    When Maestro Honeck is on the podium he is never whimsical. So I trust him to present a well considered view of the music. What has he uncovered in the Schubert 9 with his brisk tempi, broad dynamic expanse, and well defined phrasing? Never before had I recognized that the work is built on fanfare rhythms just waiting to be heard. Melodies were now vocal instead of lugubrious. The interplay of the woodwinds was now playful, not studied.The finale's repetitive string motive became a light ornament. The whole became a joyous expression by a composer who as a child had lived through and survived Napoleon's investiture of Wien. To my ears Maestro Honeck has produced a victory symphony!
    I shan't throw out the slower versions, but my goodness! Was this performance intentionally bracing and challenging. Honeck at his best - asking us to try something, asking us to think!

      Nailed it! Thank you, I was struggling to describe how this is different than most interpretations we get. Since you like this, may I recommend Harnoncourt leading the COE.

      @@MegaVicar Could only find Harnoncourt and the Wiener Philharmoniker. He finds nice motifs to bring out in the accompaniments. And the final chord diminuendo, Schubert's wish, is quite effective. Honeck and many others ignore it. Dvorak's New World also has a dying away final chord, but it is so famous that no one would dare to change it.

    Woah, it’s Schubert on a caffeine high (too much Einspanner at the Viennese coffee house). I’m really enjoying the energetic interpretation though. It’s like an entirely different composition. This is a marvelous UA-cam channel and I appreciate the amount of work that goes into producing so many great performances.

    This conductor respects the Allá Breve in the first movement, which generally extends much longer because it is counted in 4 instead of 2 as Schubert intended.

    That is truly a great interpretation. First I thought, probably little bit to fast, but far from it, he managed to emphasize parts of the score, that never really came to my attention:
    e.g. 22:07 the arpeggio in the violins first staccato then pizz. Beautiful!
    or 16:16 the line in the Celli with trill. So enlightening!

Kompliment an Herrn Honeck.

    I'm struck by the difference between an empty hall and a full one, but I can't find words to describe the difference. I guess one is that the sound is not absorbed in an empty hall. It's a more stark sound. Very clear and it seems even more precise.

    I have no problem with the tempo, but I think a faster tempo calls for closer and less reverberant miking, and a slower tempo works fine with the reverberant miking. The clarity gets a little lost with the fast decay of the notes.

    I really like most of Manfred Honeck's renditions...his recording of the Dvorak 8 with the same orchestra is one of my faves! But this is too fast! In the last movement, you cannot hear the violins properly with their crazy short notes. But as the slow movement is so 'con moto' and so less 'andante' that the last movement has to be that fast in order to prevent the symphony from being too bottom-heavy. Sorry, for me it is back to Wand and Abbado for the Schubert 9

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer 3 роки тому +2

      This is definately not too fast. These are HIP tempi, everything else is too slow.
      I just heard excerpts and the tempi are not the issue. What I take issue with is looking at the length of the video it tells me that he ignores ALL the repeats.
      If you observe them all, at that speed the symphony should take an hour.

    • @adityabhattacharyya8302
      @adityabhattacharyya8302 3 роки тому

      @@Quotenwagnerianer That is not true; a HIP performance does not mean it has to be taken at speeds where the grandeur of the piece is lost (IMO). I measured the time taken by Honeck in the exposition of the outer movements (2:40 and 3:33) and the parts of the scherzo that are repeated (3:50), which together add to a lil bit more than 10 mins. The whole performance lasted 45 minutes. So even if he had taken all repeats, the performance would have lasted around 55 minutes.
      I consider Mackerras' performance of the same piece with the Philharmonia as the benchmark of HIP performances of this symphony. Mackerras clocks at 59 minutes. Norrington, I think, goes a bit faster and finishes it in 58 something minutes. This performance is a good 3 something minutes faster than some of the renowned HIP recordings of this symphony. So this performance is too fast! Period!
      As for the lack of repeats in this performance, not taking repeats in the finale is common. He should have taken repeats in the first movement, at least. However, he was smart IMO not to take the repeats in the scherzo after such a fleeting second movement. The scherzo would have become the longest movement in the symphony, and the whole balance between the movements would have gone out of the window.

      If you cant hear the "crazy short notes" (you probably mean the eighth-triols and tremolos), then listen more carefully. I agree, that the take on that is quite fast, but it's so crisp that the effect is amazing and nothing of the composer's intention is dismissed. In fact the speed of the last movement enables to even better understand connections within the instruments and motivs, imho.
      Strange that you only focus on technicalities like the time-measures of the movements. C'mon try to listen and understand the music Schubert has given us.

    • @adityabhattacharyya8302
      @adityabhattacharyya8302 3 роки тому +1

      @@brahmsianer5899 As you have been so supportive of this interpretation, by this previous text as well as multiple others in the text, I actually tried listening to it several times over the last few weeks. I donno man, as of yet it hasn't grown to me...you are right that you hear sections here (especially in the accompanying musical lines) that you don't in other performances and the sound quality is pretty amazing. However, the overall trajectory of the second movement (especially) gets lost. Every musical moment becomes kinda equalized, if it makes any sense. For example, in the section just before that scary disonant climax there is a sudden key change which leads to the climax. In other performances, the sense of alarm and approaching doom seems more palpable which i feel arises from the leisurely tempo. Here the climax came and went. It sounded great, was perfectly executed but didn't do anything emotionally for me.
      I guess Schubert's ninth can be interpreted either as the first complete mature symphony by an young, ambitious musical genius or as the final grand symphonic testament of a person whose days are numbered. This performance seems more aligned to the former, which i have slowly come to understand ig (thanks to you). However, I still seem to prefer the latter approach. Just my subjective opinion. Cheers.

    Für die richtige Kleiber-Ästhetik muss der Dirigent sehr groß erscheinen und ganz lange Arme haben. Die Musiker dagegen sehr klein. Wie auf dem Bild Madonna mit dem langen Hals von Parmigianino.

    Not a favorite among many orchestra musicians. They sometimes refer to it as the Grate rather than Great. They say it’s way too long and repetitive. Have to admit, it’s not one of my favorites, either. This was a good rendition as it went by faster than usual.

    The tempo does not suit at all the grandeur of the music. He makes this majestic symphony sound trivial.

    Too fast!! What is the rush??Are we try8ing to "excite" the audience... to not 'bore' them?? The music has its own inherent tempo and rhythm

    Origins of music unevidenced. Except it is gift to humanity from God the Creator. Music continues in heaven. Discontinues in hell.
    Jesus Christ came from heaven to earth for one purpose only - to die on cross for remissions of pre-existing sins of every single person and to resurrect. Jesus Christ providing forgiveness from pre-existing sins for every single person, salvation from eternity in hell and free entry to eternity in heaven for all who repent of sins in Jesus Christ.
    Other side of death is eternity. Eternity in hell. Or eternity in heaven through Jesus Christ.
    Penalty of pre-existing sins already paid by Jesus Christ on The Cross. Accept HIM. Be saved from eternal in hell. Enter heaven. Enjoy heavenly music. For free.

    Must be a union job: everyone’s in such a rush to get it done with and get out of there.
    It’s a shame - would have been so much more enjoyable to stick around a bit and listen to the music.

    Das Notwendigste, das Härteste und die Hauptsache in der Musik ist das Tempo. W. A. Mozart
    Dieser Maestro lässt das arme Orchester viel zu schnell spielen. Schade um die schöne Symphonie...

      Mozart hätte es vermutlich gefallen. Diese Exaktheit war zu seiner Zeit wohl nicht möglich. Aber wer weiß das schon.
