Great Video! The Mont Park line is certainly an interesting line, shame I was never around to see it in use. Interesting thing to note; just behind Platform 3 at Macleod is an intact old overhead wiring pole, which is one of the only surviving relics of the line (a long with a few overhead wiring pole bases). As far as I'm aware, Platform 3 was built as part of the duplication of the line from Macleod to Greensborough in the mid-late 1970s (the same project that involved the line being sunk into a trench in Watsonia). To my understanding part of the old Mont Park line just beyond Macleod was retained and used as a siding for storing trains before Macleod Yard was built, and I'm pretty sure it was removed when they built Platform 3. Also, a correction. Mont Park and La Trobe University did co-exist for a while. The University campus in Bundoora opened in 1967, on land which was formerly used by the Asylum as a farm. That land was given to the University, but the remainder of the land was kept by the Asylum. The Asylum continued to operate on the remaining land that wasn't taken over by the University until it closed in the early 1990s. The remaining land was redeveloped in the early 2000s as a housing estate called "Springthorpe". Something else to note was that there was another mental hospital next door to Mont Park called Larundel, which closed at the same time. In fact, Larundel's old building (or what remains of it) can actually be seen from Plenty Road, although it is being demolished at the moment.
Another thing to note, there is an express shuttle bus route (Route 301) that runs from Reservoir Station to the centre of La Trobe University, which runs about every 10 minutes, and is actually quite a popular service from my observation...
The 301 rockets along Dunne Street from sunrise to sunset 🌇 I see it on my walks 🚶♂️
It was a big complex; Larundel, Mont Park, Plenty, Bundoora. They were generous with the land and the lovely buildings for public good when they were built, like the Victorians were just before them.
It was Jeffrey Kennett who closed all the public psychiatric hospitals in Victoria and sold beautiful places to his mates. Mr Kennett is true philistine. Many publicly owned facilities and institutions were closed and flogged off by Jeff, hence the verb and adjective, jeffed.
Very interesting. Thanks for the research that went into this! ✌️
Quite an interesting video. My father was a nurse at Mont Park and my Auntie was a patient. Visited there many times in my younger days and didn't realize at the time that there had been a railway.
Your content is amazing mate
Actually I think you will find that the line did NOT go up the walking track but off to the right of it (as you walk to Springthorpe). The alignment is pretty clear with the odd railway artifact visible. If you walk up from Wungan St to the walking trrack the old alignment starts about halfway up and in itself an interesting walk.
love these videos, always well researched and a fascinating look at Victoria's history! thank you, keep up the great work!
they say you learn something new every day - and for me this was it! thanks for another great video Qazzy
Great video. Thank you!
Interesting video. I was not even aware of the Mont Park line. I wonder if they could ever rebuild it, though if they did, they may need to change the route in some areas. Their best solution could be to build the new line partly underground to avoid interfering with the current development.
Great stuff! Nice surprise to get a new Qazzy video!! Very interesting story and something I'd never heard of before. Certainly doesn't look like something that will ever be reactivated. Will add this to my list of things I need to get out and do some time on a lazy weekend!
Good news. We still have a train line going to an asylum.
It's called the city loop and the station is called Parliament.
I was about to make that joke, very good
👏👏👏
🤣🤣🤣very true
came here for this, wasn't disappointed! thank you!!
Also has an alcoholics anonymous branch there!
I guess that's a trip back in time we wouldn't want to take
2:04 THAT makes good sense. Correct housing for the relevant people ... No chance for a revival of that line as people are too comfortable with their cars. Some won't even use it if it was offered for free, not wanting to wait at the station. Plus, getting there from their home. No, some love their "rolling armchair" too much.
Thanks for your work. How about a trolly bus shuttle to operate a new service on this alignment. It would need less infrastructure.
Picture quality seems to have improved
Isn't that interesting.
I'm in the area since the 60s and family pre-dating that, and I've never heard about this line before.
I wonder if like the 96 tram that uses the ex train rails/ platforms at Albert/ MSAC etc, that the trams might be used is this line was too rebuilt. That way trains and their services would not be affected. Trams rock.
Great video but weird narration.
