appearances of the average demographic you chose. I think the biggest difference is the culture. NZ has a dominant Maori cultural influence but is also a melting pot of multiple cultures and seems more culturally inclusive. Australia is basically a place Kiwis come to for work and lifestyle so that says a lot about both countries I think. I'm a Kiwi living in Australia. And yes, the Kiwis invented the pav. Great video Alex. I'm loving your travel vlogs lately too! Thanks so much.
Thanks Kaz! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

@@petefluffy7420 hahah see what I mean. This comment is an example.
@@Richo732 Got any examples?
Funny that so many of the people you interviewed said that the accents were the most notable distinction between Aussies and Kiwis, yet to my North American (Canadian) ears, they sound quite similar. But, then again, ive heard Aussies especially often say that they have a hard time telling the difference between Canadian and American accents.
I'm an Aussie and can tell the difference between north American accents easily.

@steadyRonify The Torte is a cake. A pavolva is meringue. Zero flour is used in making a pav.

On the Australia side, chef Herbert “Bert” Sachse is said to have created the pavlova at Perth's Esplanade Hotel in 1935, and it was named by the house manager, Harry Nairn, who remarked it was “as light as pavlova”.

Kiwis are more friendly, all the rest doesn't matter.
I visited New Zealand in the 70's and they never even had cafes let alone flat whites. I grew up with pavlovas when my kiwi friends had never heard of them and just fyi...
Born and raised Aucklander and I have to say that our cities just don't compare to Melbourne and Sydney. There is so much energy and life and so much to do in the CBDs there. Auckland city has just become apartments; all the things I used to love about it have closed down.
The Kiwis are our poor cousins
TBH Kiwis are nicer than most Aussies. Australia has a lot more variety and options for things to see and do. We unite for the Anzac commemorations and Bledisloe cup that’s about it. Melting pot for both are very different, we embrace diversity and inclusion more. BTW Manuka honey will always be FOREVER NZ.😂❤

Well our Aussie cousins have Australian Rules Football. A fantastic game. Shame we dont have it much in NZ.
Ive met some kiwis who were not friendly at all! But then again, ive also met some Australians who werent friendly at all.
And now have claimed our manuka honey name ??? Come on you Aussies, play fair 😁
