Long story short: I got this soon after making the homemade abomination for a solo in a jazz group, and I'm quite glad I chose this mute, despite the price.
Believe it or not, I've known brass bands (in championship section, no less) use the Wick cup's without the cup part as a straight mute - the sound works better for a lot of passages than the "standard" Wick straight mute. The problem with the H&B would be exactly the same as you had with your H&B straight - they come from the factory with honking HUGE corks and need cutting/sanding down before they play properly... once that's done, the sound is better than the Wick (although you lose the adjustability). IMHO the best cup out there is the Soulo - it sounds more like the H&B (which is a more distinctly cupped sound without the metallic edge present in the Wick) but has the adjustable cup part. Still, the Wick is one of the most commonly used and it can never hurt to own the most commonly used mutes - you just never know when you might need them :)
The Denis Wick line is great, but expensive. Humes and Berg is a good starting point. I myself have a Humes and Berg straight mute for my trombone. I can do a review on this mute if you'd like.

"If it fits, it ships..." not sure that really works with Denis Wick Cups used as straight mutes though; I'd invest in a real one ;-)
Samuel Plays Brass
Aye, just don't buy the wick one :p
I feel bad for the people wanting to get and do this... Then they remember they're a woodwind
That's why being a brass musician is so great ;-)

Absolutely! I love it!
